Fascinated by the sounds of synthesizers and other electronic instrumentshe discovered a totally new and breath-taking musical universe. He started to search for such kind of music in a local record shop - CDs were not even invented at that time. Later, listening to the radio show “Schwingungen” became a weekly ritual and increased Axel’s interest in various styles of electronic music. While taking Keyboard lessons for almost 6 years the dream of making his own music was growing rapidly and in the age of 16 he bought his first own synthesizer - an ARP 2600, previously owned by Adalbert von Deyen. A few years later he met another guy from Leverkusen who was also working on his first own musical steps - Andreas Morsch. Because of their common passion for sequencer based electronic music they started to work together and founded the band Digital Dream. Within a few years 5 tapes were released before Andreas’ made a break for private reasons. Axel continued making his own music and met Uwe Denzer in 1994 when they became neighbours in the same house. 3 years later, in 1997, Andreas joined the two guys and together they founded Pyramid Peak. Their first release “Atmosphere” in 1998 was well received and with “Ocean Drive” Pyramid Peak became very popular as the best electronic music newcomer in 1999. In 2002 Axel decided to start his own solo project under the name AXESS and released his first album “First Light” which also found many fans too. “Chamaeleon”, his second CD, was released in 2003 and that was also the year in which Axel met Max “maxxess” Schiefele, an extremely talented composer and guitar player from Bavaria. Both started a new musical collaboration and released their first common CD “Contact” in 2004. This CD was a huge success within the electronic music scene and was performed live in Germany, The Netherlands and the UK. Over the years Axel released many more CDs solo, with Pyramid Peak as well as with Maxxess and in 2012 their album “5vor12” won the first price as the best electronic music album in 2011 at the Schallwelle music award.-     Особая благодарность: Klorus X, Jeanlab, visitor, jianniz, dma_b

Psycho ...... 13:05 ----------------------- foobar2000 1.6.11 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1  Sequencer albums have certainly made a dramatic resurgence over the last few years but with quality like this the style hardly seems to be running out of steam, rather it is going from strength to strength. 'Ocean Drive' follows a much more 'Berlin school' path but also takes them from being a good band to being one of the very best putting them up with Ramp and Rainbow Serpent.
A heartbeat gently pulses over weird, mysterious drones but you only have to wait a minute before a shuffling sequence drifts in and out of the bubbling mist. A melody, low in the mix, is both melancholy and hinting at imminent danger at the same time. This then continues through to almost the end before fading back to the heartbeat that introduced the piece. The twenty three minute title track comes next and this time it is less than a minute before the sequence emerges above the exquisite synth pads. Less than two minutes in and another laser sharp sequence steps into formation and settles into Schulze territory for the next ten minutes. We then get a break, taking us gently to those hidden depths within ourselves. Garbled voices can just be heard heralding the next pulsating staccato onslaught, heavier than before with a superb lead line accompanying it. Metallic, cosmic rumbles are as effective a way as any to commence 'Dive' but as in previous tracks the atmospheric introduction is not left on its own long before a sonic cascade joins it. The melody is the best so far fitting in with the sombre synth pads perfectly. More faint talked vocals can just be made out but this time they are female. 'Sunrise' breaks over the ocean and birds fly through the morning haze. The images created are so vivid you could almost be there. The peace is shattered after three minutes (a long introduction that one!) by an urgent sequence and a melody almost echoing the bird cries. This is a track full of the joy of being alive, the ideal accompaniment to a warm but energetic summers day. 'Twilight' finishes the album but this isn't all gentle sleepy stuff, oh no! The strident sequence reminds of Jarre but the lead is much more Tangerine Dream. Have they saved the best till last? Yup I think so. Five minutes in but things are still building and becoming more intense. The additional track 'Psycho' starts with fittingly dark, moody distorted drones. A brooding sequence starts up creating an unsettling atmosphere but then a higher register sequence is brought into play creating quite a contrast with the first. When the lead line comes in it is excellent emphasising the uneasy undercurrents. In the seventh minute the pace quickens dramatically as if the chase is on. The melodies get better and better right until the end. Things start in fine form with 'Gruga Park,' a typical slugfest of sequencers galore with wonderful synth lead lines. I also really like the percussion which, along with the sequencers, really moves things along extremely well. There is energy aplenty here. After a great first movement for the first nine minutes, a totally separate, and equally good sequence, finishes off the last third of the track. Beautiful, clean choirs herald this last passage, along with sweeping majestic electronics. Then a classic Berlin school bass pulse propels exquisite sequencers and some cool astronaut-like vocal samples. This is just brilliant, it gives me chills every time, very powerful electronic music. An absolute grabber of a track, I can't say enough about it.
'Secret' switches the mood to dark and cool, suitable for skulking about in a flashy spy movie. The sinister tone and style of sequencing actually reminds me of Synasthesia's 'Desideratum' CD, one of my all-time favourites. As Pyramid Peak's music is usually lighter and brighter, I was really pleasantly surprised at their ability to pull this track off. Excellent change of pace. 'Flow' is just as good as the first two, and – well, you get the idea, just go buy it already! The bright piano over the top of the pads and sequencing at the end of 'Flow' is especially good. 'Distance' turns more melancholy, with sad synth strings sounding very Schulze-like. Yet another great sequence emerges out of this one, and again the drumming is very good here, much better than most electronic drumming. The Schulzian signature touches includes the obligatory key change and male choirs toward the end. 'Dreams' is more like prior Pyramid Peak material, lighter in tone. This one doesn't do a lot for me at the beginning, but strong sequencing rescues it partway through, including a great finish in the last minute where a stellar sequence is allowed to solo until the end. Two more strong, classic Teutonic tracks finish things off. In short, a great CD. Berlin school fans will not be disappointed. (PD) Above was a review of the original release of 'Random Events'. This re-issue also has a bonus track however, in the form of a live version of the title track. It is even more exciting than the studio version. 'Ocean Drive' was good. 'Random Events' was excellent but (apart from the seriously naff title- I laughed for the whole of a millisecond) 'Fish'n Love' is fantastic.
From very cosmic beginnings there appears a lovely melodic but melancholy slow lead line. NASA samples from the Apollo 11 launch add to the atmosphere still further. At the three minute mark 'First Mission' really starts getting into its stride on the back of a brace of excellent sequences. They combine and mutate really well and the lead lines add to the excitement still further. From this tremendous pulsating opener we move into 'Elevation'. This is another number involving a sequence but its really the melodies which catch the attention most. Its all rather slow and moody. I was reminded a little of TD's early 80's sound-tracks such as 'Wavelength'. 'Pulse' starts with a montage of dark cosmic effects. Close your eyes and you can just imagine you are floating way above the Earth. The sounds of your spacecraft's machinery is all that is disturbing the tranquillity. Three minutes in we get a sequence starting up, it is rapidly followed by another and our attention is pulled back to the job at hand. A rhythm then joins in and it becomes quite an infectious foot tapping number. The melodies are probably the best Pyramid Peak have come up with to date and along with the very accessible sequences and rhythms this is a piece of music that almost everyone except maybe ambient fans will enjoy tremendously- sort of 70s Jarre meets Inteligentsia. Unbelievably 'Changes' keeps up the incredibly high standard of its predecessor. More fantastic sequences and rhythms make it even more syncopated, TD meets the very best of Ian Boddy from his 'Uncertainty Principle' period. Nearly everything on this album would be real audience pleases if played live. There's so much of the Oh Yes! factor to it and even a good selection of blistering solos. 'Impressions' is yet another stunner, this time amazingly Dysonish especially in the lead melodies department. In fact it could rank alongside anything on 'Evolution', 'Aquarelle' or even 'Moonwind' - yes its that good! It's the title track next. We get more excellent sequences but also dreamy electric guitar licks (Axel: played by the unforgettable Klaus Hoffmann Hoock!). On most albums this track would be something of a highlight but following the three previous tracks would be an almost impossible task for anyone and to some extent I was slightly disappointed but the closing couple of minutes where it really starts to rock were yet another highly impressive performance. 'Tiefschlaf Teil 1' returns us to the cosmos for the first couple of minutes then quietly at first a slow bubbling sequence starts to form. Another melodic sequence then takes the lead. Yet another sequence comes in and we continue on the slow but relentless build up. I kept expecting it to suddenly explode but instead the subtle approach continues right until the end. The bonus track 'Tiefschlaf Teil 2' is an excellent live offering fitting in with the rest of the album very well (Axel: recorded live at the Jodrell Bank planetraium 2002). A sedate and slightly mysterious sounding sequence is supplemented by distorted sampled speech. It's all very ominous and eerie. More sequences, rhythms and an angst-ridden lead line set the track alight and finish things on a real high. This album contained some of my favourite moments from 2001 and given the competition that is really saying something! Because all the music on this album was composed by myself, I would like to dedicate this CD to the love of my life and mother of our wonderful children. She was the center of my life and my inspiration. Without her, life will never be the same again.
