Original blurb follows: "I made Koss, 98 Loop and Rhodes Draft in 1998 right after I got my first PC for doing tunes on. I was heavily into DJ Shadow so I wanted to try putting tracks together from samples of old vinyl, which I already had a decent sized collection of thanks to my Dad. I also spent ages going through all the record shops in Belfast looking for old jazz and soundtracks and stuff like that to sample when I first started university. I still like the tracks, probably cos I still like the source material. There's a version of Koss with a nice Hendrixy guitar solo but the rest of the track is a mess so you get the more chilled version here. These are tracks that date from the period 2002-2005; up to the time Barry wrote his classic first album "Oneiric". An early interest in uk garage is apparent in the 2-steppy breaks of "London" for instance, and minimal techno in "LTI". Balancing Lakes, though, feels like and album and not simply a collection of tracks. From the gorgeous blissful amen jungle of "Loving Dub" to the jazzy horns and otherworldly melodies of "New Orleans" this shows a man at the top of his game even before his debut release. released February 18, 2008

Originally started as a platform for vocal collaborations between Barry Lynn and Brian Greene (formerly of Kinnego Flux), here we have a short EP of sweet, skype-mediated balladry. In the 6 years since KGO001 was released, Barry and Brian have collaborated together on several Boxcutter albums, especially on The Dissolve, released on Planet Mu in 2011. Brian has recently relocated to Berlin and is currently working on his own music (he's a talented multi-instrumentalist as well as singer). Lead track "As If U" flips some D50 flutes, bass guitar and a jazz fusion sample into a deep, hollow-sounding track that Brian complements with lyrics exploring themes of benevolence and exploitation. Remote Relations has already cropped up in some Boxcutter mixes, including the FabricLive mix from 2012. Here we present the definitive version, a pulsing bass guitar driven track with a wistful vocal delivery musing on long distance relationships. Finally, "What It Means" is a wintry, spectral boogie track with a sweet drop full of instrumental overtones and crackling drums. By summer 2001, I had just finished my degree and was heavily into IDM. I had upgraded the processor and RAM in a PC I'd bought in 1998 to get started producing on, and could finally play back more than two tracks at a time in a sequencer. I'd got hold of a beta version of Audiomulch, and Cubase VST 3 had been upgraded to 3.5, the first to have VSTi support, so I finally had a synth to play with! Even if it only looked like rows of grey sliders with mysterious names like "VCF Env". Previous tracks had been done with audio recorded through a Soundblaster card, using the cheap Farfisa organ I'd blagged locally, a Watkins Copicat, and my guitar. I remember being impressed at how clean this new MIDI-made electronic stuff sounded compared to the recorded sounds, the weird glassy surface it seemed to have, with lots of high frequencies. The opening track "Particle Spin" was made during this first summer, and is typical of the kind of thing I was into, beats made out of processed chunks of audio, and metallic-sounding effects, all rising into a trippy peak made of extreme highs and lows. "May Garage" jumps ahead to May 2002, by which point I'd got Reason 2.5. Wavetable sounds from the Maelstrom synth are all over this track, capped off with a short guitar solo. Back to 2001, "Methyl Orange" was my first Amen break tune, and I still get a buzz from hearing it kick in after the granulated rising Farfisa tone. The opening kick drum was my attempt at re-creating that weird squelch in "Afternoon Girl" by Ovuca, which I loved enormously. "Summer '01" was made quickly, I'm playing bass guitar on this one, a cheap Westfield I bought in the last year of my degree. I wrote "Evening Tune" while I was supposed to be studying for my finals in May 2001. I had to use Rebirth to get the synth sounds, programming long slide tones across 303s to get sustained notes. Features my wee cousin Sunnibha on vocals. Lots of guitar and Farfisa, and what sounds like the Bojo FFT Waveshaper on the breakbeat, which I nicked off the DJ Shadow Brainfreeze mix (the vinyl bootleg everyone had). You can see those first five tracks as Side One, now on to Side Two, made 2 -3 years later on, when I was near the end of more university work. "Cloud Weight" is the track that made me think of compiling this album, very Irish stuff watching heavy clouds gathering, with a tempo drop to house tempo and back up again. Some nice spectral filtering on the drums in the intro. "Fbrmx" started as an entry for some remix competition but got worked into a standalone track. My "singing" gets followed up by a heavy amen and subtractor bass drop, using the full amen break in this one, including the intro flam. The 190bpm kept the local DJs away though, which I thought was pretty funny at the time, having zero experience behind the decks at this point. I made "Abstract Electro '04" in one evening in January 2004 and bounced it out, then abandoned it for not sounding heavy enough. I think it sits nicely in between the other full length melodic tracks, and has some funny DSP tricks throughout. The original mix of "Diagonal Reader" is from December 2003, very Drukqs-inspired stuff (like a lot of my tracks from this period, when I was finally getting the technical chops together enough to copy what I liked). I re-worked it again a few months later, but next up is "Theme From August '04", a track from summer 2001's MIDI experiments that I was never satisfied with, and re-worked in 2003 (the outro halftime stuff is from this point), and then again in 2004. Very obviously Squarepusher-inspired, say no more. The last track is a bonus, the slickest version of Diagonal Reader I got up to before 138bpm started to rule the roost. Hope you enjoy! Moving away from over- arching concepts, the tracks are mostly titled after the constituent stars in the constellation of Taurus, Barry's star sign, and a common sight in the northern winter sky. Shades of Fripp's experiments with Eno can be detected in the Gibson fuzz tone and drifting loops, as well as more Gottsching-styled exercises in tight repetition. Continuing his hugely successful trademark dubstep/electronica sound from the 2006 album 'Oneiric', the ante has definitely been upped and 'Glyphic' certainly delivers. From the opening title track, Boxcutter's totally unique sound excels. Floating pads and astral jazz samples sit above deep dub basses, with all manner of instruments thrown into the mix, resulting in a beautiful noise throughout. He pursues dubstep with 'Bug Octet' and the dub inflected 'J Dub', and break orientated electronica with 'Kaleid' and 'Fieldtrip'. With the outstanding 'Foxy' he blends deep bass, soulful organ and vocals with soaring pads and an infectious 2-Step Garage skippy break. Boxcutter is an artist who pushes the dubstep sound to a new level whilst keeping the dub roots of the music firmly intact, injecting a truly unique flavour to everything he produces. Since his debut single 'Brood' was released on Hotflush in 2005, he has been making waves in the dub scene. His continued support from the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs (Radio 1) ensure a loyal following everywhere he plays. The Arecibo message was beamed via frequency modulated radio waves into space at a ceremony to mark the remodeling of the Arecibo radio telescope on 16 November 1974. The album is thus a space voyage, a musical journey through the galaxy. 'Arecibo Message' is a collection of shorter, more condensed tracks for Boxcutter. 'A Familiar Sound' (also released on extended 12"mix through the new Kinnego records) features electronic soul duo Kinnego Flux with Brian Greene on vocals. This album sees Boxcutter ditching the computer sequencing and using lots of analogue synths, delays and guitar pedals to give an organic texture to the record. 'Arecibo..' features more guitars and bass than previous records and influences such as Hendrix as well as 2 step Garage influences such as Wideboys are clear. Brian Greene - Ufonik (3:35) Barry Lynn has already dropped a couple of albums that looked at dubstep from fresh angles before everyone else started to do the same. This time around, on "The Dissolve", things are different, and he’s taken off in a direction that leaves dubstep behind entirely. The title is a reference to a common video art effect, where one image gradually transitions to another. The album has an unpolished hue to it, created with keyboards, drum machine, echo and tape and sometimes even electric guitar. It sits in a world of its own, but with a stronger affinity to things like Theo Parrish's productions or hypnagogic pop than the latest fashionable electronics created on the newest software - the devil is in the details with this album, it’s rich in twists and turns. "The Dissolve" opens with the spacey funk and marimba of 'Panama', into the floaty synth and bass of 'Zabriskie Disco'. Things start to take on more gravity with 'All Too Heavy', one of three tracks featuring singer Brian Greene, that mixes a hazy, dubbed out funk abstraction with Greene’s effect laden vocals. 'Cold War' featuring Ken and Ryu gets heavier still, with a slow dancehall kick drum and grimy metallic claps, over which mourns a sad 8-bit melody and slip-slide strings. 'Passerby' uses an echoed 808 and a guitar melody to make something that sits at the border between Eighties funk and Steve Hillage hippy grooves, while the next track, 'TV Troubles' takes that idea even further, wrapping echoey riffs into a lo-fi funk vamp which rewinds, slows down and distorts on a tape reel, it’s incredible. Title track 'The Dissolve' is even more lo-fi; jump cut edits and a sound that’s frayed around the edges, everything bathed in tape wobble and hiss which finally slows down to a stop. 'Moon Pupils' restarts the album again from an airy 2-step perspective with melodic, hollow bass sounds, echoes and reverse edits, whilst 'Factory Setting' mixes off-key metallic synths with a bassline and funky galloping drums, which gives the album a rare moment of darkness. 'Allele' brings things into the open again, building from echoey drums into a tight Juke influenced drum pattern, before adding a vocal that hints at old school hardcore, all wavering chords and drops, before the whole thing finally resolves into a restrained but ravey breakbeat. 'Topsoil' mixes a gliding synth melody with hazy synth stabs and dusty drums, before 'Little Smoke Remix', collaboration with Kab Driver, wraps hard offbeat drums in cascading synth arpeggios. The album ends in the broken funk of 'Ufonik', and by then you definitely get the feeling, as an album, you’ve been transported and dropped off somewhere else entirely. released April 25, 2011

"Audience Science" is a 23 minute set of metric arpeggios and multi-track phase cancellation experiments, mixed down in Northern Ireland during summer 2015. Evoking an escapist place outside of (browser) history, some of the track titles are borrowed from internet data trackers. "Open Air Tape Trance" sets the scene with a pastoral haze of square wave melody and guitar, then rises into a saturated peak of doppler chords, before the fluctuating tape playbacks phase each other out. "New Relic" has a minimalist urgency, passing through several sweeps of synth decoration, before a bass guitar figure forces the various elements into coherence. "DownStream" is the longest and possibly the simplest of the pieces here, an extended two chord pulse arpeggio layered with Irish streams and tape artefacts. "Brightcove" introduces some fretless bass harmony to accompany brittle Roland arps, ending on a rarely heard SH-101 noise-to-LFO trick. Finally, "Begin Again" returns the listener to the pastoral world introduced by the opening track, a hazy drift of slow-motion rising chord tones. (The Host is an alias of Barry Lynn aka Boxcutter). Next up, “Fives and Sixes" grooves to resonant guitar parts whistling in the high end, before "Air Loom"'s gritty expanded harmonies and ascending drum part reaches a gentle conclusion.
