A heavy hitting long-player comes to Conditional in the form of Kindohm's magnum opus, 'RISC Chip'. Minneapolis-based Mike Hodnick, aka Kindohm, is widely known for his live-coded dancefloor interruptions, wringing splattered rhythms and textures from a text editor using the open source software TidalCycles. Adding analogue synths to his palette, 'RISC Chip' morphs and refines Kindohm's previous work into a bewilderingly singular work encompassing glitch, breakcore, IDM and techno. At once bruisingly complex and alluringly minimal, tracks like '32-bit Falcon' and 'Bit Dust' crunch and flex with pin-point percussion, opaque bass and paradoxical rhythm that only a mad-scientist approach to musicianship could afford. Elsewhere, 'Mint' and 'Practical Closures' let the sound open up a little more, giving some breathing room but keeping a stony gaze on the dancefloor. It's a music movement that tries to lift restrictions of the artist-software relationship and grant the former a greater impact on music creation. Thanks to the programming tools, the artist codes music in real time. The most important thing is not what he is doing at a given time (performative aspect), but how he is able to establish a relationship with the listener through the sounds that he (not the software) creates. One of the representatives of Algorave is a sound artist and programmer, Mike Hodnick, known as Kindohm, who opens this series of grooves. Having been operating for almost a decade, with his numerous releases, he has been trying to create a bridge between complicated rhythms and greater accessibility of coded music. A broken fragment of a melodic phrase subsequently joined by other elements of the structure opens the A side of the Kindohm’s cassette. The track is gaining pace with every minute and is more and more clearly heading towards the sound of Chicago footwork. The eruption of distorted bass brings to mind the classic productions of the legend of this genre, DJ Clent. The B side features a song set at 160 bpm, in the minimal techno style, but this time its sound refers to the sound palette of early SND productions. The graphic design of the Algorave series by Iwona Jarosz evokes the works of the 20th-century Wrocław visual artist Wacław Szpakowski.
