Devoured by the flames in a wicked blaze of a bizarre aurora borealis. In the subsequent investigation a conspiracy emerged, consisting of soldiers, officers and a journalist colleague, but shockingly also the local chief of police. Varg2™ bestows upon us an homage to Norrland, an album embracing collaborations with local abilities, driving spirits and heroes of the north. Demirel and Anthony Linell have developed a stunning and unsettling work that studies the Icelandic landscape as a motor of mythology. Titled Winter Ashes, our senses search for logical order and signifiers with which to measure our relation to both the visual and aural elements, and by detailing the inhuman scale and structure of the region in this way, a hypnotic ambivalence regarding our place unerringly haunts the work. This edition is a snapshot of Linell's musical contribution at a moment of reflection in the project's enduring evolution. Far from being an acoustic summation of the collaboration, Linell has derived these pieces from his work with Demirel, retaining the name of the activity through which the album has arisen. The nucleus of Winter Ashes is the relationship between landscape and mythology, a snare that binds us in contradiction. In its most common usage landscape refers to the visual indicators of any given terrain over and above any innate material properties. In its verb form it typically describes the agreeable construction and reconfiguration of terrain by the human hand. Our aesthetic preferences are from the outset privileged in the concept of landscape; our eyes are obeyed first. This is in distinction to mythology in which allegory upon analogy tells of but does not show the gods. Making sense of this nexus is to train our visual faculties towards seeing what is concealed, if not to merely search for an interaction with what is completely and surely unobservable. Iceland's unearthly appearance is something else. It is conspicuously suited to the complexities of a task such as that which Winter Ashes imaginatively demands of it. It readily inclines toward the quality of the sublime. Situating this demand historically, Winter Ashes is inspired by the long and fragmented history of recording and retrieving Norse mythology, just as it is the mythology itself. The Codex Regius, a compendium of Old Norse poems that has been dated to the 13th century, and the Edda, a collective term for two volumes of medieval Icelandic literary works to which the Codex Regius is connected, both serve as points of reference. All were lost for periods of time throughout the centuries, and sections of each remain lost forever. As promptly as these documents tell the stories of Norse mythology, they register how easily they recede from written form back into the landscape. Though persistently morphing, it seems truer to look to the latter over the former as the eternal, volatile setting for these stories. Winter Ashes makes this ambiguous task its point of departure. A life he from early age documented in music and texts with curiosity and humour, imagination and bravery, a life in the range between the present and the past, departure and return, loneliness and a sense of belonging, dissonance and harmony. In the 2000’s Victor was a part of the bands Alexi Jungle, Figaro and Pale Corners, while he in the 2010’s mainly worked with his solo music project Koenigsfrost and as a DJ at several clubs and the festival Way Out West. Yttrandet – signifying both “judgment” and “testimony” – was his last music project. In his music we can still hear his expressions, his soft irony and his accurate vision. The time we shared is not just a question of years and days, it is a continuous movement. We who live on remain with our memories and your legacy through your music. In the texts he wrote, Victor often shows a touch of dreamlike surrealism as in this dream: The sun is about to set. I am alone in the woods. The body aches and the worry escalates from grinding noise to a tide. I fall asleep and when I wake up everything is bright, and the worry has disappeared. Now I see the wall a couple of hundred metres in front of me. Black and shining as polished granite, cut in one piece, it reaches from the west to the east without interruption or opening. A wall. Two creatures, a giant and a dwarf, are standing in the shadow of the wall and they are doing something. I explain that I am in a hurry, that I must go forward. The dwarf says ”Forward?! There is no longer any forward. Forward ends here!” Now I can see that the giant is building an enormous ladder. My curiosity takes hold of me. ”Why is he building a ladder?” The dwarf looks at me, first suspiciously, but soon he exclaims ”My name is Gabriel!” ”But what is this ladder?” ”Ah, that one. The last one collapsed, it was too old, so Jacob here builds a new one.” I ask if they also need to get over the wall. ”Over the wall? No, no, we are going back up.” The dwarf points up at the sky and continues: ”You will not get over the wall. What Virgil is to Dante, the piano is to the listener. A fragmented leitmotif and a cicerone into the nimbus that is “Othem”. Dual in nature, the album comprises seamless transitions between divergent idioms, figuratively as well as literally. A false dichotomy conveying the opposing pairs tender and bold, distinct but evading and with a direction every so often forward as inward. Each track is a crevice offering kaleidoscopic gleams into the poetic narrative extracted from the materiality of a slightly autotuned yet softly metallic voice. Not so different from standing in a bosket attending from a distance an invisible concert, performed by a remote ensemble. Far away, a flare is suggested inviting one down and below to a realm of distant and thunderous base. The eponymous “Othem” implies an archaic, fantasy-like vision of feudal nature. Perhaps, one can see it as a hymn to the tinctures of abstraction surrounding Vallmo. Phenomena that she collects, arranges, shapes and reveres as everyday essences; a ballad of the beauty of the mind and the deconstruction of pop. On verso, she increases her voicing with different means. Drums materialise from afar foreshadowing the patchily fizzling magnetic elements of harmony in alluring compositions. Seemingly, one does not get any closer than this to Vallmo’s singular, subjective and paramount sonority. Through the expressive lines and shading of tone and timbre, Vallmo captures inner endeavours complete with triumphs and vulnerabilities. To the inner eye a scent of limestone and the sensation of sun protrudes amidst pure, brilliant intonation. The chiming resonance in the picture gallery of a lyrical ambiance lay bare the tension fields in the spatiality that is Vallmo’s pantheon of sound.
