October 2020 REM GENRE "ECM Jazz" foobar2000 2.0 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 ![]() ![]() ![]() After revisiting Iraqi Makāmāt by Yusuf Omar I was in the mood for more music drawing on Arabic modal system. Not necessarily traditional. So, I went on an extended trip through Skandrani's istikhbars, fab 'Persian Santur' collection in Explorer Series and a great number of Fairuz albums. Before long I realized I didn't line up anything for ECM posts. But then I remembered there is Anouar Brahem. Bingo!
Brahem is a Tunisian oud player. Apparently, he was signed to ECM after sending a demo tape. An unusual way to land a contract with a jazz label. Of course, by then Brahem already had commissions from choreographer Maurice Béjart and session work with Lebanese film composer Gabriel Yared. This is all to say that even if his debut "Barzakh" appears to come out of the blue fully formed, incredibly elegant and spectacularly played it was preceded by a lot of projects in the 1980s - most of it still unpublished. On a side note, it would be very interesting to hear Brahem's early film and theatre music. Some smart archival label would do good piecing it together. In its superiorly recorded meditative blend of Arabic traditional and contemporary chamber tropes "Barzakh" became an instant critical success. I started out talking about maqām, but "Barzakh" is not explicitly based in the form. For a more concentrated hommage see Brahem's "Blue Maqams" (2017) (happily also on vinyl). But in its modal melodic make up and instrumental texture (Brahem's oud, Lassad Hosni's percussion and Bechir Selmi's violin) "Barzakh" is reminiscent of traditional al tchālghi ensemble sans dulcimer and vocal. And then there is also contemplative nature of this music, which is also à propos - in Sufism 'barzakh' means a place where soul can travel in sleep and meditation. Later Brahem's oud was taken into more jazz-focused settings via ECM all-stars pairing with John Surman, Dave Holland and Garbarek, but this remains Brahem's most striking statement. Composed By – Anouar Brahem (tracks: 1 to 6, 8, 10 to 13), Bechir Selmi (tracks: 2), Lassad Hosni (tracks: 7, 9)
