He has been active since 1993 and has published more than 60 albums.It approaches various styles: ambient, space and especially Berlin School - style created by electronic music classics Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze. Considered to be a follower of Klaus Schulze, electronic music critics appreciate that he explored the concept of the Berlin School, adding new valences, perspectives and above all depth.- The influence which minimalism has had in electronic music from the early 70s (such as, for instance, Mother Mallard’s Portable Masterpiece Company, the first group to use synthesisers in their music) continue to be alive even today, especially in the Berlin School style of “sequential” electronic music (sequenced modern EM). Ostinato musical phrases, which are characteristic to minimalism – just how they appear for example in great works such as The Well-Tuned Piano (Monte Young) or the work Piano Phase (Steve Reich) and particularly in Music with Changing Parts (Philip Glass) or Rainbow in Curved Air (Terry Riley) – can induce in the listener a state of trance, causing modified state of consciousness. In this direction is not surprising that many modern composers of electronic music have been influenced by Asian musical traditions, such as the Balinese.
In the rhythmic psychedelic hallucinogens and even hypnotic “journeys”, which are characteristic to electronic music in the Berlin School style, it is possible to experience the same state of “trance” which we referred to earlier, due to the repetition of some precise musical structures, which are electronically “ordered”. For this reason, it is not surprising that some musicians who have deep spiritual preoccupations discovered the most suitable language to explore these mysteries in the “Berlin School”. For instance, artists such as Kitaro… or the one who we will talk about now, the Romanian Dan Bozaru, who creates music under the stage name INDRA. Born in 1961, in the city of Dragasani in the county of Valcea (Romania), the young Bozaru began in 1976 to study percussion at the School of Art in Iasi (one of the larger cities in the country, where his family moved to), guided by an innate fascination for rhythm and its form of expression. “In my opinion, rhythm is the most important thing, both in music and in everyone’s life, because it represents the pulsation and vibration of energy (…) The melody itself is born from an organic response to the rhythm’s evolving structure which makes it magical and mysterious (…) through music and rhythm we can influence in a beneficial way our perception, our psychic states, our moods and of course our health”. Bozaru thus takes part of the large group of composers of electronic music, with a background as a percussionist. From percussion he moved to the guitar after a year of study, while collaborating later as a solo guitarist with some groups of progressive rock and folk, such as Rocking or Echo. His style was influenced by the famous David Gilmour, solo guitarist with the legendary progressive rock group Pink Floyd: “The progressive approach to music was simply born from the desire of expressing something more sophisticated and elaborate than the standards of the 70s”. This step allowed the Romanian musician to experiment with different sound effects, which could be obtained with the electric guitar using effect pedals: “My solos on the guitar were somewhat ‘slow-hand’, long sustained, with deep vibration and echo, dominant and rather melodic. I often tried different strange effects using the effect pedals and glissandos.” In the mid ’80s, Bozaru started to study oriental philosophy and yoga, which influenced in a natural state the spirit and significance of his artistic work: “When I came into contact and profound syntony with the wonderful oriental tradition, an infinitely more elevated spiritual stage began in my life.” Spirituality thus became the most important source of inspiration for him, as well as a guide in musical creation. Even the stage name he chose (INDRA) in electronic music refers to one of the great gods of the Hindu pantheon, who had a very important role in vedic spirituality from ancient times. He was known as the god of storms, the one who was the master of meteorological phenomena, such as rain, thunder and lightning. The connection of the great god INDRA with the storm made him also to be correlated with war (INDRA being known as a great hero). Considering the importance that Bozaru gives to rhythm in his music, this mythological “partnership” is certainly a perfect fit. Most surprising is the fact that, according to the musician’s own statements, his relationship with the vedic divinity deepened following some unique spiritual experiences, which marked completely his future musical activity, both in terms of creativity and performing. Bozaru reports that during a long period of “isolation” which involved some difficult and complicated yoga techniques, the god INDRA himself appeared in a clear vision, telling him he will inspire him to help people through music, so they would have access to a more elevated dimension of life, and full of peace and harmony. Since then, Bozaru combined his work as a musician and author of some esoteric books with the spiritual universe of oriental practice and philosophy. In the beginning of the 90s the artist began to develop a special passion for electronic music and sound technology, teaching himself (the same way he proceeded also with the learning guitar) to play instruments with keys: “Essentially, I was interested in getting the most out of the instrumental capabilities of modern synthesisers. I wasn’t a virtuoso, but the tones represented an almost infinite source for my inspiration and I was so happy to discover that this way I can express effectively my ideas in music (…) Today I’ve realised there are no limits of expression when one uses the latest technology in electronic music. All that one needs is elevated inspiration and a lot of patience… I am also convinced that electronic music helped me understand the depths of human nature.” In 1993 Bozaru set up his first recording studio, producing his first solo album of electronic music, entitled Turning Away. Then, immediately, followed another three albums: Kingdom of Light, Parallel Time and Space. A year later he signed a contract with the company Inter-Lotus, creating a series of albums that brought him recognition in the specialist mass-media: Plenitude, Magic Collection, Seven, Cosmic Sound, Colosseum and Self Game. In 1995 he recorded three more albums for the label Digital Records and made his first live concert in Constanta. This was only the beginning of long and fruitful career as a musician. In a strictly musical sense, INDRA’s work was influenced to a certain extent by the style of Jean-Michelle Jarre and Vangelis (who INDRA in particular admires, stating that he professed a great “creativity and extraordinary artistic sensitivity”), but the most profound influence was the musicians in the Berlin School style electronic music in particular, Klaus Schulze, who “showed” him how to explore this fascinating world of sound, “surrendering” some of his basic principles. Bozaru has always been very clear stating that, of all forms and styles of electronic music, the Berlin School style is the one with which he identifies the most, being the nearest to the expression of his musical and spiritual interests: “The Berlin School style might be conceived as “the richest section” of EM. As a matter of fact, I consider it the most elevated style due to its power of expression, which is actually able to “shift” the human mental and psychic perception to its highest (…) I think it also succeeded in expressing in a most accurate way the highest states of subtle perception and emotion.” Although the “roots” of his musical creation are infused by the Berlin School style, INDRA’s music succeeds in transcending it, embracing also other trends more or less related to this style, such as ambient or new-age, offering a more musical and spiritual component to his work. Even if he appreciates a lot this style of electronic music, Bozaru is also aware of its “limitations”, supporting the development of a superior and “improved” version of what represents the legacy of the Berlin School: “Old Berlin School style “sins” because of some “sterility” at the emotional level. The mental state of trance, reachable when listening to a few typical Berlin School style music tracks, is not necessarily obtainable through long, monotone, sometimes tiresome and often not very suggestive repeated sequences (…) Ostinato is good, but it has to be used in an optimum way. I think I succeeded in bringing this dimension of ‘making things happen’ to the Berlin School style, adding also a hint of melodic line, which has the role to connect the listener to their heart.” An representative example of the new “version” of the Berlin School style proposed by INDRA can be found in the “adrenalinised” song ‘Pole Shift’ on the album The Call of Shiva (vol. 1) – 2005, which is without doubt one of the best of his works. Rhythmic Sequences (sequential patterns) filled with emotion, which are surrounded from time to time by sonorous oriental “aromas” that invite us to close our eyes and to transpose ourselves in an agreeable state imposed by the melody, giving the music a particularly dynamic breath, propelling us deeper into the state of trance. It carries the imprint of the energy of the beginning and the desire to artistically express the overflowing fullness that my soul brought forth in the ‘90s. It is impregnated with the emotions and nuances that I had felt at the time, of which many united in themes from later albums. Despite the modest technology used to record it, TURNING AWAY is very capable to slide the attentive listener into a universe full of mystery and cosmic nostalgia. To record this album I used a FOSTEX X-15 multi-track recorder which also incorporated a poor mixer. The final cut was made on AKAI GX-4000D reel to reel tape recorder. The recordings were in fact slightly evolved “experiments”, I still consider that, but ultimately came to realise that it was nevertheless present as a coherent ensemble even if the second track ('Archetype') is a curious combination of nostalgic sax, piano and cello. What initially was supposed to be the saxophone and pads alone, after tries and tries it had gone through piano and cello and ended up with both! 'Transcendental Path' is the realisation of an old idea that was in my mind for a long time but could not find a way out until I had the means it required to and as soon as I met the choirs specific to Korg, I knew that my dream would be fulfilled. The album is one of soul even if, technically speaking, it is not to a high standard... - INDRA Exact Audio Copy V1.0 beta 1 from 15. I say finally because I consider that INDRA is a sublime EM composer and musician that I catalogue in the same vein as Klaus Schulze, although their musical universes are full of paradoxes and don’t follow the same path. This said, the major point of comparison between INDRA and Schulze is the great passion they have for long minimalism ceremonials one can hear on subtle rhythmic modulations. And TURNING AWAY is the anchor point of this comparison and also the very first musical adventure of the Romanian synthesist. It’s a nice album with long minimalist movements rather introspective and mysterious where the ambient goes alongside with progressive and bewitching rhythm that had revealed us a quality synth player on ECHO IN TIME.
Even if it’s INDRA’s very first album, we are not into unknown territories with TURNING AWAY. If certain passages, as in 'Archetype' and 'Transcedental Path', show an INDRA which is not necessary in full control of its creativity, the title track is a real small jewel of the electronic minimalist art and innovative contemporary Berlin School for the time. And 'The Sacred Hall' is the icing on the cake, revealing once again the immense musical borders that INDRA crosses. Him who is so much capable to transcend his most intimate feelings, both on progressives and touching themes. Nymbus ...... 11:59 KINGDOM OF LIGHT is by far the biggest seller - even though it was ‘just’ the second album of my EM career. At the time I was signing my music with my real name, it was only later that I chose the stage name INDRA. Most likely, the extraordinary success I had with this album was due to the simple compositions, their themes and melodics easily awakening the hearts of the listeners. No wonder it was a favourite album for a long time... I intended the album to be homage to Romanian spirituality since the beginning and I even resorted to some of the oldest and best known folklore found in Romanian tradition (the fourth track: 'Ciuleandra'). I usually do not rework existent themes or ideas, but this had to be special. Fans appreciated 'Waving' the most, followed up by 'Rustic Pictures'. With the thought of creating a mental connection between Romanian and Hindu spirituality and on the edge of the controversial theory of the Indo-European migration, I called the last track 'Malini', a specific term from the ancient Indian shivaic tradition referring to the cosmic mystery of phonemes or subtle sounds. I smiled while revising this material, and remembered how frantic I was in that period of my life, my compositions marked by the multitude of themes, musicality and inventiveness. November 2010 REM GENRE Electronic foobar2000 1.5.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Written in 1993, KINGDOM OF LIGHT is the 2nd work of INDRA’s catalogue to be dusted and re-edited. It’s also INDRA’s most popular album before his music crosses the Romanian borders. We are discovering a 2nd album to rhythms surrounded by very nice orchestral arrangements. Oniric rhythmic structures where tempos are mainly moved by an impetuous synth, exception made of 'Rustic Pictures' and 'Malini', a little as Schulze made it on albums such as TOTEM and PICTURE MUSIC but with more musicality and suave orchestral arrangements.
KINGDOM OF LIGHT is doubtless the most orchestral album of INDRA. Rarely did I hear so much Mellotron and philarmonic tones on INDRA than on KINGDOM OF LIGHT. But it doesn’t smear at all the Romanian synthesist’s propensity to compose soft and enchanting EM whose minimalism is used as premises to beautiful and subtle permutations in rhythms which are sometimes skilfully built on synth impetus. The Twins ...... 17:29 This album is brought about by a different perspective I have on my musical creation, more abstract and difficult to understand. The two tracks are evolutionary, and always changing. Compared to the first two albums of EM career ('Turning Away'and 'Kingdom of light'), 'Parallel Time' is a bold approach but quite hard to digest. I wanted such an experience, it creates a universe in a class of its own filled with sounds and emotions. The careful listener can discover a world of new resonances and inward possibilities. Second track (Sphinx) was actually meant to be the first in this album, composed and recorded in one evening after having been out in town to see a play about life in the early days of humanity. I was impressed and the idea for a new album came by itself, easily developing into two 30 minute long tracks. - INDRA Exact Audio Copy V1.0 beta 1 from 15. If Prophet can wonder your ears with its approach as eclectic as experimental, Sphinx and The Twins are two inescapable in the musical world of Indra and even the world of EM.

Alcyone ...... 16:14 I’ve always liked to compose music, be it space or ambient, but did not want it put in the same frame with that of composers who are only dedicated to this genre. In my vision, there had to be a certain dynamism applied to my music and by saying that I’m not referring to rhythm or tempo, but to a sustained evolutionary structure in which the mind and psyche of the listener would find the roots of higher, sublime ideas. 'Cosmic Sound' is the beginning of such an idea. Two long tracks would give me enough time to develop a wide spectrum of sounds and motifs, I thought. First track, Nova New, has a crescendo and an almost dramatic final, space odyssey like. Second track, Veda, also represents a voyage among the stars, galaxies and eternal nostalgia. String ensembles and flute are imposing, following the same theme that is repeated in several styles and interesting variations. Technical misfortunes did not wait long to appear, mainly because of the multi-track recorder. In part, the errors were removed during the re-mastering process albeit the tapes were of a poor quality, having been stored for 16-17 years. 'Cosmic Sound' was recorded in the fall of 1994 and it took me about two weeks in whole. Having it all done, I must say that I was pleased with my first attempt to compose space music. It gave me wings and I was ready to look deeper into this genre, which is what I did in the following years… - INDRA I’ve always liked to compose music, be it space or ambient, but did not want it put in the same frame with that of composers who are only dedicated to this genre. On The Beach ...... 15:25 'Plenitude' was composed in a very relaxed state of spirit in which the dominant daydream is about certain remote and mysterious realms. First track I recorded gave the album title, as the theme was fresh in my mind. I wanted the listener to stay impregnated by its ancestral message, so I decided to put it at the bottom of the track list. I consider it one of the most profound and filled with love musical piece that I ever composed... Guided by its message, I wanted all tracks in this album to carry the same energy in a similar manner, that of going beyond the common life, into a more elevated and love filled existence. If I was successful with that, I guess only the listener who is intimately fused with my music is capable of telling, and none other... The bonus track (Alcyone) it's in the same vein, albeit it was composed and recorded 15 years later. This one is a departure from his more usual upbeat Jarre/Vangelis like offerings. Instead it takes the listener on a peaceful journey through meditative landscapes of the mind. As usual there are plenty of synthesizer sounds, with the addition of piano. This album can quickly become one of the favourite relaxation albums. The huge wooden pyramid, the very friendly atmosphere, the elevated public... A pyramid is a sacred place, if you know how to relate to it correctly. It induces an expanded state of consciousness and its subtle reverberations create an almost magical state, both in the performer and the audience. I played some musical pieces which I like very much and which I still listen to even now. 'Tiamat Response' is a variation of a track which has been released on one of the Special Edition albums, but the theme I liked so much that I wanted to perform it from another perspective, even if I rarely do this in concerts. On the other hand, 'The Ruler', was initially thought to be in a different form and duration for an album in the future, but I decided eventually to play this piece in the concert. I was pleased with the result, so much so that I kept this version. However, I am most attracted by the last piece ('The Dreamer'), which has been played spontaneously in a moment of inspiration having just a few directory lines and sounds prepared. I used just a few sequencers that were made a short while before the show. Everything there seemed like a calling from afar, and I entered into this dream of celestial sounds... Even though there was an encore, I have not included it on this album because there were some problems with its recording, due to a fluctuation of the electrical power supply. I am sorry, because this encore was a very successful improvisation, in which saxophonist Hans Hvass from Ibis band also performed. This remarkable series is structured in five sections or collections: RUBY, EMERALD, GOLD, DIAMOND and PLATINUM. Each collection comprises five albums. The songs are presented in chronological order of their recording, starting with the RUBY collection. Alongside the joy of listening to a very large volume of excellent electronic music, the ARCHIVES series offers the possibility of a true ‘incursion’ into the creative musical activity of Indra. It allows us to easily identify the different stages through which the artist has passed over a career of more than twenty years. It also offers us an excellent picture of the versatility with which Indra approaches different styles of electronic music (pure electronic, space, ambient, meditative, techno-trance, psychedelic, experimental). Additionally, it allows witnessing the evolution and refinement of his personal style, ideas and composition of his pieces. Even if these songs were never released, they are obviously coloured by specific spirit, focus and energy of Indra, often representing a laborious studio work (with the exception of just a couple of live performances, extracted from his concerts). Obviously, the tracks are not as ‘polished’ as songs from albums published by the artist; however this allows us to enter deeper into the mystery of his creations, making it possible to capture fragments, stages or ideas which we would never have had access to otherwise, if these songs had been published. The ARCHIVES Series is like a ‘gateway’ into the creative laboratory of Indra, a fascinating world if you know how to relate to it. The rich musical themes, vision and unique approach to the music raises this series of electronic music to a remarkable standard. If the previous series (SPECIAL EDITION – Tantric Celebration) was a sumptuous presentation of the Berlin School style, with the release of ARCHIVES we can say we have a complete palette of styles, expressed by Indra in different ways, from 1993 to 2015. Over the years, albums and concerts, the Romanian synthesist has collected a legion of fans which devoured his discography with passion, requiring for his first works. A request that INDRA has fulfilled with the re-editing of 'Turning Away', 'Kingdom of Light', 'Parallel Time', 'Plenitude' and 'Cosmic Sound'. I believe that it is a compilation made to measure for fans, so allowing them to follow the evolution of the Romanian musician for a period of splendor in compositions and productions because INDRA has produced not less than 12 albums for the era aimed by 'Interactive Play'. As for the titles offered in bonus, they are very good; "Synapse" being my preferred.
