Using a variety of hardware and software synthesizers his music reflects the Berlin School sound he has loved with a passion for many years.
As well as playing electronic music Steve also loves listening to other artists/bands, including Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Radio Massacre International and Airsculpture (to name but a few). Steve is relatively new to making music, only starting in September 2002 after trying a demo of the software program Reason. After getting to grips with the demo he went out and bought the full version, which he used to record his first CD 'Reflections From The Inner Light', which was released in August 2004 on the Groove Unlimited label. Steve is also a member of Astrogator (feat. Jez Creek), Magnetron ( feat. Xan Alexander) and Quadra (feat. Brendan Pollard, Jez Creek, John Sherwood).-Особая благодарность: visitor, jianniz Жанр: Electronic

His debut-CD with the great title "Reflections From The Inner Light" is dedicated to the Berlin School. There is a lot of retro-EM released at the moment, so to attract attention you must come with something special.
Humphries does that. Striking in his music is the fact that he doesn’t make use of instruments like Mellotrons and analogue synthesizers but that he does everything with the aid of software. The difference cannot be heard. In eight pieces he exploits the diverse corners of the Berlin School in an intriguing way. The CD opens in "Narissa" with all kinds of fat sounds that reminds of legendary albums like "Body Love 1 & 2" and "Mirage" of Klaus Schulze, calmly accompanied on the background by excellent sequences and easy rhythms. This sets the tone for the rest of the CD. There are a great number of very good compositions on the CD like "Touching The Void" that has a lot of Mellotron sounds and some extremely strong sequencer lines. Also is "Kaleid", again with fine sequences and drum sounds that are a bit more on the foreground now, an outstanding track. Humphries knows what he does. All music is played well an with much attention to details. Create has created a very pleasant retro-CD that might attract many fans of this genre. Жанр: Electronic

His debut-cd "Reflections From The Inner Light" was dedicated to the Berlin School and that is just what is also happening on "From Earth To Mars".Striking in Humphries’ music is the fact that he doesn’t make use of instruments like Mellotrons and analogue synthesizers but that he creates everything with the aid of the software program "Reason". The difference can not be heard. When he plays live, he uses (lots) of hardware synths though. This of course also makes a more interesting show. "From Earth To Mars" is an oasis of sequences, fat analogue synth solos and pads, effects, space-atmospheres and gentle electronic rhythms that -in case of sound- has references to the big EM-names. Especially old Neuronium and Robert Schroeder come in mind. Sequences play an important part in Steve’s music. It immediately starts with a wonderful pattern in "Light Bank". This is continued in excellent epic tracks like "Earth To Mars" and "Solar Flare". The music is long-stretched with a lot of emphasis on details. "Goodbye" is a tribute to Michael Garrison, the EM-pioneer who sadly died a short while ago. This track shows another side of Steve with more warmth and melody. It reflects the many creative sides of Create. With or without "real" synthesizers; it doesn't matter. Create makes good music and that is what counts! Жанр: Electronic

"Biospherical Imagery" is his third album. Again, the music is based on the Berlin School but there is a difference from his first two albums "Reflections From The Inner Light" and "From Earth To Mars".
On these albums he didn’t make use of traditional instruments like Mellotrons and analogue synthesizers but he created everything with the aid of the software program "Reason". The difference could not be heard. When he started playing live, he also started using (lots) of hardware-synths and now he also uses these instruments on an album for the first time. "Biospherical Imagery" contains five tracks from 2004 and 2005 that are played live with only the sequencer patterns and drum loops pre-programmed before hand. The title track is the central piece. It is almost 47 (!) minutes long. Now, that's more like it! In comparison to other works of Humphries, there is more emphasis on rhythm. In addition to his sequences, solos and ambient sounds, this gives the music a full and rich sound. The Berlin School at its best. There are also two short tracks on the album, "Endless Corridors" and "Mystery Voices" that are ambient interludes that Stephen played before he gave his concert at the "E-Live Festival" in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, in October 2005. With "Biospherical Imagery" Create again proves to be one of the best new forces in retro-EM. And his music gives the listener an extra "reason" to listen to the Berlin School again. Жанр: Electronic

May 2007 REM GENRE Electronic foobar2000 1.5.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 This is the fourth CD by the English electronic musician Stephen Humphries, better known as Create. In comparison to his first three CD’s, Stephen has changed two things. First of all, he wanted to return to recording shorter tracks. Secondly, he now only makes use of hardware synthesizers (amongst them one of the flagship-synths of this time: the Alesis Andromeda) in stead of software.
Two of the five tracks on "Space Time Continuum", the titletrack and "Fading Lights Grow Brighter", were first performed at one of the "Awakenings"-gigs. Humphries’ music is a perfect blend of atmospheric sounds and perfectly crafted sequences. On "Space Time Continuum" the best sequences can be heard that he has created so far. Take the titletrack, with which the CD opens. It starts real spacey, even a bit eerie, with great effects and SF-voices. After this a marvellous sequence enters and Stephen goes off with fine solos. The album contains two of the greatest tracks he has composed in his still short lived career. The first one is "Cryogenics". The piece begins with effects and Mellotronstrings, after which some excellent, menacing, sequences take over. And if that is not enough, "Footprints in the Sand" shows even greater sequences, as well as fine samples of the nostalgic sounding Mellotronflute. Well, is this music nostalgic or not? It brings back some of the best from the Berlin School. Жанр: Electronic

July 2007 REM GENRE Electronic foobar2000 1.5.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 During March 2007, Stephen Humphries had a nasty accident at his work, leaving him house bound and unable to work properly for four months. While being at home, the Englishman started watching the TV-series "Lost". The impressions of the show about a plane crash, leaving the survivors trapped on an island where all kinds of things are happening, inspired Stephen to record some new material under his artist name Create. Stephen has earned a special place in electronic music. He started with only a computer and the Reason software but later on he became a collector of synthesizers, new and old, and now has developed kind of a name in the retro/Berlin School area of electronic music. The nice thing about Stephen and his music is that it is growing with every album. Especially his sequences (not an unimportant element of retro-electronic music) are becoming better and better and have a special place on "Lost On An Island Of Adventure".
The opening track "Just Above The Surface" has traces of mid-seventies Klaus Schulze. An eerie piece like "Run For Cover" captures the atmosphere of the TV-series excellently. The best sequence on the album can be heard on the outstanding track "Paradise". "Lost On An Island Of Adventure" has become Create’s best album until this moment. The last piece of music, "Heaven Waits (For Grandad)" is dedicated to Stephen’s grandad who sadly passed away in November 2007. Stephen manages to come with a fitting honor. It means that music can say a lot and Stephen does that. Жанр: Electronic

October 2020 REM GENRE Electronic foobar2000 1.5.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 "Welcome once again in the electronic world of Create". This is how Englishman Steve Humphries opens the booklet of his new cd "In The Blink Of An Eye" under his artistname Create. Steve’s world is deeply rooted within the Berlin School style of electronic music. This is a style in which he became a well known and household name during the last years. He does this solo as Create, as a duo with Jez Creek as Astrogator or with a group of musicians as Quadra. In the beginning, in his electronic world there was only place for a computer and the Reason software but soon he started using hardware synthesizers, new and old. And armed with this gear, he could also play live as he proved on many occasions.
"In The Blink Of An Eye" contains music Steve composed in his Backroom Studio. Two of the tracks, "No Inhibitions" and "Collision", were played live in this studio. Steve’s music is beging built up in an excellent way. Where many retro/Berlin School-musicians use long intros with experimental effects and atmospheric sounds, Steve gets to the point rather quickly and starts his sequencers, over which he plays his solos and lays his retrosounds. "No Inhibitions" is clearly a fine example of Steve’s approach. The titletrack opens with soft and relaxing sounds, after which a great sequence follows. To speed things up, he uses very interesting rhythmic sounds in the thrusting "A Glimmer Of Hope". And just listen how fat the solosynths sound! A metallic sequence dominates the wonderful crafted "Rise To The Occasion". Here, Steve’s love for one of the Grandmasters of electronic music, Klaus Schulze, can be heard well. "Collision" again is played live in the studio. It contains a wonderful ongoing sequence that belongs to the most innovative ever created. "Wherever you are in the world so much can happen in The Blink Of An Eye", Steve says in the booklet. That is absolutely true. Let’s just hope that his career in electronic music will take many more blinks of the eye. This album proves again that Steve has moved himself in the top of the retro/Berlin School style of electronic music 2009. Paul Rijkens Жанр: Electronic

July 2007 REM GENRE Electronic foobar2000 1.5.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Astrogator is a duo of Jez Creek (aka Modulator ESP) and Steve Humphries (aka Create). The Darkness Between is their first album together that contains three long tracks simply named "Part 1", "Part 2" and "Part 3". So, reviving the old tradition of naming EM tracks, what do we get, musically? Abstract sounds get "Part 1" underway. The mood is appropriately dark and mysterious. Some choir sounds can be heard and then a chilly synth pad line. It's all dark, frosty and full of feeling - just the way I like it. Slight lead synth and piano touches are added. After the six-minute mark, a synthesized rhythm starts joined by a sequence a few moments later. However, things remain rather brooding and laid-back. Another bass sequence joins the flow after the ten-minute mark. The track creates a nice flow and could be used to accompany interstellar travels, having a fitting title too. A mournful lead line floats on top but departs all too briefly, only to return a couple of seconds later. My only gripe concerns the sequences that seem to be overtly static. There is an atmospheric section that comes after fifteen minutes into the track. Another sequence makes its way into the sonic landscape, accompanied by another quirky one and little by little we start propelling forward on top of the most active section of this song, lead synth lines all over the place. The track ends on this upbeat note, with bass sequences coming into prominence and then subsiding to leave us with spacey melancholic notes. A great conclusion! "Part 2" heralds its coming with sharp notes and ghostly effects. Excellent, moody stuff. A mournful melody can be heard that fits perfectly with the picture created by a mélange of electronic sounds. A sawy bass melody provides an extra oomph. This is dramatic and emotional music that I enjoyed immensely. Although I was somehow puzzled when it ended all too abruptly. Effects are once again what introduces us to "Part Three". This tine it's a bit more aggressive and menacing, with some razor-sharp textures and synth drones. Dramatic string stabs add to the picture. A frenetic sequencer rhythm starts that clearly supports this "menacing" mood. At one point the sequencer is tweaked in real time - nice! What develops further I can only describe as sequencer mayhem - with several overlapping patterns making things truly intense. A reflective melody is played on top with brief lead line flashes. After a while it all calms down to return to the initial atmospherics. Jez Creek and Steve Humphries have created a fine cosmic Electronic Music album. Knowing the solo work of both I was expecting some sequencer-based stuff in the Berlin School style and two of the tracks ("Part 1" and "Part 3"), indeed, deliver sequences in high doses, with the awesome atmospheric track in between (that's a bit marred by the abrupt ending, I must admit). My favourite track is probably "Part 2", followed closely by "Part Three". .

July 2007 REM GENRE Electronic foobar2000 1.5.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Part One starts with an otherworldly landscape: twittering synths, echoing sounds, distant Mellotron choirs. It's all very well executed and extremely cosmic! After 8 minutes, a bass rhythm gradually creeps in, giving more focus and purpose to the soundscape. A Mellotron flute can be heard, sounding melancholic, rather than mysterious. The rhythm then departs and a strange panned sequence emerges, backed by sparse bass beats. This is some intriguing music! A more upbeat sequence can be heard, along with a lead line. Even more sequences are added to the mix as the track becomes quite a ride. This is complex EM that beats most modern "Berlin School" to dust. The sequencing is really, really convincing and rich. A melody cries on top, and then another one. Intense is the word for it! Little by little the tension is released and one can hear some Mellotron choirs, although the pulsations are still around. As we are closing the 23-minute mark, only one bass sequence remains that soon departs for a purely atmospheric section. Really weird sounds and twitters is what we get for some moments, before it all returns to the melancholic / melodic territory, with gentle liquid soloing over the breezing soundscape.
This is simply great stuff and totally original, not a copy of anything! These guys sure know how to do it. This music is filled with cosmic grandeur and melancholia if you imagine such combination. It is amazingly gentle, without sounding twee. That high-register Mellotron flute really gives me the goose bumps. A minor-chord bass sequence interrupts the flow to take us to another rhythmic section. This time the mood is that of menace and even aggression. The sequences are straight 'n plain and the occasional bass throb only gives them extra oomph. The guys really let their steam off with this ballsy sequencer fest. I can't even count how many sequences are running at the same time. A solo is blasting on top, as if there was room for it. Everything them calms down, leaving you totally exhausted. Part Two begins in a similar manner to Part 1: the whooshing of the wind, subtle twitters... Soon, a Mellotron choir appears along with subtle lead sounds, taking us back to where the calm sections of Part 1 left off. Great, great music! A pulse appears after 5 minutes wrapped in a bed of Mellotron choir. The pulse gradually develops into a full-blown sequence. Various lead lines and atmospheres are added where needed, resulting in a very intense, busy and energetic EM track. A moment of calmness follows where everything disappears into the void. Another sequence appears along with a playful Mellotron flute refrain. I must say things have become very unusual by this point - distorted textures, some rhythms, strange sequences. However, a cosmic lead line reminds us we're still in the EM land. Little by little, things settle into a groove that finishes off this great slab of classic EM. - Artemi Pugachov / Encyclopedia of Electronic Music Жанр: Electronic

Re-Entry ...... 05:46 (24bit) Going through the archives we discovered quite a few pieces of unreleased music from 2012 to 2016. These pieces were recorded during album sessions but didn't make the final cut so to speak. After recently revisiting these pieces, we thought they were good enough to finally release, so here we are. Also included are the rehearsal recordings of our first two concerts (these are a bit different to the live versions) and a track which made it's way onto a Awakenings compilation. As there is over four hours of music this is a download only release. I have made some covers for those of you who want to make their own cd's, (the chronology was been changed slightly so that they will fit onto to four cd's) Hope you enjoy the music contained within. Best regards, Xan and Steve Track info: Dancing Shadows & Xerocole recorded during the First Light sessions on the 12th June 2012 Uprising, Into Battle and Aftermath (The War Machines) recorded during rehearsals on the 12th September 2012 for our first Awakenings concert. Ionosphere, Diffusion, Indigo & Moderators of Perspective recorded during the Quadrant sessions 12th of June 2013. Moderators of Perspective featured on the Awakenings 2013 Vol.1 Vapours recorded during the Spherics session 12th March 2014 Velocity 1-3 recorded during rehearsals on the 24th of March 2014 for our second Awakenings concert. January 2007, 8:35 for CD REM GENRE NEW AGE foobar2000 1.5.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Quadra comprise four of the musicians who appeared on the 'Hampshire Jam 'Jam' 2006' album featured elsewhere in this magazine. They are Brendan Pollard and friends he invited to his studio: Steve Humphries, John Sherwood and Jez Creek. Deep reverberating drones and a bass throb provide a very atmospheric introduction for 'Convergence'. Little melodies shimmer over the top accompanied by soothing mellotron. A rapid sequence nestles perfectly amongst the other instrumentation. A second comes to join it and we are soon motoring along in energetic, head nodding, fashion. In the eleventh minute things wind down to soft tron. A little melody shines above it all, echoed by the mellotron. Soft meandering tinkling piano adds to the gentle atmos still further. The track then seems to spend the next few minutes searching for direction. A sequence can be heard low in the mix but that is where it stays whilst various lead flourishes come and go but without really making their mark. In the twenty first minute a more substantial sequence surges forward, mutating this way and that only to subside back to tron and piano a couple of minutes later.
We then get a section of pleasant atmospherics which gradually becomes more metallicly percussive and sparse sounding. Images of dank rat infested dungeons come to mind. A heartbeat sound can be heard, soft drones lightening the mood which becomes brighter still as wordless vocal pads give an ethereal presence. The heartbeat fades away and is replaced by a tinkling sequence, slow rhythm then more sequences as things surge forward nicely once more. In my opinion this track was good for two thirds of its over forty minute duration, it just had a bit of a dodgy middle section where things became a little aimless. Initially 'Pastorale' is wonderfully soothing, with gentle tron and flutey synth combining beautifully. A tinkling sequence emerges in the second minute, then a rhythm starts up skipping along nicely. Flute sounds are particularly effective but the other leads aren't bad either. Sequences become more prominent as things get increasingly energetic. 'Starbirth' acts as something of a fest for mellotron and string pads. A faint beat low in the mix gives a hint of structure rather than any driving force, which in the context of the track is a good thing but I thought the track lost its way for the last three minutes as layers of percussion etc were added that weren't really necessary and only resulted in the track losing its focus. 'Heritage' starts in a similar tranquil way to the previous track, dreamy vocal samples adding a little detail whilst a slow strangely comforting throb can just be heard low in the mix. A gorgeous way to finish the first disc. The second CD starts with 'Emergence'. The first few minute or so are a little like 'Epsilon in Malaysian Pale' but then we get lots of twittering effects. A slow bass sequence starts up and I found my head gently nodding to it. We descend to electronic twitters once more in the eighth minute. Whining drones go up and down the sonic spectrum like an alien craft swooping high into the air then plunging Earthward. In the thirteenth minute a brace of sequences pick up the pace. They bounce off each other nicely, various 'melodies' coming and going over the ever-present tron. The sequences mutate beautifully but the lead lines were maybe a little over done. This stage of the track finishes at about the twenty-minute mark. Mournful plucked strings lead to a slow sequence (backed by more mellotron of course) then restrained drums and yet another sequence. Things quickly build to quite a head of steam before just as suddenly subsiding, allowing the musicians to regroup for the next sequencer based section. The swirling pulsations work well enough but the leads seemed a bit directionless to me. 'Astral Plane' is a slow dreamy track, the atmospherics working wonderfully along with a subtle bass line. From around the six-minute mark the pulsations become more prominent and things chug along very nicely. 'Callisto' is a lovely track featuring soft tones over fizzling pads. There's something rather melancholy, even spooky about it all. 'Take-Off' creates tension with the use of choral pads. The sequences slowly start to build developing into a strange sort of manic groove. It's like listening to some bizarre satanic ceremony! This was a rather frustrating release to review as if the best bits had been edited down to a single CD it would have sounded superb but to my ears too much material was left in where they were experimenting in finding the right combinations. If they had just included the bits where they were really tuned into each other it would have worked much better. However, at the time of writing this, it is retailing at a single CD price so ain't bad value. Review by Dave Law of Synthmusicdirect
