It might be interesting to mention that all original musicians are from different EU countries: UK, Germany, Netherlands and Belgium (by above order). They've made three groundbreaking monumental works together: The Case (1999), The Cube (2000) and The Singularity (2001).In May 2000 Kubusschnitt performed live at Jodrell Bank Planetarium together with AirSculpture. After release of The Singularity in 2001 Jens Peschke left to continue work with Navigator. The rest of band performed live at 9th Alfa Centauri Festival (March 16, 2002), aided by Marcel Engels of Free System Projekt, and Krautrock Karnival at The Phoenix Theatre in Exeter (June 7, 2002). After these dates Ruud Heij left to join Free System Projekt. Kubusschnitt reduced to a duo performed final live at National Space Centre in Leicester (May 31, 2003). In 2006 they released 3 digital albums based on these performances and rehearsal sessions. Kubient is completely new work performed in Utrecht during rehearsals for Alfa Centauri. Phoenix is based on Exeter performance with a pair of bonuses. Nightshade is almost complete recording of live at NSC. Journey Through A Burning Cube was released as a special compilation of several edits from the three above, including one new track from the mentioned Utrecht session. These were the final events of that line-up. In 2010 Ruud Heij decided to reform Kubusschnitt as a part of his ongoing duo with Gert Emmens. They were joined by original member Tom Coppens. Jan Dieterich was included for guitar duties at place of Andy Bloyce. They released another great work Entropy's Evolution in 2010. So far there's no continuation to this line-up. Around 2018 Andy Bloyce together with Tom Coppens started the activity to restore as much as possible the archive recordings of original Kubusschnitt and officially released almost every track that was in circulation as bootlegs among fans. They continue the restoration and will discuss a possible reformation for new recordings. The artwork has been changed, although the original version is included as a bonus. The group wEirD (emphasising the "E" for England and the "D" for Deutschland) was half of Kubusschnitt and this was the only release. There are a couple of guest appearances, as noted in the booklet - you just have to guess who they were. This one has been left alone, as issued, with no overall remastering. However, as a bonus there are "gently" remastered versions of "Klaus to the Edge" and "Manuel Gearchange". Of the three albums, it is this one that was conceived most as a studio album. The tracks were created in our different "studios", followed by some live sessions to flesh them out, which involved a bit of fun international travel. The final mix and master was, as always, in the Three Oaks studio in the UK. The final album was mixed as a single piece of music, with small connecting parts or, as Chuck van Zyl called them in his 2001 review, "...realizations [that] offer us a few moments of drift and an opportunity to peer into the music and ourselves". I still love listening to Chuck, excellent words from the master. The production on the original master was quite good, with the odd bit of distortion (mainly guitar recorded hot) and just a touch of murkiness, so again there has only been the need for light remastering (mainly EQ) just to bring out some of those wonderful sequencer lines and percussive rhythms. There are a lot of great dynamics across the album as a whole that shouldn't be lost, so the use of the compressor was kept to an absolute minimum. This has previously been issued as both "Exeter" (limited to 50 hand-numbered copies) and "Phoenix". It became a bit confusing as we sold a limited edition CDR "Exeter" at our National Space Centre concert - this version had four live tracks, with an edited version of "Kubient" added as a bonus. As it sold out within a few minutes, SynthMusicDirect wanted to re-issue it, so to make it fair we dropped a live track (Phase 03) and added two different bonus tracks. This was issued as the album "Phoenix". The version you see here is simple to understand, it's the whole concert, exactly as we played it (even including the guitar transmitter going crazy at the end of Phase 01). The lights were off and beer was consumed, then the music began. The original name for this (which is an extract from a much longer piece) was "Ambient Utrecht". The name "Kubient" works well, as it really was a Kubusschnitt Ambient experiment. The three of us enjoyed this one at the time and to my ears it still sounds good. The sound has been remastered, quite gently, with the aim of bringing the music alive a little more and bringing out some of the hidden parts lurking in there. Considering this was just recorded live to two tracks, and all mixing (such as it was) happened in the moment, this really is quite a good recording. I know it says Huizen, it was a slip of the memory and it's too late now, so let's agree that it's really Bussum despite what it says. This concert has never been officially released and it does get quite distorted in places. However, the sequencing and musical interplay more than makes up for the sound quality in my opinion. That's quite a few minutes of rare material. Neither "The Christmas Box" album nor the "Some Ambients" album was officially released - they were given away to friends, after which they were copied and passed around."Exeter" was limited to 50 hand-numbered copies. The tracks on "The Christmas Box" originally ran continuously, with the various samples playing across the tracks. I don't have the original tracks, so the version here is a remastered version of that final continuous mix. All of the tracks here have been gently remastered, although in some cases the distortion was there in the master recording, I'm afraid. We sold 50 numbered copies of "Exeter" and lucky number 13 won a copy of the rehearsal CDR. This version has been edited slightly and the sound has been improved. Whoever won the prize, still has something unique. These rehearsal tracks were recorded straight to DAT in the days before the concert. This material was on the 2CD set "The Bromley Sessions", although this was never released, just given away to friends. As this was our first concert, we ran through it a few times, trying out different instrumentation and arrangements. All of the versions are different to each other and to the final concert. In total, there is over two hours of music here. All track names match those on the live album - except, "Blood", which is a new track. Short Excursion ...... 04:41 Musicians - Andy Bloyce, Ruud Heij, Tom Coppens This album represents the distillation of over five hours of live-recorded improvisations and rehearsals for the Kubusschnitt gig at the 9th Alfa Centauri Festival on 16th March 2002. This deserves more than to simply be the rehearsals for that gig, rather it is a set of live sessions at Ruud’s studio in Utrecht, hence the name. There was a lot of playing and whilst this could easily contain the complete five hours, it has been brought down to the very best sections. Having said that, and especially as this was all recorded straight to stereo with live mixing, there are some dodgy/mistimed notes and patches of distortion. However, given that, the quality is remarkably good and only needed minimal tidying up. There are tracks on here that were played at Alfa Centauri and Exeter, some tracks that were played at both and some tracks that have never seen the light of day. The track naming is much more unusual and close examination (combined with using your ears) should work well. More extensive thoughts and comments will appear on the Kubusschnitt blog. Now, sit back and enjoy two hours and fifteen minutes of live music. Whilst some tracks will sound familiar, all are either different takes to the one used, or are versions before extra parts were grafted on. Where there was little or no difference between a take and the fniished product (mastering aside), that take has been left out. Finally, everything here has been gently remastered, as ever to bring out those superb sequencer lines. However, the recordings aren't perfect and there is a pleasing amount of Dutch mains hum to be heard in the quieter sections. The first track has never seen the light of day and it's an interesting one with movement from a very Reims c.1974 feel at the start, through to a c.1975 sequencer piece. The second track features guitar, although it is still a heavily sequencer-driven piece with the guitar playing mainly rhythm. This track has been out in the wild for a while - here it's been made to sound a lot better. The last Kubusschnitt studio release with (almost) this line-up was “The Singularity”, issued in 2001. Even the most recent studio album was released as far back as 2010 (“Entropy's Evolution”), although that one has a slightly different feel. So, is this a return to the style of those three studio releases from 1999, 2000, and 2001…? The spirit was certainly there from the three of us, but it’s for you to judge whether it sounds like those albums. A lot of fun was had from arranging the session, from listening back to hours of live material, from deciding which tracks to take forward, and from getting to this finished release. We haven’t been doing nothing for 20+ years between “The Singularity” and now. There were a couple of concerts and we’ve been setting about trawling through a lot of rehearsal DATs – and all of the good bits have now been released here. We’ve also been moving in our own personal directions, so our individual sounds have certainly developed and it’s nice to bring them back together again. To reiterate from earlier, what we can say is that it felt good and we hope that comes across. It’s been a difficult couple of years since the basis of these tracks was recorded at Ruud’s studio in the depths of the Dutch countryside. That was the other side of the pandemic and it’s taken us a while to work with the huge amount that was recorded (oh, yes, there’s more). Sadly, during the time between recording and release we three lost a very good friend and this release is for him, he was always ready to help us, and just about everybody else he came across. This release is for you, Tony, in thanks for everything you did for us and others in this small music scene. As for the music itself, there are a few driving sequences here and there, some subtle layering of background sounds, and quite a few solos. We’ll let you work out who’s doing what, where, when, and how. The basis of everything remains the sequencing from real analogue hardware – it just sounds so good. On top of that there are many different instruments, mostly real and the odd virtual one. So, to keep you interested here’s a release from Tom and me (Andy) under the name Penterakt. We were going to go for some strange combination of upper and lower case letters alluding to Belgium and the UK, but that would have been just too wEIrD. These four tracks were created before, during, after and again during lockdown and passed between us - at this point it’s difficult to tell who played what as there’s quite a bit going on. There’s even a slightly different mastering method on this release, so it really is pointing to that future full release with all of that additional goodness that Ruud brings to the music. All four tracks are based around a live sequencer recording, with the other parts added after that initial recording.
