Slowly more synthesizers and effects were added to the collection, which until today fill up his cozy home studio. He uses analog, virtual analog and digital synthesizers with a lot of delays/reverb effects. His compositions are done with simple sequence patterns ore a arpeggiator. Coloured Glass Alternate ...... 11:26 Guitar - Rik van Kroonenburg This being the first Skoulaman album that's being released under the Groove label, makes it a special occasion. Also the recording process was a bit more special than usually. Where normally a track would be created completely spontaneous during the moment of recording, this time a more structured approach was needed to be able to reproduce the songs during live performances. The fact that Skoulaman plays his songs completely live without backing track or computer, made it even more challenging. On all the tracks the arpeggiator of the Moog Little Phatty was used as a base sequencing pattern. On some songs sounds recorded in nature were added to the intro (birds from a forest in Boschoord Netherlands / Evening atmosphere Monopoly Italy / and streaming water in Wilnis, the town where I live). As always reverbs and echoes play a big part in Skoulamans sounds. On 2 tracks Skoulamans son, Rik van Kroonenburg plays electric guitar to beef up the sound. The title 'Next steps in evolution' is chosen because of the constant evolution of Skoulamans music. Creating an album under the Groove Label creates a great step in this evolution. It started a year ago when I met Chuck van Zyl during our life concerts at E-day 2018 in Oirschot (NL). Chuck asked me to come over to the States for a performance at The Gatherings. Chuck is the host of STAR’S END radio (www.starsend.org) and organizes the EM-music event “The Gatherings” concert series (www.thegatherings.org).
This was a challenge, because I could not bring all my gear to the USA. I was limited to just a small cabin suitcase. I had to use gear from over there and thanks to Chuck and all the people who loaned me gear this problem was solved. My son Rik was not able to come over, but Harrison McKay (www.tangent-project.com ) was willing to perform on E-guitar during 2 tracks of my performance. I remember me the long evening /night before the concert preparing the rig in the studio of WXPN radio (www.xpn.org ). We encountered a lot of technical problems, even the hours before my performance, but with the helping hands of all volunteers they were fixed. This CD contains all the tracks from my performance at The Gatherings concert. I made some corrections (shorter intro’s, some low range boosting, some little overall reverb, and attached some live outside recordings, recorded during my travel in the States somewhere between Portland and Philadelphia). After The Gatherings I performed also live at STAR’S END radio, these recordings will be available at skoulaman.bandcamp.com. It was magic to play in the St. Mary church, there were moments that I felt in heaven standing above the clouds, in two ways! I want to make a huge thanks to everybody who helped me during this performance. The people who loaned me there gear: Chuck van Zyl, Art Cohen, Jeff Coulter, Shawn Kralicek, Roycee Martin, Ian Stear, Mark Tajzler, and all other people who helped me setting up. The title refers to our changing world, where it seems to be out of control. People are moving around the world to find a save place due to the climate change and wars. this album is dedicated to all that people who lost their homes. Families and friends. Some of the tracks on this album are darker than I usually tend to do. I also use a modular synthesizer which I bought second hand and I was very surprised with the possibilities of this system. Thank you, Rene Chaigneau. Track one was recorded live in a shutdown 680 mW coal fired powerplant, where I used to work for, but due to CO2 rules the plant was closed and I lost my job. Happily, I was asked to assist in the demolition process (my new job). Thank you, Ruud van de Star. I had the possibility to make some live videos there for the Raumzeit II festival.
