To call him only a musician would not be sufficient. The term medialist would certainly be more appropriate, as he often connects his works with images or concepts that stay with him much longer than the actual music. The man from Hagen has a significant connection to the astronomical world, because as can be assumed, his "professional" career started in 1993/94 with the debut album "the cosmic dreamland" and a cooperation with the Hagen observatory.
Stefan Erbe belongs to the successor generation of the pioneers of electronic music and also references the usual grandmasters as a source of his own inspirations. Nevertheless, Erbe's musical signature can be clearly heard in the wide circle of traditionalists of synthetically produced music. His unusual gift of not committing himself to certain stylistic means and still possessing a real recognition value is rare and certainly an argument of his continuing success. In addition, the range of his possibilities is above average and offers from technoid popular electronics, classical Debussy interpretation to ambient, club, lounge and chillout albums. Erbe overcomes borders and simply mixes it up to his style. Always emotionalized, melodic and catchy. Erbe's combination of music and cosmic themes has also become a fixed part of the program of the Bochum Planetarium since 2011 and in more than 60 "Sound of Sky" events, Erbe has been able to implement events and concerts with top-class guests. In addition to electronic greats such as ATB, Chicane and Blank&Jones, Erbe has also hosted numerous other genre musicians with whom he has shared the stage live. His "Sound-of-Sky" series is unique in the planetarium world, because where many other facilities have their acts perform with simple DJ equipment, every Erbe event is always an evening of combined live music and custom star projection that will only happen once. In more than 30 years and more than 300 concerts Erbe has already visited many events and festivals in Germany and Europe, but he travels(s) very often to the Hagener Stadtwald to perform live at the place of origin of his astromedial birth. Whether solo or as a joint duo with Steve Baltes, with whom he has produced four albums under the name Baltes&Erbe since 2014. The work with Ashra keyboard man Steve Baltes resulted from a cooperation that initially led Steve to Sound of Sky as a guest. The closeness of both sides' musical tastes and a very special live chemistry, gave the EM scene a lasting and meaningful synergy, especially in live performance. Since that time they have already played more than 20 concerts in Europe. Stefan Erbe has realized several studio, live or other cooperation projects in the last 3 decades and distributes his products on the local erbemusic.com label. He has turned down several lucrative major offers over the years, always relying on his own independence. His ever-increasing success is expressed not only in the expanding numbers of his distribution, but also in the high acceptance of the many music lovers. In addition to his own studio albums, Stefan Erbe has also accompanied numerous external projects. Here, especially the time from 2009 must be named. He composed the film music for documentaries, DVDs and other productions, cooperated with other musicians and artists and supplied various samplers with his tracks. Certainly his track "When Angels Travel" on the 2014 album of ATB should be highlighted, which was number 5 in the charts in Germany. Due to his above-average presence, his large network and the many different product fields that surround his creative activities, Erbe has not been an exclusive musician for many years, but combines various skills and services under the umbrella of erbemusic. The fusion of author, lecturer, photographer and media designer, as well as insurance specialist for artists and creative people, label owner promoting young talent, event organizer and musician has certainly become a significant unique selling proposition of the Hagener. (Note: Insiders suspect that he may also come to greater prominence as a cat photographer ;) Erbe wrote for the German Synthesizer Magazine until 2021 and worked with Stefan Schulz (syndae) on the webzine empulsiv from 2011 to 2022. Many event and festival visitors know him as a moderator and questioner. Besides his astromedial Spaceworks concert series, which is almost always performed at astronomical locations, Erbe has organized several spacetime festivals and actively supported many other scene events. In most cases, he has given them organizational start-up help or has been helpful as a technical stage manager. In his music workshops he lectures about making music, explains technology and gives young musicians insights into the right workflow. In addition, he supports newcomers on the local Erbemusic label and also distributes albums and CDs by other artists. In 2008 he initiated the international music award "die Schallwelle" together with Sylvia Sommerfeld (Schallwende e.v.), who passed away in 2021. Until 2013 he actively accompanied the event as moderator and until 2022 as technical organizer (but never as voting or awarding jury member). What they all have in common is that they did not make it onto an official album. Not because they weren't that good back then, but because they didn't fit in with the concept of the current album. So they are now gathered together on the second download album after Querbeat deluxe and all carry the spirit of the first production periods of my early years as a newcomer. Of course they sound like newcomers, what else would they sound like?
But they convey something special, namely the sound of my experimental discovery phase and the courage to make something, without compromises, without corrections and without subsequent changes or reworking. Should I really make a "Best of" album or not?! Is it not only "makingmoney" and do not aim such albums to earn a few euros again with it. I think there are certainly artists who do not act or have acted according to this thought, but actually want to create a musical retrospective again. This was also always my thought, but I had always discarded it so far, because I could not realize a coherent idea for a compilation of my entire creative period. A CD with the best pieces? Hard to realize with more than 30 albums. So I came up with the idea to make a triology out of it and to release it bit by bit.
The first selectronic selection refers to the time between 1994 and 2004 or 2002 (the time between 2002 and 2004 actually contained a longer creative break, in which I was hardly artistically active). In 2002 there was a real musical break and the distance to my own music was quite big. I remember that I was not very inspired and I needed some time to start again with new music in 2005, but more about that in the 2nd part of the Best of series. The first tracks that can be heard on the first album the Comic Dreamland were already created in the time from 1992 to 1993. I had already produced a few very semi-professional tapes in miniature edition for home shelves, before a real music project should actually arise. During one of my first visits to the Hagen observatory, the program there offered various multimedia shows with astronomical content. Inspired by the fact that they wanted to make new contributions from time to time and were also looking for music for it, the setting for the theme of the Hagen planetary model resulted. The Bild(ene) contribution explained the history of this unique institution in the Hagen city area. In addition to various existing pieces, I also composed new material over a period of several months and immortalized it on a recent cassette tape. In 1993 a burned CD creation was sinfully expensive and cost in the piece well and gladly 20-25 DM. Each burned blank was a disaster and only 1-2 years later I decided for a small edition, which I even sent to some editorial exploiters. Besides the Keyboards and the WDR, there were also several local newspapers that reported about the music. However, I didn't really expect a big response, especially not that my music would be played on public radio. I only found this out when various orders were sent to me via postcards. Not only private people wanted to buy a CD, but also a distributor from the Eifel (Cue) ordered copies, which did not exist yet. So I was almost "forced" to produce my first CD. The Cosmic Dreamland corresponds to the typical first album. Decent songs on a badly mastered silver disc. I was pressed for time and didn't have the technical possibilities to mix the album on the highest level. The sound is in today's view a catastrophe and full of frequent mixing errors. I stand by the content of the tracks absolutely and believe that they had their quality for the time, because from the beginning it was clear, I wanted to develop my own musical character. That's how the typical Erbe style came into being at that time. Pioneer sequenced music with real beats and melody. Gladly with a hookline or just with an unmistakable Erbe sound element. Pushed by the first success it was easy to already work on another album. Somehow the impressions of a Florida trip and the then themes and concerns of the underwater worlds haunted me. Especially the topic of the dolphin death and the contamination of the oceans did not let me go and I wanted to make exactly this the topic of the 2nd project. Light of Sirius is the fictional journey of a submarine of the same name, which processes the diverse impressions musically. Also on the second album, a lot of newcomer mentality mixed with reduced mastering characteristics and the fact that I also had to learn a lot about the proper mixing of music. However, the content music clearly outshone the deficits and the response was overwhelming. I think without LOS, I might never have gotten past a "hobbyist musician" stage. Not only was I allowed to be the last studio guest on Winfried Trenkler Schwingungen, I was able to present the album in its entirety to a (then still) very large audience. The main theme of the CD, the tracks "Hopeless World 1 & 2" were emblematic for the upcoming Erbe music. In addition, all tracks could shine with an excellent construction of different electronic music styles. No matter if Berlin School fans, Techno disciples or Ambient lovers, the mixed sound structures, were not to be heard so far in the wider field of "EM" (EM is the term Trenkler used for the more traditional electronic music). This supposed uniqueness provided the corresponding popularity to establish also concert series at the observatory, which could attract quite a few visitors to the Hagen Stadtwald. Many Erbe fans call Light of Sirius their Erbe gateway drug and follow my activities until today. I am very grateful for that. Digital Entrance in 1995 was another example of the steady advancement of technical and compositional skills. Besides the music, for the first time there were no major mistakes in the mastering. The spread of the different genres within the CD was almost perfect and offered a very variable selection of commercial and more traditional tracks. A selection to the Best of album was really hard for me, because almost all tracks could have been used. In retrospect, the only criticism is the cover design. The booklet is and was not particularly spectacular and would certainly have deserved a bit more effort. But this is also part of the learning process. Digital Entrance was a great album for the time and got very good reviews. Albrecht Piltz, CD reviewer of Keyboards magazine at the time, also made this album a CD tip and helped to further expand the fan base. Who owns the early Erbe albums or knows them, will call Kunststoff, that appeared in 1997, a possible small setback. The song quality didn't quite reach the two predecessors and in total no special further development could be recognized. This was due to the fact that I had exchanged large parts of my equipment against new/other synths over the year and could spend more time in the application than with the actual composition. If I had had a label at that time, the advice "keep working on the CD before you release it" would have been the only correct statements. Of course there are some good and also very good pieces, but just no real hits like on the LOS and the Digital Entrance. But for the first time the artwork was more sophisticated and interesting. In the first review in 1997 it was clear to me that I had "slacked off" musically. But this would change again fundamentally in 98 on the Intermediate. The white album (that's what I like to call it) fully satisfied me and Erbe fans again. No, honestly it was another milestone and combined good music with a very appealing outfit. For the first time I had hired a photographer friend of mine who took an extensive series of pictures with me in Dortmund. The pictures were just a first class match to the music. Rather technical, with architectural influence and simple in color design. In addition, the title not only matched the exterior very well, but the title track of the same name was also a real "hit". It is certainly one of the most famous heritage tracks of the past decades. Intermediate also means "in between" and manifested the own claim with the own music not to be put into any of the usual EM pigeonholes, even if there are some tracks that are 100% attributable to the traditional EM genre. But it's the Erbe way of integrating established hook and beat elements even in Berlin School tracks that makes it something unheard of. This was again a major recipe for success on the 1998 album. The first concert, which took place on the weekend of February 4 and 5, 1995 in the observatory, I had prepared with enormous effort. Already one week before the hall was modified or rebuilt. Beside the complete "Christo-like hanging" with black cloth, I borrowed a video beamer (450 Mark rent), installed a truss with light and rotating disco ball. The offered music was accompanied by visuals created on VHS cassettes. Besides various 3D animations, astrophotos and color gimmicks, the overall atmosphere offered an extraordinary excitement. Only about 65 visitors fit into the small auditorium and one sat very cramped on scarcely 50 square meters. The regional press praised the event and the observatory and I cooperated in a friendly synergy that has continued to this day. Thus, over the years, a musical collaboration was not only meaningful, but positive in every way. This resulted in a lot of music, but it wouldn't always make it onto a regular album. That's why there were several compilations, which could finally bring together the collected material. However, United also immortalized older material and it was only available as a handmade CDR copy in a limited mini-edition. Particular X also suffered the same fate, because a normal CD production would probably not be so promising due to the special nature of the pieces. Spaceworks and the live album Worlds Away were also only marketed as CDR copies, although the former would certainly also have been successful as a pressed industrial CD. It was also the time when CD sales stagnated for the first time and you couldn't just sell a 1000 copies. Like many other artists, one could produce cheap, good and quite high-quality CD products oneself. This manufacturing concept, however, I have dropped from 2005 again and produce since then only "real CD `s". Oh yes. And there was Querbeat de Luxe. The first free Erbe album that retrospected various Erbe classics for the first time. But it's not a best-of, it's more of a "do it again better or different" album. It was clear from the start that it was going to be very commercial and aimed at making me and my music better known on the WWW. It has solved this task perfectly. If I had kept track of the download numbers for a few years, at some point I stopped counting the amount. In the first 2-3 years alone, it was downloaded several hundred thousand times. Also because the clue to the gift was posted on various press-related websites. I still imagine how it would have been if everyone had paid only 1 euro for it. But let's leave that alone. Querbeat de luxe hasn't lost any of its charm almost 20 years later. Cool beats, chic hooks and smooth sound. Those who don't know the originals will like the tracks just as much as the first-time consumers. Even today, thousands of people download this CD for free every year. And even if it has not brought any direct economic success, it has done its job. Namely, to increase the popularity. querbeat 150 Looking back, there was always the possibility to make one or the other "major deal". Means to give the music into other label or distribution hands. I have always rejected it and sworn to remain independent in all things, to be able to decide everything myself and to control economic aspects as I see fit. I don't know if I missed out on making that one good music deal at some point or refrained from doing something that might have brought me more into the commercial public eye. It was always more important to me to put my attitude towards artistic representation and the right steps in the foreground. Success is not defined exclusively by commercial success, click numbers on the internet or likes under posts. For me, success is a mixture of musical quality, authentic work and a multi-layered acceptance of listeners, concert-goers and my own demands. All albums follow the strategy of further development and I always put the following project in as much contrast as possible to the previous album. I am sure that each CD has its right to exist and always offered the next step to the realization of its own possibilities. Selectronisch vol 1 contains 14 pieces that are special in their own way. Either as a catchy earworm, as a frequently played live classic or as an example of the combination I call heritage style. If you are willing to travel back musically to the time between 1994 and 2002, you might feel the spirit of the music of that time for sure. Do you have to be a bit nostalgic for that? For those who actually already know the premiere journey of the Vol1 download, I now open another insight into the creative period of the Erbe universe between 2005 and 2012. As already indicated in the first part, a musical productivity gap had crept into my vita between 2002 and 2004. To be honest, I can't reconstruct exactly why there was so little musicality. Of course, there were always private and professional changes, which took influence on the amount of tonal output, but that it would not even make a Erbe-Silverling in the wide world, is in retrospect somewhat surprising.
From today's point of view, there is little negative to write about the 2005 comeback CD. On the contrary, Timesless (ok, the title has been used a bit too often even back then) still convinces today with great, partly also bizarre ideas, as well as a Erbe sound continuation, which moved away from the typical EM scene more clearly than originally planned. Timeless is one of the exemplary works in the Erbe tradition of making a very commercial album every now and then. But there was also a renewed sales risk for the current and upcoming records, because the more the music moved away from the traditional music scene, the more difficult it became to build a complementary fanbase that could hear my music through other channels. As with many other artists, the loss of radio shows, fewer concert options, and less general interest was clearly felt. Reason enough to develop distribution and not only play the music live at my own events, but to build a name for myself through years of guerrilla tactics. Although I was able to sell a lot of CDs in the first years, there was no repeat-buying automatism. Many fans of electronic music had gradually turned away from the genre. This was also due to the fact that there were few innovative ideas of the established greats, the media had no interest in the music and also hardly any musician managed to join the circle of pioneers, neither commercially nor artistically popular.However, I was always lucky to develop my own options that allowed me a permanent presence. Mostly, however, it was events that I either developed and implemented myself or I was lucky enough to be invited by media and concert promoters. My commerciality, especially on the current CD helped quite a bit. Thus, I was not only committed to the traditional track such as astronomical institutions, although this had become an accompanying heritage image since the beginning. Even if Timeless did not serve this in its entirety, I was always able to use my music in a very variable way. Synasthetik was another (successful) attempt in 2006 to be successful not only via sales CDs. As the second free album, it united various tracks from the last 10 years that had not made it onto a regular album. Since the music had very different origins, it was not a high-class masterpiece, but rather a small first musical review without best-of ambitions. Synasthetik had a symbolic value for dealing with artistic existence without financial risk and was quite neatly placed in the consumer's favor. Whether it would have needed the album remains unanswered for me. It has its qualities, but also a few lengths that might have been omitted from today's perspective. But if you consider the time in which all this was created, everything makes sense again. As an artist I needed this release to develop my own perspectives from the feedback of my listeners. Speed of LIfe as a 2008 CD had some parallels with the 97 album Kunststoff. However, it was not the most significant production in the continuation of their own music. It lacked a bit of a coherent concept and was subject to the technical changes in my studio. I had already left the analog production level for some time and composed, produced and mixed mainly in the computer. The proper use of digital synths, samplers and effects also had its downsides. Especially when the use of these tools reached creative limits. In retrospect, Speed of Life is the continuation of Timeless and offered similar songs as the 2005 silver disc. Probably this is also my exclusive personal view, when I state for myself that it did not bring any significant musical contrasts or innovations. Nevertheless it is a good album. However, without the claim of the perpetual renewal and change of their own musical concepts. The two following 2009 albums Club Genetica and Inside the Images were based on this important concept that the next album should be clearly different from its predecessor. Both CDs were based on a commission. Club Genetica, was a draft for a planned cooperation with a US comic artist. The product resulting from both elements was supposed to be marketed digitally and to let pictures and music become one medium. In the end, it didn't come to fruition because the visual artist expected a different kind of music and I didn't want to change the kind of music I was making at the time (yet). Erbes music is just Erbe-music. A reduction, that the music should stand as exclusive support for the pictures, did not come for me into question and I decided to throw the tracks again freely under the people. The result was a real hit, because not only with the outstanding track Wunderwerk I had created a very successful symbiosis on old and new EM. Club Genetica I had composed in about 3 months, using the musical flow that it sometimes takes to get great stuff done in a very short time. 2009 had a lot of real highlights. First, I realized a mega project in the city of Hagen and invited a lot of well-known EM musicians, the Hagen Philharmonic Orchestra and other artists to make music together for the 50th anniversary of the Hagen Planetary Model. The second would be the first time the Bochum Planetarium gave a concert. 2009 was the year of astronomy and I took advantage of the opportunities that arose. Both events were a great success, even if they needed a lot of preparation. Inside the Images put the Plabo event on a CD at the end of the year and for the first time I would also rearrange some classical pieces and incorporate them into the concept. Without my contribution to a sampler of the Bochumer Schallwende Verein, these classical interpretation skills would probably have remained unused, I had been able to produce the Pachelbel classic Canon et Guige for the sampler before. The sampler result at that time demanded more and I twisted the tonal basis of a few other classical tracks on suspicion. Who would have thought at that time that two more albums would come out of it. I also created a sampler from the concert of the planet model, which has probably become one of the most diversified EM samplers.inside 150 It is not surprising that the success in 2009 had done me particularly good and drove me to further musical processes in 2010. No less than 3 albums were released this year. Driver and Tagwandler were the complete opposite of each other. I think that 2010 was the year of compositional controversies and I had finally perfected the principle of my eternal new development. If Driver entered the market of computer-playing trance and IDM music with its sound, Tagwandler was more ambient and experimental. Both albums really rocked. Driver distributed itself more towards the US market, while the traditionalists surrendered to the sound of the green album. The second daywalking Wunderwerk number would signal that more releases were to be expected and ushered in the next round of Erbe-typical sound expansion. In fact, the term Wunderwerke was also on the table as a name for the current best-of albums. Why I didn't use it will be clarified in the next article on Vol 3. In the many years of my musical work I have always reflected and analyzed my results. The process of improving one's own music has always had something to do with change and with the mistakes one automatically makes. No matter if on a production, a concert or in connection with other musical occasions. I firmly believe that even today I am still in that process and can improve things. Anyone who takes the trouble to look at the Erbe albums will certainly be able to recognize this. Each CD represents another step towards the next level. Of course there are productions that describe this more clearly and not every time was as productive and sustainable. Making music is sometimes a craft in which creativity is only a part of the whole. But learning to use certain mechanisms and practicing automated processes is also part of it. The result is always the sum of different skills, which includes a little talent as well as mastering technology and its periphery.2010 I finished with the third free download album We are Generation Electronic. As with the previous two longplayers, the concept was to immortalize unreleased material on a virtual disc. These I had produced in the period from 2003 to 2010. In 2011, Sound of Sky took place for the first time in Bochum Planetarium and I organized more live events that year than ever before. Almost every month, I would arrange an evening of live music there, which would always be thematically unique. I sometimes chose film music, arranged classical music evenings or organized restrospective EM evenings. Always I formed a mixture of original music and complementary compositions, and avoided from the beginning a low thought of simple djing. I am a musician, not a DJ, so I blended each theme into the heritage-expanded music evening. The realization that the monthly Eventieren would become in the long run perhaps nevertheless too much, decided the equalization on 4-6 dates in the year, to which I invited myself now also live guests, in order to stand together with you live on the stage. Sound of Sky has its 10th anniversary in 2021 and I am proud and very grateful to be able to do this together with the team of the Bochum Planetarium. That 3 albums in 2012 take a look back at the Sound of Sky tracks is not only logical but very important. They show quite impressively how flexible my music has become in the meantime. The constellation of this ongoing creative process is certainly unique in the world of planetariums and their accompanying artists. The Sound of Sky vol1 sampler, which is available for a short time, is a compilation of Erbe tracks that have been heard more often in the planetarium. However, all tracks can be found on other albums as well and the compilation was realized by me only by popular request of my visitors. Also vol2 of the Sound of Sky series is an excerpt of an evening. Here old and new classical adaptations join on one album, as well as tracks inspired by classical themes. The complete music was arranged in 2 weeks of intensive work and I still wonder how that could work. Sounds of my Comfort`sone is also a cross-section of various Sound of Sky evenings. Actually a bit more score and cinematic than some other Erbe albums. If you listen closely you will recognize some well-known blockbuster borrowings and homages. In addition, a Merkur remix by Erik Seifert has made it onto the album. The piece can be found in the original on the Planet Model sampler. Since most of the music on the 2012 albums mentioned so far has also been from 2011 and earlier, there was still time for a fourth project that year. Emotiondesign heralded again a new Erbe era and should actually be located on the Selectronisch vol3. Rarely has the Erbe style been so piano melodic as on this album. The sound is often more sweet, even if there are a few poppy number. Emotiondesign has a very melancholic note and captivates with a lot of conceptual thought that was translated into musical elements. In conclusion, it seems that the time between 2005 and 2012 was not only extremely productive, but also very style-forming. The variety of projects and musical themes has opened up many new options from which I still benefit today. In addition to the discography, I would actually have to create a parallel list of additional concerts and collaborations that have not only influenced me musically, but have also been very beneficial in my work as an event and media maker. Each of the 13 tracks has an inovative feature and was chosen as the best album of the year of the Schallwelle elections. Method is certainly one of the most important albums I have made and stands in a row with Light of Sirius, Intermediate and the 2020 album Nachtlichter. It has just this special thing what you can not describe, but (perhaps) only hear. But also to choose the right track order is and was a quality that helped me to create the right arc of tension. I always invested a lot of time in the visible part of a CD, but with Method I left myself even more room for the cover and the final mixing. This "Method" was then also the name giver for the project and put almost perfectly the current Erbe-music-principle in the center. Method is quite commercial and has less traditional aspects. I find the term "Synthetical" very appropriate and would like to name Albrecht Piltz (former Keyboard author), who used and (remains to be determined) probably invented this term. It ideally describes the combination of electronic music with fluffy beats, embedded in slightly sequenced and melodic elements. Besides Cloudcontrol, the third Wunderwerk and What a perfect Day still stands out especially New York that is a remixed version of the first Carpenter Escape from New York main theme.
One year later Legacies was released. 2014 was the first real anniversary that would have deserved a best-of album. But I "celebrated" it differently and thought about how a Erbe album would have sounded exactly 20 years ago with the technical possibilities of 2014. So my realization of the compositions had been virtually scaled back and I dissected the pieces according to the working methods of the first albums. Of course the result sounded different from Cosmic Dreamland and Light of Sirius, but it also sounded different from Method and the albums I made before that. It was of course a challenge to keep the bar high after Method and make a good album out of Legacies. The pieces have become more direct and reduced in their style and also draw their tension from the different sound constrasts. The remix to Sound of Sky was added as a bonus. All other tracks, on the other hand, stand for 20 years of musical review, but again not as a best-of. In 2014, in addition to the own album production, there was another exclusive historical note. For the first time Steve Baltes and I cooperated together on stage. A first magical live moment was created during the Sound of Sky shows in Bochum and it was immediately clear to both of us that the bundling of both sides' abilities not only had potential, but would be the birth of a new great electronic project. In the past, with a few minor exceptions, I was not used to sharing my musical ideas or even giving them to other hands again. Steve, however, has this gift of taking each track and the idea behind it and making it better and changing it so that the song has a whole new look. I think this synergy has changed both of us in a lasting way and, in addition to the friendship we've gained, has added musical elements that neither of us would have been able to do on our own. Unlike my solo albums, we get together every 2-3 years to start a new project. I really hope that we will be able to start something new in 2021. The working methods from the joint live events have also expanded my own possibilities almost unnoticed. If I had otherwise produced rather quite classically DAW sequencer-fairly, I would now also create more and more live arrangements, which would find the way to the next albums notated-unedited 1 to 1. In fact, this can be heard for the first time on the second Club Genetica in 2015. Many of the recorded solos fall into this manufacturing pattern and have a similar vibe to the first Baltes legacy product called S-thetic². The title track of the B&E album I then also released in the first original version on the 2CG and describes above principle of both music projects in a very understandable way. 2Club Genetica is not a direct continuation of the first CG album. It is rather the name continuation to tracks which somehow all fit to synthetically produced fluids and substances. I was already thinking after the first completed track of bluishly iluminated fluorescents that would be dispensed in a futuresque club, midnight to strange creatures. The final soundtrack definitely fit the bill. The tracks have a swinging sound throughout and follow the idea of moving from A to B in a very casual beat. Hydrogenetica is probably one of the most distinctive hits, along with the fourth Wunderwerk, as well as Move it and the S-thetic bonus. But also on this CD everything fit into each other, even if some Berlin School lover might have wished for a few more retrotunes. It has just become a real heritage-synthetic again. The most time-consuming and probably most grueling project of my music career so far is the 2016 album Selectronique Debussy. I had been working on it for more than 16 months and am still amazed that it could be finished at all. The trigger to make an entire album of only Debussy interpretations came from an external request. For the first time, I had been tempted to produce an album for an external label or distribution channel and sketched out some initial ideas back in 2015. My client promised a lot, but ultimately could not meet the distribution expectations that could have convinced me to give the compositions out of hand. After receiving a mediocre draft of a possible record deal, I had decided to keep the music with me and distribute it as usual through my own label. Never change a running system I thought. How true, because this music concept has also worked out. SD is a mixture of interpretation, complementary arrangement and inspiring new composition. The music is quite sophisticated and stays notated very close to the original. As a result, the musical structures were of course completely different from the usual Erbe releases.However, in order to create a meaningful arc of tension, the tracks were orchestrated quite differently and are often full of detail. This calls for intense listening and the concept of experiencing the album multiple times. Claude Debussy's pieces are fantastically beautiful and offered a stunning option of varied interpretation. Additional Erbe compositions complemented the Debussy arrangements in a very contrasting way and brought to light some unusual sound structures. I'm sure this album gave Erbe disciples a run for their money. It is just not a typical Erbe album, but it has a quality that fills me with pride. I'm also sure that there won't be so many electronic artists who would be able to do a project like this. It's very different from Tomita, William Orbit or Schiller, who have been much more direct in their projects of classical music realization. Selectronic Debussy uses sounds and tones that significantly alter the original notation. Where a piano played a part in the original, I used an ambient sound, a filtered surface or something else abstract. This gave the compositions a completely new emphasis. One example is the Sunken Cathedral, which in its new ambient form combines the sunset and the surrounding water worlds very impressively. Perhaps orchestrated classical music lovers will turn up their noses here and the traditionalist sequencer fan will hear too little EM grid, but for me it was a completely new and very witty approach. In my opinion there is no real music drawer for this CD and its music. If you want to dive into it, you should get rid of all patterns and specifications of classical music in advance. Possibly Selectronique Debussy is (m)a masterpiece and I will still need a little time to understand it so completely myself. Oh yes (didn't we already have that in vol2), there was also a new Free Download Album. The Freedom of Movement is the annual gift to send unheard and unreleased stuff into the wide round. A bit too unnoticed as I think in retrospect. But that's surely also due to the radius of action of my work and the fact that sometimes there is perhaps too much output in the Erbe universe at once. On TFOM there are also two pieces from other compilations. One is the great Into Sunrise (Schallwende Schallplatte) and only one Step, which can also be found on a B&E album. Otherwise, no problem and as always, you're welcome! For a long time I had not dealt with the astronomical things musically, which I would finally catch up in 2017. However, there was only the idea of the concept and no real astronomical event. I was much more inspired by the idea of having a journey through space accompanied by a synthetic and not real character.GENE would be its name and add some selective moods for the album. But only so much that the head cinema would generate enough own imagination material. Thus the name refers also only indirectly to the genesis, but much more to the system GENE just GENE SYS. Nevertheless, the story offers a lot of room for own interpretations and offers a basis to go on your own musical journey to the edge of the universe. The fact that there is still a little red thread on it helps to catch the track moods. The music is space sound heritage IDM, to describe it in four words. Crisp and entertaining. Equivocal is EM of today and All the Stars is my Greek bow to one (m)of the idols. Albeit with typical heritage asides. The story to "Jiensis" (that's how it's pronounced correctly) is consistent and a typical Erbe stylistic device. Every now and then the musical past catches up with you and you look back, mostly emotionally. So also with the album Light of Sirius. First-time listeners of today will certainly not be able to take the spirit of the album as the premiere consumer from that time. It just plays a role, when one has heard what for the first time and experienced. In the consideration to vol. 1 of this Best of series I had already referred to the production errors of that time. Thus I always carried this stain of the bad mastering in me and decided now nevertheless again hand to put. Only the remastering of the original recordings was in the room and no new arrangements. In addition, I had found 3 tracks that were exactly from that time and somehow asked me to find the way to an album. No sooner said than done, the best-of tracks from LOS can be found on Selectronisch volume 1. The last album that I would like to finally highlight is Reflect. It was created at the end of 2018 and beginning of 2019. The process of completion was here rather fluid, I had already produced the digital version in 2018, so the decision matured the physical CD something to pimp and treat her to 3 more songs. Reflect is thematically very ambitious and combines the implementation of environmentally relevant topics and man-made problems and their abysses. The idea to reflect himself and his imagination in his music offered some starting points. The music on Reflect is quite angular and edgy, often using stylistic devices that are direct and include a harder beat. The Child of Aleppo was the first track on the album. It was written at a time when the world was looking at the Middle East and had to ask itself again and again, why does humanity allow so much suffering. The TV documentary The Children of Aleppo told the stories of different children and their incredible lives. For me, the occasion was to scatter my thoughts and try to process my reflections tonally. Reflect is, in the series of recent albums, an album with a symbolic character. All the tracks always had a thematic idea first, and then the music emerged. This way of working was a real contrast to the previous releases and leaves a unique album. To highlight tracks to use them on a best of album was really difficult, because each piece of music had become something great. At this point my review ends and I deliberately leave out the year 2020. The last albums are simply still too fresh to consider them on a best-of album. I think that they can then be the beginning of a new retrospective in 2028. I promise to remain active and to continue exploring the Erbe universe musically. His 34 albums so far have mostly followed the principle of change, of finding new themes and concepts. Even if he has always remained true to his distinctive style, his music has accompanied a constant change and even almost 30 years after his first release, this approach is his proven way to inspire his fans and listeners. So there is no question that "GENESYS 23" as the current release, also brings some innovations and opens another "Something-New"-Chapter. Erbe's narrative concept is possibly a novelty in the circle of the synthetically generated music genre and was or is probably rarely to be found (or to have been found) in this form. Perhaps Erbe has even created another milestone with it, because "GENESYS 23" has everything a perfect album needs. It contains an exciting theme, framed by 15 tracks that are catchy and very diversely produced. His music possesses those pioneer-based traditional elements of the current era and manages to straddle the line between commercial synth-pop numbers, contemporary traditional electronics and cinematic ambient. Erbe's sound has stood for a modern form of patterns of earlier sequencer compositions for many years, blending it into his signature blend of beats, pads and elemental melodicism. But despite the different styles, all the pieces come together to form a whole, because above it all is the story that Erbe tells in the form of an "Electronical". The futuresque imaginary journey of the android protagonist GENE is not entirely new, however. Already in 2017 Erbe had initiated the theme on the album "GENESYS" and provided a first idea basis. Its current continuation is thereby however clearly more complex and is available to the album consumers in several versions at once. The term "Electronical's" is in this context his completely new designation. It exactly captures themeaning of the album's narrative form. The narrative vocal bridges and linguistic additions are well-dosed and very selectively support the intention of the story. However, the album still leaves a lot of room for your own imaginary head cinema, as well as conclusions, hidden messages and also leaves open the final question of how GENE will decide. Ultimately, the question remains, how will we use artificial intelligence currently and in the future. Erbe's idea of using AI systems in the production itself was of course no coincidence. Thus, both musical and visual tools have been used, which can be heard on the album, as well as will be seen at the concerts. Nevertheless, the music, stands above the many levels of expression of this story. The 15 pieces internalize with an extraordinary acoustic commonality their connection. It is in particular the many sound details, the sound selection and recurring compositional elements that run through the entire album as a common thread. In addition to an English and German language version, Erbe of course also releases a music-only variant, which serves as the main release. The two additional language versions serve as the basis for his concerts and are available as 30 (2x15 German & 2x 15 English) additional bonus tracks. However, the story about GENE is not yet told with the current release, because the continuation of the theme is already in the works. It will find its continuation in the form of further albums and concerts in 2023. But it is not yet quite sure which chapters will be written and when and where the journey will end. Some of the tracks were always on my radar and I thought I would include them on the next album. But somehow it didn't fit or the current concept called for other ideas and compositions.
But now it was meant to be. And how! Because when listening, sorting and evaluating, a special feature became apparent, because almost every one of the pieces contains a genuine erbe-criterion. My affinity for assimilating pieces with corresponding lead sounds is not only striking, but is the album-spanning element of “Retrologica”. The logical analogy of this retrospective, so to speak. Nevertheless, this time it still needed a special arc of tension to connect so many pieces and generate almost 90 minutes of continuous head cinema. “Retrologica” is not a typical studio album, but it is also not a recycling of leftovers, but rather the reflection of an essential musical erbe-character that has solidified over the many years. “Retrologica” has also been given a few bonus tracks, which were either created as the basis for the collaboration with Steve (Baltes & Erbe) or have been reissued as remixes. s-thetic based on a record of the 2014 concert at the planetarium Bochum. They finished the album with some extended studio works, new amthospheres and special leads, giving the tracks a never ending deepless sound. Baltes and Erbe take this new elements and bring them to the following concerts as a new basic. They spent much time in the variety of playing each concert in a new way. As you might expect, A-11 is all about the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. After a short period of inspiration, both musicians had a clear idea of what the album would not be like.
It wasn't supposed to be a typical cliché-consumer product that refers to the recurring historical significance of the moon landing, but rather a consideration of the technical possibilities and how the two would find a musical interpretation to it. It is a sound retrospective with today's technique and the synergy of two compositional sound artists, who once again bring their special strengths and their highly praised sound aesthetics into one common project. The goal to continue the spirit of traditional elements of electronic music of the pioneer times with current elements has been realized almost perfectly, because the 80-minute story serves a suspense arc, which both delights the EM-lover of classical longplayers, but also comes along as an entertaining drumatic techno-soundtrack. Baltes&Erbes balancing act between partly Fourtofour-EM and a cineastic SciFi-Filmscore is a real unique selling point in the world of synthetically produced live recordings, because both produced a substantial part of the album in two sessions in spring 2019. Of course there was a Hand-On later in the studio, but who was guest of the concerts at the Hagen observatory and at event at the ATT in Essen, will hear a lot of elements and enjoy their immortalization. Their art of creating something new out of a supposed compromise of styles has become a rare quality, which they are now delivering again as proof after their albums s-thetik² (2015) and electric garden (2017). But how could they approach this astro-theme that hundreds of artists have already tried to approach without including the typical “more than enough used Apollo soundsamples” or getting bored with the eternally yesterday's heroic-recordings? B&E's approach is the technical realization of their music and the search for retrospective parallels. Those who know their concerts know the unusual use of multifunctional synthesizers, controllers, analog equipment and other technical achievements, which they regularly put on stage in rough quantities. One might almost assume that with their elaborate set they could almost fly to the moon themselves if they would installed everything in a pointed metal rocket. Therefore the parallel use of their computerized hardware is not only a tribute to the Apollo-11 mission, but also a musical challenge to turn the untested sound and his new formations, which often only arise at the concerts, into an audiophile journey whose final landing or destination is often still “at the stars” before the beginning. Their achievement to do the actual album studio work in two times live in front of an audience demands a high level of basic craftsmanship and a special self-confidence in their own abilities. But this is probably the most important part of the very authentic success that Baltes&Erbe transfer to the stage at each of their gigs. The choice of themes for the 11 pieces does not include "the big steps for humanity", nor does it “triggering a sequential flag” into the ground. A-11 is more interested in the AGC (Guidance Computer), the control elements or other technical components. The journey to the moon would probably never have taken place without these enormous achievements and the mixture of trust and doubt, euphoria and possible failure floats over all 11 tracks of the album. Baltes & Erbe also use these moods in their music and thus draw the historical thread from the beginning to the narrative end. Already before the recording it was clear that the 4 tracks Gradient, Sepia, Polyaural and Ultra should get an overall structure across pieces, which have not been heard so far. The mixture of sequential dark ambient and mechanized droning, combined with pianoresque phrases and deep pads can Baltes&Erbe like hardly any other electronic band. 24 битные материалы в настоящий момент не являются гарантией от транскодов, а как раз именно они и выставляются подделками, чтобы не проверяли. Я бы рекомендовал пользоваться модифицированной версией aucdtect Task Manager или fooCDtect (с предварительным понижением до 44/16 через foobar2000). А вот логи DR, на мой взгляд, являются совершенно бесполезным мусором, выдумкой неграмотных аудиофилов. Пусть мои рекомендации будут публичными, возможно кому-то пригодится.

Альбомы 2017-2020 годов на Deezer, Tidal и других сервисах, не имеют ничего общего с версиями на Bandcamp.
Транскоды альбомов Reflect, Nachtlichter, Breathe, Serbernity и Light of Sirius (Remastered 2018) имеют неправильную длину треков, так как проходили кодирование кодеком Фраунхофер, который искажает длину. |
