A title that can be interpreted in as many ways as the artist himself, or in fact the eleven new productions on the disc: free and unfettered, constantly transforming, for every kind of moment and fielding a wide range of talents.
Once again Kenji has accomplished the volte face of keying into his Asiatic musical backbone while simultaneously osmosing western influences and distilling the whole into his own unmistakable musical style. With sophisticated compositions and surehand keyboards, with no vulgar sampling orgies or casting around for the next best loop, and free of the typical sultry clutter of MOR-lounge-muzak.
The opening instrumental, “La Musique Japonaise” sets the agenda, with noticeable influences from YMO and Sakamoto oozing sweetly from every pore, complete with bass accents, subliminal pad sequences and caressing melodies.
The real secret behind Naoki? Allowing artificial sounds to reach out into bright natural light. Whether in the hypnotically far Eastern ambiency of “Haru”, or in “Oshistuki” - a soft jazzy dreamcatcher that gently echoes away -, or as a fresh Balearic breeze like the one that rustles past us in “Rain On”.
And yet: apart from his multifaceted lounge structures, Kenji can also - and likes to - put on a different style cap, just as long as it fits the overall music concept. Thus “Ashita No Taiyo” floats towards us as a richly harmonious trefoil with a meaty drum line. And “Tsunami” shows even more muscle as it plugs into the electro-groove: dark low-freeq futurism feeding on elemental power.
A special earmark is destined for the album highlights “Let It Flow” and “Bedtime”, both penned with the finest of pop instincts. The first is a homage to Naoki’s vocalist of many years standing, Dany Beck, who died after the release of Ecoustic, while the latter allows us to sink into a soft cushion of seductive song by Pat Appleton (singer of De:Phazz, among other groups). A delicate piano cascade here, soulfully interlaced guitar sounds there, surrounded by scented etheric scapesounds and a strong whiff of jazz – once again Kenji has drawn on every inch of the talent he has honed to perfection over the last 10 years. And both for the artist as well as the listener his track “Versatile” is clearly one thing if nothing else: an affair of the heart. Once more musically moulted, Kenjis club sound muscles become more audible again in some of the 13 tracks. Already the intro song „Ki ite Mite“ is a perfect example of electro house with its modern minimal character, skilfully shuffled and kissed by a sexy hook line. „Kitai Sasete“ and „Nana Umi“ bring in a brilliant, groove-hypnotic summer feel.
However, with songs like „UMI Prelude“ or „Stratos 57“ Naoki also turns back towards those abstract melodic soundscape that have built his reputation as an exceptional artist of the chill out cosmos at the beginning of the millennium. Kenji’s skills really come into bloom whenever he combines house with jazzy tunes, dissolving in an ambient sound and crowned by the gorgeous vocals of newcomer Shizu. Songs like „Hoshi“, „Umi No Oto“ or „Por Ti“ therefore are undoubtedly some of the highlights of the new album since it is not least Shizu’s exotic Japanese vocals that virtuously forge the bridge between east and west. released December 16, 2011

Traditionally it has a japanese titel named, AKATOMBO. Translated in english the meaning of AKATOMBO is "Dragon-fly" which has multiple of different meanings. Associated with a dragon-fly, Naoki went through developing stages of metamorphosis to become the versatile music and videoproducer that he is today. The twelve tracks on his album appear like iridescent heavenly bodies with transparent wings, hovering over a shimmering lake in the midst of autumn.
The first track „Sideway Swing“ enhanced with the plucking bass sound spreads a well-being atmosphere comparable to Adam F’s D&B classic „Circles“. In a majestical way Kenji captures listeners explicitly to the smoothing sound of the shuffling summernight-tune called "Final Approach“. As always Naoki is once again unbeatable when he uses female vocals which are combined and crossed from a track to a song. Perfect examples are the Electro-influenced „Tu Mirada“ and the smooth jazzy daydream „CeNuage“. Part of Planet Lounge’s secret is its structure: three reknowned experts for their profession choose the most suitable arrangements for their musical ideas. Today Christoph Spendel, Hakim Ludin and Naoki Kenji are synonymes for highest quality in the lounge sector. CHRISTOPH SPENDEL is no stranger on the international jazz circuit, a prototype crossover musician and multi-talent, whether as a jazz piano or keyboard player, composer, producer or as professor for pop and jazz music at the university of Frankfurt, Germany. His work shows various perspectives such as live-appearances at Montreux Jazz Festival or at the ‚Berliner Philharmonie’, collaborations with many of the leading artists of the German Jazz scene, as a support for the likes of Jim Pepper, Jon Christensen, Airto Moreira and no.1 US drummer Omar Hakim among others and releases on labels like MPS, MRS, Blue Flame/BMG and TCB. Born in Afghanistan, HAKIM LUDIN is an internationally reknowned Modern Jazz’n’World-percussionist, whose magic rhythms appear in numerous sessions with some of the most requested Jazz musicians around, as well as in many studio works and on cd releases. He has worked with Luis Conte (Yellowjackets) and the German comedian-legend Helge Schneider. His current work is CD recording and European tour with Germany’s best known singer Konstantin Wecker. Also as author and DVD producer Hakim Ludin has a great reputation. His individuality and lyrical approach towards music and art are constantly in demand for bigger stage performanes as well as for film and tv-productions. Japanese sound wizard NAOKI KENJI started his career as a keyboard player in Tokio and Osaka, deeply influenced by electronica heros such as Yellow Magic Orchestra und Riuchi Sakamoto. Like on the previous productions all songs are composed and produced by the three musicians.
Therefore the sound of the trio is defined by the musical sources oft he three personalities: Hakim Ludin with his percussion instruments from all over the world. Naoki Kenji, the master of electronic microcosm and snsitive programming.
Christoph Spendel, whose soloing can be compared to storytelling.
