Sparrow island is the culmination of a period of time surrounding a holiday to Malta with my wife in late september / early october 2012 , which inspired the ( probably ) infuriatingly catchy title track , and some others such as " view from an aircraft window " , which is supposed to be a musical representation of that moment when you look out an areoplane window and see the earth far below , serene and peaceful , far above the war , butchery , malice and corruption that you would never suspect was going on beneath you , unless you lived on planet earth. The sight never fails to astound me , as the quiet simplicity of the sun shining through the clouds with seemingly infinite combinations of form and colour detoxes the soul like nothing else can........It was definjtely one of the most definite inspirational triggers for the sparrow island theme. Sparrow island was actually the name we affectionately gave to a little cafe which sat on a little island in the middle of the promenade in St.Julians Bay , where the sparrows were very prolific and very tame. This , above all else , epitomised the whole trip for me , as it was so idyllic. Consequently , a lot of the material ended up being about geographical themes such as location , direction etc..... I was stunned at the response, and afterwards, thanks to a suggestion by Eric Fuerer, thought it would be a good idea to compile them into a remix album. It's been a lot of fun to make, and I've been able to supercharge the tracks with new equipment that I didn't have when I made the original tracks, hence the name "Upgrades" I didn't want it to be entirely remixes, because some people who are new to Carbinax, won't have heard the original tracks, so there's some New tracks on here too. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Igloomag Review "If you’ve not heard of Carbinax or 2ndMouse, now’s the time to tune in and get your fix—he’s amassed around 18 releases, numerous compilation appearances, and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. The 2ndMouse moniker, retired as of 2016, comes back to life in the form of UK-based Carbinax providing versions in all of its upgraded glory. Always one to shine with brisk, emotive, and rolling melodies that even Plaid would revel in, Upgrades: Versions 2.0 is a smorgasbord of luminous electronic music without borders. Take the opening vocodered beauty of “Phantom Limb” and its 2018 mix—modular bits meld to low-profile bass, the 90s-era Orbital versus Moby feel is an absolute highlight that merits repeated listens. And this is perhaps where Carbinax is able to let loose—that original feeling brought forth from the forefathers of electronic music, breaks, IDM, ambient, and electronica are simply fused to Carbinax’s music. “All Will Become Clear (2018 Mix)” is another prime example of vivid, to the point danceable rhythms and a few lightly sprinkled acid notes to close it off. “Pleiades (2018 Mix)” could pass for a late 80s Depeche Mode instrumental artifact, while tracks like “Strange Limo 2” offers subtle vocal treatments paired with a slow-groove percussion which has become the Carbinax signature sound. With so many avenues to explore, there are 30 tracks on this album providing the listener with swaths of electronics to consume. Another highlight takes shape on “Major Flaw (2018 Mix)” as an organic ambient stream of subconsciousness is fragmented by an array of crunchy beatwork. The staccato drums on “Lapse,” its drifting vocal bits and melodic shuffling creates a comforting sound space. “Biotic (2018 Mix)” is another favorite, its rugged beatwork and Boards Of Canada inspired intonation is a nostalgic calling in and of itself—”there is no other way” about it. There’s just so much to digest here. With over 2-hrs of music, one has to wonder where Carbinax finds the energy (and time) to craft such a blissful and organized collection. In fact he wasn't just busy last year - 2019 marks the 6th year that he's been kind enough to contribute to Touched Music for which we are very grateful. 'Above & Beyond' is a collection of original works and remixes, guaranteed to tickle your eardrums and turning up the volume. If you've followed the label for a while there's a good chance you're going to recognise a couple of the tracks here, as they appear either reworked by other talented artists or by Carbinax himself as alternate versions. Everything has punch here. The sound is full and immersive, layers are rich and nothing feels extraneous. 'Morgana' is a really confident piece, heavily processed with jarring yet somehow fluid transitions between the concrète-style chopped female vocals. The tracks have the kind of pace that I like. I'm equally happy closing my eyes and trying to concentrate as I am having this on in the background. The only problem with the latter is that I start rocking at my desk and my colleagues usually look at me like some kind of pleb. I'm not ashamed though, I can't help it with pieces like 'Walking In My Shoes', where staccato leads contrasts cadenced pads nicely. Pacing is certainly something the author likes to play with also, with two good examples back-to-back that I shall tackle back-to-front. 'Scars' is a fantastic exercise in perception alteration - the inclusion of only one or two extra elements manages to perfect the frequent transitions between a rolling & progressive rhythm into something somewhat more measured & back again. It's hard to explain but easier to listen to and beautifully executed. 'Fracture' just manages to trick me, it's got a strong theme and a deceptive opening. One could be forgiven for thinking the opening 90 seconds will take you into an ultra-modern twist on a broken drum & bass journey, that ultimately settles for being something a lot more down-tempo. Great vocal work here though, the track-name is very fitting. The inclusion of 'Tiger By The Tail' as the opening track truly makes me happy. Having previously appeared on the Found Sound compilation it's nice to hear a different version, albeit with subtle differences. It was a treat then and it's a treat now with an extended ending and a fuller sound. Regulars Plaid have offered a remix also, and it's the second time recently I've heard them depart from their signature style with a drone reworking. I'm not complaining, I always loved drones and this sounds like a very very healthy example of grain clouds. And the other remixes are of good quality also. Fearful Symmetry also tackle 'Tiger by the tail', with an interesting technique that feels like they've managed to split the melody sequence over multiple instruments. It's good and if it increases the number of versions of this track currently in the wild I am happy. Carbinax lends his style to pieces from Ariadne's Labyrinth, Keiss, Min-Y-Llan, Pushkin & Nisho. All talented artists in their own right and it's great they appear here reworked. It's good to hear 2ndMOUSE material here too. If you think you've heard 'Out of my control' before it's because you probably have, it was the opener for 'The Secret Chords' (also on Touched Music) and it's still as emotive and fun as it ever was. 'Strontium Dogs' also gets a remix taking it to a darker place from its original incarnation. I don't know who you are Stellaria Nemorum but thank you for doing this. Outside of the mentioned highlights there's a lot of other good material here, from 'Memories of an Avatar' that invokes 80s-montage happy feelings, through the punchy 'Eskimo Girl', the almost-sleazy 'High Jinx' and 'Groove Dependency', aptly-named as you can really get locked in to this one and it's easy to understand how the artist may have felt when producing it, building things up nicely to make a completed piece. There's always one track that gets me more than others and this time it's 'Tesla Coil'. I like this a lot. It's just one of those things that I can't explain but my brain very much agrees with it. For those in the future who may stumble upon this, when the current situation is all but a distant memory, Immuniverse is just another way of describing "a safe place" in the midst of an 18 month global pandemic. It's not, as the common parlance calls them, a "covid album", as I would've been making music anyway, regardless of the plans and stratagems of johnny-come-lately micro-organisms. Immuniverse was originally released on the L50 label on May 14th 2021, albeit a smaller version with 8 tracks, and a limited run of 50 CDs. This would be the "deluxe" version, and adds an extra 7 tracks, making it the expanded immuniverse. I wanted to add more tracks, and tried to, but, due to space limitations, I could only get 15 tracks on the cd. Instead, I've decided to release what I hope might be a series of ambient albums if there is an appetite for it. I chose the name Parallax for quite a few reasons. 1. Parallax is a combination of Parallel + Carbinax ( Parall-ax ) because I'm making ambient tracks at the same time as the more diverse Carbinax sound, which, as you're probably now aware, includes those adventures in mystery known as Cult48 cult48.bandcamp.com/album/from-the-ashes 2. Parallax is defined as "the effect whereby the position or direction of an object appears to differ when viewed from different positions, e.g. through the viewfinder and the lens of a camera", so it's about observing things from a different viewpoint. 3. The word "parallax" has two parallel lines in it, which further enforces the parallel workflow of making Carbinax tracks and Parallax tracks simultaneously.
