Via the Elastic Dreams label, A Sagittariun has issued a handful of 12” discs, each one armed with breadth and sustenance, exploring the outer reaches of deep and thoughtful electronic music, where possible accompanied by a message of hope. Using the dream process as a springboard for musical activity, A Sagittariun has indulged in astrological techno, spiritual house music, bass heavy dub rhythms and ambient paths, culminating in the debut album, ‘Dream Ritual’, released on the first day of the Sagittarius’ zodiac timeframe, 2013. 'The Circle Stops Somewhere' received an incredible amount of DJ Support, with venerable jocks like Lawrence, Craig Richards, Peter Van Hoesen and Gilb'R all chiming in with plaudits well beyond the usual 'support' nonsense. The label's latest, 'Carina', combines afrobeat, dub, jazz, Detroit soundscapes and British electronica to create the sort of varied EP that is rarely heard these days. While the tempos, rhythms and feelings shift from track to track there's a deeper theme that joins them and it's the unmistakable references to a time when house/techno meant more than heads down, 4:4 club fodder. Two highly acclaimed albums in “Dream Ritual” and “Elasticity” as well as fifteen EPs have appealed to those who like their techno without frontiers, taking in blistering 140BPM techno, breakbeat IDM and ambient dub with ease. His second release for Hypercolour displays signs of crossover appeal at long last… Lead track “Vanishing Point” has already been receiving early plays from the likes of Laurent Garnier (dropping it in his recent Timewarp Germany set), Spencer Parker and Len Faki. Big pumping beats and spiralling FX fall aside to a lone breakbeat that ushers in one pretty special breakdown section. The childlike keys and fathoms deep synth stabs (straight out of the John Carpenter school of fathoms deep synth stabs) have already drawn comparisons to the retro 80s vibes to be heard on the American sci-fi horror series Stranger Things. It’s a breakdown that takes the listener to an uncharted dimension, bookended by slammin’ beats that acts as a perfect mood changer in any set. Watch this one soar! “The Pathway” keeps things on an all together straighter tip; an incessant tribal loop weaves and filters around a thunderous kick and shuffling hats, ebbing and flowing all the way in what might be A Sagittariun’s most club-centric and stripped back production yet. Matrixxman (Dekmantel/Spectral Sound) is on hold to deliver a superb remix; pushing the original down a long dark tunnel for a growling and reverberating techno overhaul. A Sagittariun - Heresy (5:14) Before the recent rise in '90s style psychedelic, ambient influenced electronic music, one of the only producers offering up this kind of hallucinatory revivalism was A Sagittariun. On the ‘Minor Malfunction’ single, the one born under the 9th sign returns to Dense & Pika’s Kneaded Pains, with a brace of linear techno jams. The Bristol based, techno dream weaver, has always operated on the Outer Rim of the techno and electronica galaxy, but has, and remains, a sound shaper and influencer, via releases for esteemed labels such as Running Back, Idle Hands, Hypercolour, Craigie Knowes, and his own Elastic Dreams imprint. ‘Minor Malfunction’ hurls a pacey and swinging minimal techno beat high up into the stars, as a quirky and funky infusion of choppy pulses and dubbed out tones are showered in transcendental bleeps. Here, for Rekids, the Bristolian producer indulges his weightier influences to deliver a release that was literally made for the label. Stumbling, off-kilter drums open the release on ‘Inner Frontier’, moving into a breakdown of synthesised bliss, as a barrage of FM tones dart across the stereo spectrum before the familiar thud of the 4/4 kick returns. On the flip, ‘Annihilating Rhythm’ twists and turns through flanged-out percussion and gritty synthesis before the sound of a car and the titular vocal sample flies through the mix, destined to generate mayhem on dancefloors.
