I was born and raised in Tel Aviv, Israel, a second generation to immigrants from Yemen. At a very early age I showed a strong tendency for creativity, spending a great deal of time painting and copying scenes that I saw in the movies. My parents encouraged me to take art classes at the Tel Aviv Museum and a year later I enrolled in V.I.Z.O High School for the Arts. I got my first guitar at the age of twelve. Many of my friends and I were drawn to the spirit of the 60s and spent hours playing and singing the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Pink Floyd and others from that era. In the 80s I moved to New York to complete my art studies and I joined the Art Student League Academy majoring in classical drawing, painting, sculpting and etching. At the same time I discovered my love for Spanish culture and music and started taking flamenco guitar lessons at the A.I.G (American Institute for Guitar). During the same period I was introduced to the poets Nathan Zach and Allen Ginsburg which opened a wide window into the world of poetry. At the beginning of the 90s I made my first trip to Spain to broaden my knowledge of Spanish music. At the end of the decade I met three other musicians and together we create a musical group named DIWAN. Together we recorded a fusion album based on the traditional music of Yemenite Jews. As the new millennium started I moved to Seville, Spain and began an art project called “WOMBS”; I ended up spending almost a decade in Seville. In 2006 I participated in the recordings of the GLOBUS project in Los Angeles and during the summer of the same year I performed at the Wembley Arena, London with the same project. As an extension of the “WOMBS” project I created and recorded the album Jewellery of Love&Death. Back in 2003 I moved to Spain to make an art project about birth and death which I called “Wombs”. Initially, I planned to make that project by painting, but ultimately, for technical preferences, I chose to work with photography. At the same time I accompanied the work with writing my thoughts, poems and short stories. All are semi autobiographic drawings of my life experiences. Slowly, I started exploring the text, searching for compositions to the lyrics which later I gathered to group of songs, creating the full album – Jewellery of Love&Death. The Death concept does not refer to physical dying but serves as a metaphor for the temporariness, the emigrant status of being a stranger, a constant seeking and the inevitable departure. The intimate introversive landscapes of the songs expressing the constant search for compassion and sympathy, unsurprisingly growing as death approaches. My immediate choice was to preserve the character of the text as a story. Rather than following a classic format of a verse – refrain with rhymes, I kept the songs free of texture. The verses are not necessarily equal in length or order and occasionally the refrain does not exist. Music wise, the boundaries between the songs are vague, giving a sense of hearing the album from beginning to end as an endless lullaby song. Recording the album live was the better way to capture the ¨story telling¨ feel. The jazz musicians played a significant role in giving the intimate sound which escorts the album like a moon in a night walk. At times, it feels like the singing is an echo to the music and vice versa. This dialogue stretched the songs to an extensive time length. I was privileged to have such extraordinary musicians take part in creating the album. All are very well known in the contemporary world jazz scene . Production by Simon Starr
