A quiet force in the trenches of the electronic dance music wold, Reso — the alias of Alex Melia — has been called on by a diverse array of contemporaries including Burial & Jamie Woon, for whom he has engineered, and remixes for guitar heroes Animals as Leaders, grime kingpin Wiley and dance music legends The Prodigy and Carl Cox. After a two-year break following his Ricochet LP for Hospital Records, during which he scored a new virtual reality game for PlayStation 4, Reso returns with four tracks of spirited dance music that mark the inaugural release on his RX0 label. The EP is driven by two upfront drum & bass productions that highlight Reso’s attention to detail and flair for music with an epic scope. ‘Kodama’ is an eight-minute long excursion of relentless drums, tight edits, and roaring bass lines that jolts you to action. On the flip side ’Tiberium’ plays with a bright, uplifting lead before plunging into a rolling break and warm bass offset by soft keys and female vocals. This is drum & bass as sweeping, cinematic compositions not just dancefloor music by the numbers. The EP also showcases other sides of Reso’s sonic world with the instrumental break of ‘Fluid Mechanics’ resetting the mood and contrasting against the rush of ‘Kodama’ with atmospheric tinges, floating keys, and soaring guitar riffs. For the second release on the label, Reso has chosen two productions that act as a counterpoint of sorts to the first EP. Where RX001 was a broad mission statement, RX002 is a laser-focused burst of breaks, moods, and programming finesse. ‘Avenoir’ is a dedication to Reso’s roots, a tip of the hat from the man today to his younger self. This is most evident in the way breaks are chopped, layered, and sequenced to feed tension and tease expectation. A student of the artform, Reso also tips his hat to early pioneers like Dillinja, Paradox, and Goldie. Rubbing against the youthful exuberance of this rhythmic ride is the older Reso, a man with a better understanding of melodic progression, chord sequences, and song structure. The result is what Melia refers to as “prog jungle” with guitars, pads, and ambient melodies easing the breaks in and evolving throughout, guiding the listener towards memories that haven’t happened yet — an idea implied by the track’s name, a noun invented by John Koenig and meant to represent, “the desire that memory could flow backward.” On the flip side of this prog jungle escapade is ‘Chibaku Tensei’ (Japanese for planetary devastation), another expansive production that riffs on darker shades of the same ideas: intense drum manipulations, with breaks cut sharp and twisted to breaking point, mood-setting ambient pads for short bursts of respite, and tense but necessary forward motion. Both tracks were cut to 45rpm on vinyl for maximum dancefloor impact while the digital release includes a bonus track, ‘Aural Animation’, a tongue-in-cheek roller that indulges musical fantasies, the ideal soundtrack to a car ride into space. Powering up these new machines was a 25-stage process—one misstep and you’re back to square one looking like a complete rookie. Today, she would be showing off the Slime Militia’s newest tech to a very important person; someone who, she was told, must be absolutely impressed by the end of the demonstration. Her commanding officer had made this clear to her in no uncertain terms. She was pretty sure that if she messed this up the rest of her career would be in a windowless room, switching records from one format to another. After what felt like the hundredth corner, she emerged in to a vast hangar lined with gantries and strip lights. Either ends featured vast pneumatic doors spanning the walls in their entirety, both of which were currently closed. In the centre was a small cluster of GasPods dressed in well pressed military uniform, clusters of medals flowing from their shoulders. As she got closer she could see they were grouped around someone she hadn’t seen before. He was dressed in a suit that struck her as old, but well looked after. They noticed the pilot arriving and the Colonel gestured towards her, raising his voice and saying, “Dr. Zee, this is Lieutenant Hopps. She’ll be the pilot for our field test today.” released May 21, 2018

Every threat she had been up against had been less than no match and as she grew more comfortable piloting the thing, the rest of the Slime Militia's arsenal seemed increasingly obsolete. She did not feel entirely comfortable with the power she wielded - having the power to level cities in an afternoon was a little tough to rationalise - but orders were orders, and her training had been thorough. Her comms buzzed with an incoming transmission. “Lieutenant, we’ve received a distress signal from one of our refuelling facilities on the southern continent. We couldn’t get details on the threat before their communications went down completely. Please investigate immediately, we’re transmitting the coordinates now.” “Message received, en route now.” She flipped a few switches, bringing the machine airbourne and rearranging the exterior panels in to a more aerodynamic formation. She accelerated into the upper atmosphere and began to head south toward the now dark facility.
Once she was within a few hundred kilometers she dropped down closer to the surface, skimming just above the treetops to hopefully avoid any enemy scans that might pick up her arrival. She could already see huge plumes of black smoke winding up into the sky; nothing good had happened here. As she got closer she couldn’t detect any life signs, or suspect heat signatures, so she came to land in the centre of the Militia stronghold. The entire place was a ruin; every building had been completely destroyed with just piles of rubble outlining what must have previously been quite an extensive refueling operation. She had no idea what could cause this level of destruction.
Her motion sensor feed started flashing red, an alarm going off in the cockpit. She wheeled around to locate where the new movement was coming from. A large stack of rubble began to shift and slide, and a gigantic machine much like hers pulled itself in to a full standing position bringing an array of terrifying weapons to bear. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing. She thought she was piloting a one of a kind. Her memory flashed back to Dr. Zee’s cryptic words, “…I can’t wait until it meets the other one…” Whilst caught in the memory and panic, her HUD lit up with weapon lock warnings, alarms blaring, and within seconds multiple missiles struck the torso of her machine, completely crippling one arm and causing some serious damage to the armored fuselage that protected the GasPod pilot. She rocketed straight up into the sky to try and gain some distance whilst radioing back to her commanding officer. The other machine was close behind her, just seconds away from unleashing another volley of missiles in her direction.
Her comms channel clicked open, “What is it Lieutenant?” She gasped for air through the panic, and screamed, “There’s another one!” “What do you mean another one?” barked the voice on the other end of the line. “Another machine, another one of these things. It got the jump on me, I’m not sure I can--” The line went dead. The general stood in a dark war room screaming at the communications officer to get the line back. There was nothing they could do, the machine was lost, and who knows what could be next. released April 22, 2019
