The link between Phil Napoleon and Red Nichols does not stop at their meeting on this record under the auspices or a new CD edition. The present disc opens with recordings of Red Nichols (five sides in all) and presents him leading his own band, whether it be Red Nichols and His Orchestra or Red and his Big Ten, nine or ten musicians in all. Part of the space devoted to Phil Napoleon includes small formations - five to seven musicians. Phil and Red both were important musicians and both had to suffer from a relative critical exclusion reserved by some to white jazz musicians. Phil recorded a large number of sides between the twenties and the thirties, a time at which he knew considerable success. Red recorded no less but sufferred, specially in his own country, from being violently rejected by the critics who insisted in seeing him as an imitator ot Bix Beideibecke or as a "cold" musician without a soul. Let us remark here that Phil never was subjected to such a trial as, by then, no more was heard of him. A few wise minds, and among them Daniel Nevers, who pay more attention to the music than to the skin colour of the interpreters, did not fail to remind the deaf that it was all in their interest not to neglect what is indeed not negligeable. The main difference between Napoleon and Nichols has, of course, nothing to do with the choice of orchestral format or of the musicians (one finds Jimmy Dorsey and Miff Mole playing with both). Red Nichols was much more innovative. His musical conception was more polished: "A mathematician, Red Nichols liked to construct complicated and refined soli with a number of harmonic and rythmic peculiarities that were pretty audacious and well ahead of the times." (Daniel Nevers). One would be tempted to qualify it as "Chamber jazz" - and not as "cold chamber" as some would make us believe. Phil Napoleon's line was distinctly attached to the past. Having founded the Original Memphis Five in 1921, he kept trying to recreate a certain vision of jazz, that inaugurated by the Original Dixieland Jazzband, a style based on the "collective" which obviously evolved as years went by towards more precision and polish. Phil Napoleon, alias Filippo Napoli • whose first name was John according to some - was bom in 1901 and Red Nichols in 1905. One was of Italian descent, the other of Irish origins. Red Nichols was a trumpet virtuoso when Phil's main concern was to blend in the ensemble rather than shine as a soloist. Two conceptions of jazz, two distinct lines amoung the white school which, at times, cross and mix -under the auspices of "sweet music" for exemple, a tame style of honeyed up jazz (Take your linger out ol my mouth). Exceptionnal though it was, this confluence answered the commercial demand of the time but the musicians never sacrificed "true jazz" on its altar - a jazz spawned perhaps by a single father but whose children did not necessarily ressemble.
