Baron dare says that we get nearer the original tonal and emotional truth by performing folk music as jazz/pop arrangements than as classical music arrangements.
Karelia group were surprised at the music treasure of their folk music as they studied some original recordings. Previously their image of Finnish folk music was very concise and not very pleasant (because of the music education of Finnish schools). As many jazz compositions have proved, jazz has used a lot of folk music in spite of its short but important career. Especially in so called "free music" the use of folk music themes is advisable because of the free form and emotional input. (Note: the freed state of folk music players; they are not so particular about the form and metronome like tempo - good, speed and spirit makes the music.) Nunnu Big Band:
