Предполагаемая причина смерти – передозировка наркотиков. В качестве продюсера, звукоинженера и автора ремиксов он сотрудничал со звездами калибра Брайана Адамса (Brian Adams), Metallica и Роба Хэлфорда (Rob Halford) из Judas Priest, но более всего был известен как активный деятель экспериментальной сцены Ванкувера, сконцентрированной вокруг участников индастриал-коллектива Skinny Puppy. В Skinny Puppy Вестерна (на тот момент – начинающего, но крайне талантливого музыканта, одинаково хорошо владеющего ударными и электроникой) в начале девяностых привел Дуэйн Гёттель (Dwayne Goettel), с подачи которого Фил поучаствовал в записи альбома "The Process". Тогда же вместе с Гёттелем и другим участником Spinny Puppy Кевином Кромптоном (Kevin Crompton) aka cEvin Key Фил основал проект Download, ставший самым известным в его карьере. Download начинали с тёмной экспериментальной электроники в духе Coil, но после смерти Гёттеля (он умер от передозировки героина, едва дожив до тридцати) и во многом под влиянием Вестерна стали двигаться в сторону эмбиента и интеллигентного техно. Наиболее явно вклад Фила слышен на альбомах "III" (1997) (возможно, лучшей записи Download всех времен) и "Effector" (2000). Примерно с середины девяностых и вплоть до самой смерти Фил выпускал огромное количество музыки сольно (как под своим именем, так и под псевдонимами Kone, XMT, Stellar Sofa) и вместе с другими артистами (Download, Plateau, Frozen Rabbit, Flashpoint и др.). По отношению к электронному мейнстриму он шел как бы по касательной. Эмбиент, эйсид, дип-хаус, техно, IDM – всё это в его музыке было, но ни один жанровый тэг не описывал его звучание в полной мере. Куда более емким определением для его сочинений был бы термин "электронная психоделия". Впрочем, один раз Фил всё же мелькнул в европейском техно-пантеоне: пластинка "Everest" одного из его проектов Off And Gone вышла на немецком лейбле Harthouse, где заправлял Свен Фэт (Sven Vath). Фил Вестерн поддерживал развитие стриминговых сервисов и площадок для издания музыки в интернете, и в последние несколько лет опубликовал огромное количество записей, старых и новых, которые доступны, например, на его bandcamp-странице. Классические альбомы Download были не так давно переизданы на виниле, а новый диск проекта готовился к выходу в марте 2019-го. Those copies seem to have all disappeared, but I still had the files on an old hard drive, and people had asked me over the years to release this music. It is a little embarrassing for me now to listen to it, but there are also things I can enjoy when listening to it because it almost feels like listening to the music of someone else. If nothing else, it is another little milestone, in terms of the first use of live instruments, and it deserves to be documented as such"

Acid bass forms the substratum of this multi-layered and nefarious confection. Kaleidoscopic richness on the vox give this track a transgendered nature that exemplifies the deviant and experimental nature of this artist's work. Vibration and resonance take center stage from the get-go with a booming sub that undulates with intensity. No nonsense drum programming is layered with distorted and diced vocal samples to create a pumping break that hits like nitrous oxide, taking the track to the next level of throb. Additional sample work provides an unsettling sense of depth filled by metallic jangles, disturbed whispers, and heavy breathing. With his footprint on close to forty albums and EPs releases to date, including nine solo albums, Phil has certainly earned the title of 'prolific', considering the body of work on his Bandcamp page (philwestern.bandcamp.com). Phil has built a reputation for a complex approach to rhythm and programming with a sense of melody bound together by a deeply psychedelic instinct. The release leads with 'Ghost In Your Bed' which exemplifies Phil's trademark of intricate, interweaving synth melodies. The highly charged rhythm creates a breathing pulse as various lead lines take to the fore while others seamlessly fall into the background. It's like the soundtrack to futuristic mass transit; always moving, always forward. The other original track on the release, 'Boobs,' is characterized by a throbbing techno bass line and ring modulated synth patterns. Layers of sound summon the dance floor into its spell as whispered, drawn out voices and swirling melodies permeate the sound-sphere. A trio of remixes do a terrific job at drawing out hidden elements from Phil Western's originals. Tomas Jirku (Force Inc, basic_sounds) creates the first of a pair of interpretations of 'Ghost In Your Bed' with an energized techno treatment that takes the layered electronics and adds a raw, almost dirty quality. Innerflight artist Spon.10.80 minimizes things just a bit, with a steady bass-and-drum rhythm anchoring a building swell of sonic electricity. Finally, Seattle's Hansen (one half of Jacob London) delivers an evocative rework of 'Boobs' that stalks at a half-time step while Vangelis-like pads and textures wash over the dance floor in a mesmerizing fashion. I ended up buying some guitar pedals and an 8 track cassette recorder and decided to fill up one side of a cassette. Spybey then added words and the tracks developed into ‘composed’ songs. They are schooled by German music of the 70’s, the ‘experimental fringes’ of rock music and fuelled by a post punk DIY ethic that says, ‘anything goes.’ Oh Noh Me captures the essence of Brood and it manages the extremes of their self-titled debut.
