From the offset “Eyes Wide Open” takes us on an glorious orchestral, slightly jazzy direction. Think Pat Metheny Group meets David Axelrod with a modern electronic twist. The horns, brass, strings and synths play off each other to create beautiful soundscapes. “The Journey”, showing the funkier side of Suite Shop, flirts with chorale music at its peak. The aptly titled “Quiet Hero” does exactly what it says on the tin: gorgeous tranquility which then builds in booth mood and intensity climaxing in electronic orchestral heaven, definitely one for festivals, sunsets and rises, epic moments personified. And then we confidently exit the Suite Shop “Never In Doubt” and roll the credits. Writer, Colin Baldry, is not short of Genius ! Here & Now Recordings are proud to present the companion release to Ambient Jazz Ensemble's debut album in the shape of 'Suite Shop Reworks : Electronica, Deep House & Disco' a 15 track collection of upbeat, dancefloor and electronic versions of the chilled orchestral originals. In his impressive career composer and producer Colin Baldry (Ambient Jazz Ensemble) has worked with Motown, Warner Chappell & Capitol Records and written music for worldwide hit film Filth (written by Irvine Welsh, starring James McAvoy). For the original 'Suite Shop' album Baldry was joined by Neil Cowley (Adele, Brand New Heavies) on keys, Finn Peters (Chick Corea) on sax, Dominic Glover (Paloma Faith) trumpet, Nichol Thomson (Jamie Cullum) trombone, Tom Kane horns, Ben Reynolds drums and a string quartet. Much of the reworks album was mixed by George Shilling, whose credits include Blur, Mike Oldfield, Steve Winwood, Ocean Colour Scene and Texas. Jon Hopkins, Jamie T and FKA Twigs’ mastering engineer Guy Davie repeats his fantastic work on Suite Shop Reworks as he did on the original using his gorgeous early 70s EMI Lagos desk which no doubt many Fela Kuti recording were brought to life on. With access to working with world-class orchestras, he has been able to create large-scale epic arrangements, which has no doubt furthered his talent for emotive, cinematic compositions. For example, his previous release ‘Breathe It In’, inspired by the film 'Into The Wild' was based on the true story of Christopher McCandless and his quest to live life off the grid. Often described as ‘storytelling', Baldry himself regards AJE’s musical output as the painting of a scene not unlike the role of a film score. With the new record, ‘Aura’ unfolds on a track by track basis rather than as an album concept, where the pieces individually grow as stories do. “The individual tracks generally depict personal thoughts and experiences,” he says. “The title track ‘Aura' was the first fully formed demo in late 2017, I think it’s one of the best pieces I've ever written. It therefore set a template for the rest of the album in terms of approach, instrumentation and vibe, and set the bar with its intensity and optimism.” Although Ambient Jazz Ensemble’s brand of cinematic jazz perhaps lies somewhere between nu-jazz & ambient electronica, the live ensemble sound retains an experimental approach as a melting pot, and so continues to be on the fringes of several musical styles championed by the likes of Hospital Records and Cafe Del Mar. He himself has released music on many labels including Planet E, R&S, Versatile and Mo Wax. Kirk Degiorgio also founded The Beauty Room, an epic production inspired by such greats as Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell and Charles Stepney. Their second long player has just been released by Far Out Recordings. Simbad: Multi-instrumentalist, DJ and producer Simbad is very well respected amongst his peers in the world of good music. His incredible range as a producer spans from big band jazz to heavy Jamaican dancehall reggae, bouncy hip-hop, to sick broken-beat & techno. The Initial motif depicts the jolt of memory & the track expands as the mind endulges in the pictured scene; 'bathed in light, carved in white, caught in flight, framed in time'. My Final Scene A dense, ultimately euphoric, soundscape featuring piano & strings. The track 'Quiet Hero' (from the 'Suite Shop' album) was written just after my Dad passed away, & after he was described as such at his funeral. My Final Scene is, I suppose, the equivalent track on this album, indulgent & intense, it portrays the squeezing of every last drop from life & in everything we do.
