Originally considered part of the first wave of North American idm (intelligent dance music, ie. post-AFX / Autechre), Suction Records has slowly but surely established itself as an anomaly in the electronic music underground. Suction Records clearly represents a distinct musical and visual esthetic that is bold yet fuzzy, confrontational yet playful, robot yet human. The label remained inactive from 2003 to 2007 and was declared "officially dead" in late December 2007. In 2010 they relaunched. Currently run by Solvent (Jason Amm) and David Borean.

And typically, that's the last of it, the instrument disappearing into some rich collector's display case, never to be heard from again. Here then, is a bit of a different story. In April 2006, a Yamaha CS5 monosynth, having been owned by Richard D James (Aphex Twin), with the actual liner notes for his landmark "Selected Ambient Works Volume II" etched into the bottom, was sold at VEMIA auction for approximately $1200 - a bargain in retrospect. The winning bidder was, in fact, a friend of Solvent's, and the synth resides not in a display case, but in Solvent's studio, on generous long-term loan. "RDJCS5", a new 4-track 12-inch / digital EP by Solvent, is the result. This is Suction022. Each and every sound on this record came from RDJ's old CS5, painstakingly programmed and multi-tracked by Solvent over the course of several months. The limited capabilities and sound palette of this humble little synth provided quite a challenge, but ultimately the results are not merely an exercise in technical synthnerdery; "RDJCS5" speaks more of Solvent's musical kinship to thee Analord. Opening track "Curtains" bears similarity to early Rephlex signing Bochum Welt, while "Radiator", "Mould", and "Tassels" each contain hallmarks of the classic AFX sound. At the same time, each track also sounds distinctly and unmistakably 'Solvent'. The 12" vinyl edition is limited to 300 copies, in brown chipboard sleeve with sticker, and also contains an additional noise/drone piece at the end of side B. Entitled "Sandpaper", this cut will be individually hand-etched by Solvent, for a 1-of-a-kind cut/click/loop experience.

Lowfish is Gregory De Rocher, and this is suction023. Barring last year's "Memories..." album, a compilation of vintage archive recordings, this double-A-side 7" is actually the first new Lowfish release since 2008. While his last 2 albums could best be described as serene and clinical, electro at it's most austere, Lowfish's return to Suction Records, the label he co-runs with Solvent, also marks a return to a more melancholic electropop sound. This is not new territory for De Rocher, but it's been a while since we've heard this kind of direct, fragile emotion from Lowfish. In fact, with their slow, head-knodding 808 beats and wistful synthesizer melodies, these songs could best be described as electro-ballads. "A Little Thing Gets By" is almost cute, until the strings fade in - pure heartbreak. "Hello Tinnitus" meanwhile, is the most pure slice of synthpop that Lowfish has delivered since 2002's "Theme to Parked Cars", a firm Lowfish fave for many. While Kraftwerk remains the pivotal electro music reference, only a few electro artists can rival the masters' keen sense of melody and emotional depth — Lowfish is one of those rare electro artists, and this 7" makes that case clear.

Before Sleeparchive, there was Skanfrom… Skanfrom first appeared in the late-90s, releasing limited edition 7"s on his own A.D.S.R. label, part of a small movement of DIY labels influenced by the melodic, experimental electronica output of labels like Rephlex, Skam, and Warp. Skanfrom's music displayed a particular affinity for the lush, melodic electro of Bochum Welt, an early signing to Aphex Twin's Rephlex label; you could practically call Bochum Welt the blueprint for Skanfrom's sound. But there was something a little different about Skanfrom… Unlike Bochum Welt, who claimed influence from big shiny '80s producers like Trevor Horn and Thomas Dolby, Skanfrom was also listening to a lot of raw synthwave music - the influence of early Depeche Mode (Speak and Spell), Kraftwerk (Radioactivity), and obscure bands like Vice Versa and Ceramic Hello, clearly set Skanfrom apart from his IDM contemporaries. Skanfrom found a likeminded home in Suction Records, who were releasing records by Solvent and Lowfish with many of the same musical references. In 2002, Skanfrom released his debut album on Suction Records, "Hand Picked Fragments." A lot has changed since 2002, but in Skanfrom world, 2014 is very much the same. "Postcards" is full of the same pure and melodic electro(pop) that made Skanfrom so special to us from the start. As it was in the beginning, Skanfrom produced "Postcards" using little more than his beloved Roland SH-101; this classic vintage monosynth, with it's minimal layout and pure analogue tone, remains the ideal instrument for Skanfrom's enduring, synthetic sound. released October 7, 2014

June is the solo project of Tsampikos Fronas, originally from Greece, and now based in Berlin, Germany. June caught Suction Records' attention with the 2013 EP, "Golden Era," a sublime selection of intricate, instrumental synthesizer music made with classic analog machines, at times reminiscent of artists such as Legowelt, Solvent and Perspects. June has also been making waves with another side to his hardware analog sound, with much of his output falling firmly into the classic Chicago acid realm. 2014 saw June turning many new heads with "The Human Target," an EP divided evenly between June's synthwave and acid tracks, catching the attention of prominent DJs like Helena Hauff, Intergalactic Gary and Traxx. "Dominion" is focused on June's synthwave sound, utilizing hardware step sequencers to sync and control his arsenal of classic drum machines and synthesizers including Roland's SH-101, TR-606 and Juno-60, and *the* minimal synth percussion staple, the Korg KR-55. The romanticism and elegance of early '80s synth pop is clearly evident, not only in the production and instrumentation of the music, but in the artwork and song titles. Even more prominent is the influence of modern minimal synth master Sean McBride of Martial Canterel and Xeno & Oaklander, who's sophisticated classicist sequencer composition looms largely over the material on "Dominion," minus McBride's distinctive vocals. Save for the gorgeous and meditative "Queen Of Flowers" cuts that end both sides of the LP, the music on "Dominion" is driving, danceable synthwave that references the past while maintaining a thoroughly modern edge. released February 3, 2015

Hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, Celldöd's output to date has been a series of extremely limited cassettes. This 12-inch is a selection of tracks from the first two tapes, Pulsdisco#1 and Pulsdisco#2. Celldöd is the solo project of Anders Karlsson, well known in the EBM scene for his involvement in the band The Pain Machinery and as a live member of Severe Illusion. It's no surprise then, that the Electronic Body Music pulse of bands like DAF, Nitzer Ebb and The Klinik is at the heart of Celldöd's sound as well, but with a twist. Celldöd strips EBM down to it's core, eliminating vocals and any superfluous details. Celldöd offers a raw, minimal, and purist vision of EBM; hardware tracks recorded live to tape using just a handful of machines. Celldöd's bare bones dance cuts are dirty and primitive, but manage to steer clear of retro trappings, sounding fresh and contemporary. Despite being driven by Nitzer Ebb-style basslines and militant electronic percussion, you can also hear the squelch and funk of vintage acid house and proto-techno in Celldöd, giving Pulsdisco the same techno/EBM crossover appeal of artists such as Silent Servant, Adam X and Terrence Fixmer. released February 3, 2015

There are many young techno producers discovering the power, and finding influence, in the raw and bleak electronic sounds of early industrial and EBM music, from Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle, to Nitzer Ebb and Front 242, but few who sound as perfectly authentic as Celldöd. Indeed, Celldöd’s Anders Karlsson is not a young techno producer, but a seasoned EBM musician and fanatic, a member of bands including The Pain Machinery and Bunkersex. “Mekaniskt Gränsland” (translation: Mechanical Twilight) is dirty, electronic dance floor music, hardware driven, mostly instrumental, and stripped to the bare bone. The album was made during long, late-night sessions, working with semi-functioning gear from the past (analogue synths and drum machines, cassette decks, old tape delays and spring reverbs) as well as new, small and inexpensive machines. Karlsson’s modus operandi for Celldöd is to keep the grit and the rough edges in the production, submitting to the beauty and power of imperfection. The album was originally submitted as a collection of relentless, pounding EBM slammers, equal parts rigid and funky, but consistently geared to the dance floor… however, Celldöd decided to explore his ambient and experimental side as well, and the resulting interludes give “Mekaniskt Gränsland” a more ominous and storylike pace, an uncommon achievement in an album geared to the dance floor. From Celldöd: “Even though you exist in this mechanical twilight, you must try to move forward. Always. Never stand still. Just living is not enough. Do whatever it takes. If you stop you’ll drown.”

Digital Poodle formed in 1986 by vocalist/programmer Heiki Sillaste. Based in Toronto, Digital Poodle began releasing a series of cassettes and a 12” singles on their own Shadow Canada label. In 1991, Digital Poodle submitted the track “Work Terminal” to local alternative radio station CFNY, where it received heavy rotation alongside contemporary alternative hits by bands like Skinny Puppy, Front 242 and Depeche Mode. Indeed, “Work Terminal” became nothing short of a local EBM anthem, a staple in all of Toronto’s thriving alt/EBM club scene, and even crossing over into the emerging techno scene, with Digital Poodle even playing alongside Detroit’s Underground Resistance, Jeff Mills, Kenny Larkin and Joey Beltram at 1992’s The Realm Of The Techno Gods Festival. Digital Poodle’s popularity in the EBM scene spread, and their music was picked up for license on Hyperium in Germany, and Metropolis in the USA. But with the early ‘90s being the era of CDs, this banging EBM anthem, a tried and tested dance floor killer, has really never seen a proper vinyl release, until now, and is rounded out by remixes by Opal Tapes’ O/H and Ghostly’s Solvent. Funnily enough, Digital Poodle, O/H, and Solvent were all part of Toronto’s original industrial-techno crossover scene, and indeed, chances are all of them were probably together in the same room at some Digital Poodle concert, circa 1991, slam dancing to Work Terminal! The 12” is also rounded out by an impossibly rare 1991 cassette version, a much more clanging and ominous take than the original. Alongside O/H’s sludgy, furious techno version, and Solvent’s driving minimal synth reduction, “Revision! vol.1” offers a diverse set of dance floor killers for the modern industrial-techno scene.

Vol2 - Soul Crush” (suction037). Formed in 1986 by Heiki Sillaste, Digital Poodle began self-releasing experimental/EBM tapes in the late-80s, and by the early-‘90s had several releases licensed to international labels like Hyperium, Cleopatra and Ninja Tune. “Soul Crush” was an underground hit in EBM/alternative clubs around the world - particularly in Toronto, but also making an impact was Zoviet France’s Virtual Mix… This hypnotic, 13-minute psychedelic techno trip, actually a live-in-studio jam between Digital Poodle and industrial music legends :zoviet*france:, became an unlikely rave staple, spun by DJs including Sven Väth. Both mixes are featured here, alongside a killer revision by none other than Adam X, one of this legendary techno producer’s rare remix appearances. One of the few artists to credibly bridge the gap between EBM and techno, here Adam X delivers a pummelling dancefloor stormer, with Heiki’s distorted vocals taking the Adam X sound even closer than usual to a pure, vintage-EBM sound. Digital-only bonus remix comes from June Records’ Manie Sans Délire, a modern wave/EBM duo who turn in a bare-bones-minimal, vintage-electro revision with sparse synths and cutting TR-707 percussion. For bonus EBM points, the 12” was (re-)mastered by industrial music legend Eric Van Wonterghem (Absolute Body Control, The Klinik, Monolith).

Continuing with our Roland SH-101 themed artwork, RX-101’s “EP 3” (suction040) pairs the 101 with it’s acidic little brother, the infamous TB-303. There’s been a lot of renewed interest and hype surrounding the revival of acid techno in recent years, but RX-101’s acid offerings are not the slow ’n slinky variety favoured by most of today’s acid revivalists…. We like to think of “II” as an imaginary sequel to the duo’s classic 1996 debut EP on Aphex Twin’s legendary, now-defunct Rephlex Records (also reissued on Suction last year). Just like their debut EP, the material on “II” was recorded in the ‘90s using hardware synths, samplers, and FX. In fact, we’ve been holding back this special batch of melodic, chilled out techno and electronica for “Dopamine,” RX-101’s first full-length vinyl LP. Dopamine (suction047) is a cohesive body of work with clear references to Aphex Twin’s “Selected Ambient Works 85-92”, Polygon Window’s “Surfing on Sine Waves”, and Warp Records’ “Artificial Intelligence” series. For those of you new to the story, RX-101 is Dutch producer Erik Jong, who recorded hundreds of top-tier AFX/Rephlex-style tracks to cassette tape from 1997-1999, but never sent out any demos (“I didn’t think my own tracks were good enough, or feel the need to share my tracks with others. I simply wanted to make music without any pretension or specific purpose”). Suction Records discovered RX-101’s output via Erik’s Soundcloud page, which had been much discussed on Aphex Twin fan forum We Are The Music Makers, where many speculated that Erik was in fact a secret Richard D James alias. We were blown away the vast treasure trove of golden era ‘90s electronics in Erik’s archive, and began work on an ongoing campaign to release the music of RX-101. Although Erik was initially driven to electronic music production through the influence of house and techno, especially Detroit-area heavyweight labels Underground Resistance, Plus 8, and Transmat, it should be clear to anyone who listens that RX-101’s primary influence is the work of Richard D James. Intended as a demo, it caught the attention of infamous UK label Skam —but after months of fruitless phone tag with the label, it was time for Gregory De Rocher to strike out on his own. Dropping his Pest(e) moniker in favour of Lowfish, in 1997 De Rocher co-founded Suction Records with like-minded producer Jason Amm, aka Solvent. While that Test(e) tape wasn’t technically a Suction Records release, it served as the impetus for starting the label, and we’ve always referred to it as catalog # suction000. Fans of mid/late-90s Artificial Intelligence classics from Autechre, Locust, Aphex Twin, u-Ziq, and Bola will recognize those hallmark sounds here, alongside traces of formative influence from Skinny Puppy, OMD, and Tangerine Dream. Recorded live to DAT with a bedroom full of analog classics (Roland Jupiter 6, TR-808, TR-606, Arp Odyssey, Korg MS-20), a sampler, and an arsenal of cheap FX units, the melodies here are lush and addictive, with layers of warm, lo-fi-ish (get it?) grit - often intentional, sometimes just a product of the process. Although largely on the armchair techno tip, the dense drum programming also nods to the burgeoning drum and bass movement, which De Rocher was firmly (but only briefly) obsessed with. For the first time on vinyl and rightfully re-branded as a Lowfish release, we’re thrilled to have Test(e) officially join the Suction Records catalog. released July 17, 2019
