Attrition - Dead Of Night (22:48) The legendary Attrition began their musical career back in 1980. In two years time they would go on and release their masterful debut "Death House", an album that conjures the most macabre of Attrition's elements. Allegedly influenced by classic zombie films, "Death House" lends truth to that rumor by delivering forty six minutes of blackened paranoia inducing ambiance. Split into two sprawling pieces, "Death House" conjures the grim, unsettling atmospheres of such films like "The Last Man On Earth" and the original "Night of the Living Dead" and portrays them into musical form. The album is oftentimes uncomfortable to listen to, much like when you watch that scene in "Night of the Living Dead" where Judy and Tom's pickup truck explodes for the first time. The ghastly scene of watching Tom and Judy's corpses get eaten by zombies was the turning point in the film. How that scene made you feel queasy, well, Attriton do that for the entirety of "Death House". Attrition's actual musical approach is pretty minimal. They use light percussion and synthesizers to comprise their sound. The walls of synthesizer swell and bellow with agitation, twisting and morphing into all kinds of unfettered sounds while getting progressively both louder and softer. Tension is always high, as is dread and psychosis. In "The Dead of Night" you are greeted by harrowing synth effects that sound like a ambulance siren. It picks up in strength before it ominously fades away, conjuring a thought of some speeding ambulance that never quite made it to it's destination. Instead, the ambulance lies turned over on it's side, all occupants inside the vehicle lying motionless with the cracked windshield stained red and a vast, slow moving horde silently moving in to corner the tragic victims. Wind samples and bleeping computer effects are also used magnificently, with the wind providing a naturalistic sense of horror while the computer projects something more sinister. The album essentially composes the soundtrack to the perfect horror film as it has all the trademark elements of one. High-strung motion, unwavering tension and absolute conviction define this record but it comes as no surprise to me that a legendary band like Attrition would immediately come out the gate swinging with a masterpiece. The synthesizers and percussion are used to such a stunning effect on "Death House" that I highly recommend this album to everyone who can appreciate genuine, dark music. released July 7, 1982 Originally released as a cassette on Adventures in Reality in 1982. This is the Two Gods label remastered reissue. Regen magazin e - USA - 2007 Attrition delve into their archive to unearth this early experimental jam session from 1983. Considering that Attrition have always been on the cusp of the acclaim, it's rather amazing that this venerable British act continues to slog onwards. A key player in the genre who never gets proper credit, they stand nearly alone as one of the few original "industrial" cult acts that are still mercilessly active. Since their inception in 1982, their soundscapes have covered everything from folk to industrial, tribal to even ambient. Action and Reaction is a document from their formative years; culled from 1983, it is a collaboration with a long-defunct American project called Audio Letter. Unlike their cinematic two-track debut from the previous year, Action and Reaction is a collection of shorter pieces. According to the liner notes, the first half of this disc contains tracks begun by Attrition and completed by Audio Letter, and vice versa for the second half. Re-released on their Two Gods label, and re-mastered by Attrition's mastermind, Martin Bowes, the recording itself sounds surprisingly clear for its age. A noodling enigma, "Inside Outside" is an odd start that only later makes sense after digesting the whole. Guitar and its bass sibling titter, ping, and mutter confused, their puzzlement echoed by the duck-like din of dissonant trumpet and occasionally punctuated by cardboard box bongo woofs. Though still following the avant-garde path, "Talkback" is quite different; it is like a conversation between an experimental jazz saxophone and a seventies television commercial. Age-faded announcers gleefully recite monologue fractions while their sax squeals and chirps like an irate R2-D2. Beneath this argument in noise, synths putter and drum machines click, but their presence seems rather inconsequential and ignored. Closing out the first half of the disc, "The Christening" is certainly the most dynamic relic amongst the eight, mostly thanks to Sue Ann Harkey's tortured operatic melodrama, as the instrumentation once more is murky and abstract. The constructions on the second half are a little bit more consistent. Sounding like a flu-borne hallucination, "No Ending" finds Harkey's personality bisected a between deep monotone and a trilling falsetto siren as she half reads and half off-kilter trills through what sounds like medical documents. Musically, she is accompanied by the loose pluck of tin guitar, abrasive waves of synth, and slow motion ear piercing explosions of metallic noise. Harkey's confrontational presence is absent during "Critique of Leisure Consumption," where guest Deran Ug'ly resides at the microphone under the given title of "orator." Over a nausea-inducing sea of plucked guitar and hooting and bellowing tuba-like whales, Ug'ly speaks mechanical, blurred, and stilted of the "show being over." However, there is the final piece, "Bluegrass Xmas," which certainly does not resemble its title at all, a mess of hand drums, off-key woodwind noises, and cymbals. In summary, Action and Reaction is an interesting artifact, but one that is designed to sate avid Attrition collectors more than it is a tool that could be used to gather new fans. Perhaps parties who name-check artists like Nurse with Wound, early Coil, or Diamanda Galas might find these avant-garde experiments of greater interest than their later, more harmonic works, as may prove fairly interesting to someone with an ear for early experimentalism. It cements the fact that Attrition's double-decade scope is epic, and is certainly an interesting (albeit challenging) chapter in this band's lengthy career. ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Musictap.net - USA. - 2007 Martin Bowes' remastering and reissue project of his Attrition albums continues with the reissue of his debut album, The Attrition of Reason (1984). Created in a time where gothic music was more distinctive – and popular – than it is now, Attrition was the experimental side of a wider genre. Remember the success of Cure, Bauhaus, The Damned, and others of that ilk, and you'll remember how much Gothic played a part in that time. While Attrition wasn't as popular as the aforementioned bands, their impact, nevertheless, gave rise and influence to much of the industrial music popularity that sprung up later in the 80s. Martin Bowes brought sounds and elements into the construction of his songs to create a strangely satisfying and truly gothic experience and he has evolved that Attrition sound in the years that followed. In order to fully realize the Attrition sound, Bowes managed to stay outside the confines of larger labels so as to not compromise the integrity of what he wanted his audience to enjoy. A few years later, Attrition would find a suitable home in Projekt Records where, within the realm of a few years, a large collection of his Attrition music would become accessible to a US audience. Marrying gothic with late night horror film creep, The Attrition of Reason delivers, first by way of its cover and then by its music, the look and feel of a walk through a ancient house of evil. The album's opener track, “Day I Was Born,” sounds like the ghosts of the past communicating by singing in a mix of banshee backing vocals and a monotone voice, accompanied by eerie keyboards not uncommon in classic horror. But to pin the entirety of The Attrition of Reason on this board would be wrong. While the elements of horror remain throughout the album, there are songs that explore the juxtaposition of sounds to excellent effect and making for an album of note. On “You Will Remember Nothing,” there is an element of a suspenseful movie score with a consistent looping electronic track and whispering, ghostly, movie-like vocals (voiceovers?). Other songs, like the highly experimental instrumental cut “Take a Walk,” with its dance beats, and its sister, “Beast of Burden (take a walk),” also a dance track, add to the heart of this album. Added to this reissue is the 4-track EP, The Voice of God (1984). This EP's collection of songs are all danceable, sounding more like the 80s period of pop tunes that you remember. The Attrition of Reason stays true to its gothic roots and explorations of horror in its 8 tracks. That element was explored by bands like The Cure but never cut into the arm as deeply as Attrition does. With this reissue's expanded addition of the 4-song EP, The Attrition of Reason is a greater collector value. Fans should be quite happy to get this next remastered disc for their Attrition library. ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Smiling, At The Hypogonder Club review from Judas Kiss Continuing with the reissue of their back catalogue, Attrition this time take a drive back into their distant past and deliver their second proper album, 1985’s ‘Smiling, At The Hypogonder Club’. Following on from their ’84 debut ‘The Attrition Of Reason’, there’s a dramatic shift in the output of the band, with a greater emphasis on electronics and beats being utilised with a clear and precise delivery to give the album an uneasy dancefloor feel which has reverberated through their work to the present day. There are also the embryonic beginnings of the male / female vocal interplay which is a pivotal element in Attrition’s recorded output. Although coming from more experimental origins, with ‘Smiling,…’ Martin Bowes forges ahead with an interesting assemblage of synth passages, dramatic vocals and a dark undercurrent that ties the whole package together. At the time, I can imagine their sound must have been strangely leftfield whilst not sitting too comfortably within other genres of similarly styled music. It had the beats and dark dancefloor aesthetic of early Skinny Puppy, the experimental edge that tied it somewhat uncomfortably to the outskirts of the industrial scene at the time, and a dark presence that had one foot firmly planted in the gothic scene, making it still indefinable as one specific genre or another and immensely difficult to pigeonhole. Yet in only a matter of years, Attrition’s mid-80s sound would influence a whole plethora of copyists and be held in some way responsible for birthing the gothic / ethereal sound that became synonymous with the American label Projekt. With a dark poppy edge and a strangely enticing sound and atmosphere, ‘Smiling,..’ has a feel that has aged brilliantly well with time and manages to keep itself from sounding aged and of its time, which is surely a credit to the recording skills of Martin and the rest of the band. Presented with updated artwork and the inclusion of two additional tracks, a compilation appearance ‘Fusillade Part 3’ and the annoyingly catchy 12” ‘Shrinkwrap’ which is one song I have a real love / hate relationship with. However, this 12” along with ‘Smiling,..’ helped catapult Attrition into the very (darkened) heart of the European darkwave scene. Attrition were years ahead of their time as innovators of dark, stylised poppy experimental music, and ‘Smiling,..’ demonstrates with wonderful glee why their fanbase has continued to grow since the band’s inception and doesn’t look like peaking anytime soon. ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

This is the Two Gods label remastered reissue. released July 4, 1986 Review from Amazon - 2000 One of the best Attrition releases ever, taking its title, I assume, from the idea of The Afterlife from Eastern Religion (Buddhist) and the " Realm Of The Hungry Ghosts " (clever and appropriate usage of a title). From the opening, "Vigil," with its stark, electronic, post-modern edge, you are led "Into The Waves," with its Black Tape... "With My Sorrows" sort of feel (did they get the idea from Attrition for this song?), which are two of the best tracks. Next is "In Your Hand," with its rapid tempo and murky electronica, is quirky and surreal; next follows "Surge And Run," a langourous song resembling most of those found on the excellent "The Attrition Of Reason," with its fading and surging female voice, Bowe's sing-song voice, melting in, and bizarre electronic effects; the next song, "Marianne's Dream," which seems incongruous at first, but then melts into this slow dream-like song, again, it sounds like something Black Tape... would later use for their "Remnants Of a Deeper Purity," only difference being, that in Attrition's version, surrealism abounds. Besides the slow, droning, pathos of the song, there are children screaming and...chattering...in the background noise...which makes it seem even more mysterious...then this too fades away, and we're left with that very ominous yet drowing effect and feeling of the drone...for most of the time; "Dreamsleep" follows, with its dark wall of sound, vibrating like broken speakers, with chirping electronica here and there, and a void-like sound, of empty space, which continues to assault its listener, finally breaking into a female voice, which doesn't seem to compliment the austere and surreal music, but nevertheless works out; "The Last Refuge" is next, and sounds like something that could be used for the soundtrack to an Italian horror film, maybe a zombie film by Fulci, replete with a female voice and ominous whispers in the background droning away, against the electronica (here mimicking a cathedral organ, perfect touch); "The beginning of the End" follows -- dark again, refined, Gothic, surreal, resembling the works to be found in the excellent "Smiling At The Hypogonder Club." Along with the strange lyrics, which sounds mad and...well...it's Attrition , what can you say? Next follows "Questions," which starts out with birds chirping and a slow, piano introduction (resembling the work of Scriabin), with a female voice recounting surreal poetry; next comes the driving "Which Hand," with a slighly angry, or vehement female voice, contrasting against the once again bizarre "horrific" electronic effects, only to meld together in a very tasteful ariatic-like blend, tapering off into a sort of ecstaty of sounds and voices (also angelic background choir), another very excellent song. Finally, we reach "A Forgotten Dream," with its slow mournful piano, ballad-like intoduction, which continues with more strange effects, like someone blowing into empty bottles, tinny sounds, electronic refuse, glassy notes in the background, very much like a dream deferred, especially as the piano music grows in intensity. The last song "A'dam and E'va" has been featured elsewhere. It has a Gothic feel again, with pipe organ effects and ominous singing and its almost humourous lyrics ("Turning on red lights and swimming in beer fights, dancing on tables, Amsterdam..." I love Attrition , and if you like really dark Gothic music, you will too. ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Gothic Beauty- USA - 2009 This album was first released in 1988, and it still impresses without sounding dated -- one wonders what happened, when a twenty-year old album comes up freshly remastered and sounds better and more innovative than a great deal of brand-new electronic music. Not to say that it is detached from its time, but when pulses and patterns recognizable from late-eighties electronic music do surface here, they've been turned and sharpened such that they've kept their edge. If it's all new to you, too, "At the Fiftieth Gate" is a good place to catch up with Attrition, with song structures influenced by Garry Cox on guitar ("History Man"; "Two Miles Up"), contagiously affecting electronics (the title track; "Haydn," included here with versions previously available on 12"singles), and unsparing, unsettling lyrics. ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Sphere zine - UK - 2009 Originally released in 1991 this album was at the forefront of a new and exciting time for Industrial music in the UK. Its dark tones and coldwave-style beats led the way for the UK scene. ‘ A Thin Red Line ' finds itself somewhere between Skinny Puppy and Nick Cave via a trip to Numan land. Its powerful drum machine beats smash against jazz-influenced keys for a funky-yet-sadistic opener. ‘ Right Hand Man ' is a little more sinister with 8-bit-esque electronics and some classic elements working alongside the unique shared vocals from Martin Bowes and Julia Waller . ‘ Scenario ' is a thundering standout with a haunting backdrop leading perfectly into confident vocals and a powerful mix of dark-electro. ‘ First Love ' keeps the pace moving with a heavier tone that builds and builds to keep the listener hooked in. The personal nature of the song, alongside the fantastic harmonies of Waller are certainly worthy of a mention here as the tracks most enticing elements. ‘ A Girl Called Harmony ' is possibly Attrition 's most accessible track with elements of neo-classical embedded within a trad-Goth structure. Here you may actually be reminded of Maynard James Keenan 's Puscifer project in terms of the slow, methodic style. From this, you can see here the influence of Attrition 's on a range of different acts within the Goth genre nowadays. ‘ The Rising Tide ' is our favourite track, it's effortlessly dark and seductive, and it betrays the acts heavier side. ‘ Legitimate Son ' is an extroadinary blend of classical, Industrial and Goth genres. It's simply epic and will definitely be something to see if they break it out live. ‘ Hush ' relies heavily on electronics and it's a sample-based instrumental effort with a soft, almost trip-hoppy build up. This one is the soundtrack to the ultimate head-trip. At times it's totally chilled, at times it's chaotic and it perfectly showcases Attrition 's passion and skill. Follow-up ‘ Something In My Eye ' is almost pop, but it works well to get the point across. Okay... it is about as pop as a Revolting Cocks tune, but it is certainly accessible with some excellent keyboard work and well programmed beats. It's more than a little fun. The bonus songs on this re-release are fairly enjoyable, with the cyberpunk awesomeness of ‘ Your Face, My Gift ' and the electro-opera -beast that is ‘ Under The Bridge ', meeting with the soulful ‘ Resurrection (reprise) ' and a hard-hitting new mix of ‘ Something In My Eye ' to finish. To summarise, There is a unique ambience within Attrition 's work that makes them easier to listen to and take in than a lot of their contemporaries. ‘ A Tricky Business ' is still so relevant now in that it's a raw and intelligent Industrial record that will serve as a great reference point for younger bands and fans alike who want to find out more about the “originators” of the genre. ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

This is the Two Gods label remastered reissue. credits released July 3, 1993 Darklife - DE - 2011 The Hidden Agenda ranks among the highest in my personal favorites, and I'm not far from the truth if I state that this the album is the incarnation of the highest levels of Martin Bowes and Julia Waller partnership. One of the first things noticed upon spinning the disk, is the fact that there's little to nothing on it betraying its revered age. 1993 was the year the work was originally released, and I frankly cannot think of just one more example of an album that could have been released yesterday, or any day during the past 18 years and still be able to disguise its age with such ease. Martin's electronic arrangements, a combination of gritty electronic phrases, fatter than life bass lines, laid against a backdrop of atmospheric synth movements, have meanwhile become an universally celebrated manifesto of electronic avant-garde going hand in hand with a moderate gothic sensation. These are laid down at their best here, with Martin's trademark growled quasi-spoken vocal work, coupled with Julia's unique counterpoint that ranges from operatic to ethereal and much in between. Here is where über classics such as Lip Sync and Mercy Machine have found their first life. Now, if there's an album I would urge any relatively recent scenesters to go and listen to, this is Hidden Agenda. This edition also includes three tracks extra to the original, which first appeared on the Lip Sync single. The Wire magazine - UK - 1994 "...Check out the post-industrial phenomena that Martin Bowes lines up on this splendid album: consumerism (the modish, airbrushed box sleeve), new technologies (a planetful of synths and samplers) and postmodern decentring (a bewildering array of borrowed styles glimsed with disorientating speed and transitoriness). This is a seriously listenable, cutting-edge industrial masterpiece, an album that for once dares to transcend the genres narratives. sure, there's the time-honoured blurring of the known boundaries of sound, but there's something more than the usual gothic grind here - something traditional, something almost representational. The found-sound panorama Bowes creates can sometimes be almost picaresque in it's diversity - scratched mongrel-barks, looped coughs, flyaway piano, all underpinned with rock tempi and heart stopping stop-starts. "from a whisper, to a rage" the sleeve contends portentously, but with sonic polyvariance like this on show it's an apt description. "Wetenscap (dream number nine)" is a case in point - scraps of seraphic singing and timelapsed rolling tides whirlpool around a sluggish two-cylinder beat, when in wanders a plaintive synth intoning Beethoven's big "Ode to Joy" theme from the Ninth Symphony. Great stuff." ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

ATTRITION is one of the few electronic bands that has managed to avoid it's curse through the eighties and nineties without ever losing authenticity, i would even dare to say "spontaneity"! Release after release, the genius Martin Bowes brings his sound a bit further. He deepens his search for the perfect sound and probes into the numerous unexplored sonic landscapes to create something new with no reference to the various trends he went through with time. On this 3 arms and a dead cert, he gives a twist to the taste of dark techno (as they would call it in Germany) on the latest material by re-inforcing his marriage between digital and analog ingredients, shy guitars and beautiful violins. Franck Dematteis' violin parts give a totally different dimension to the electronica, plunging them into a sort of semi-classical semi-theatrical atmosphere (Predicament?, 3 arms and a dead cert, or Prelude). The instrument perfectly suits the convincing male and female vocal contrasts. Julia Wallers' voice most often underlines the dramatic side of the songs, while Martin sounds cold and strong. The lyrics are once again off the beaten track, adding another interesting feature to this rather varied album. Although globally it sounds sombre and mid-paced, there are also rhythmic songs with effective bass sequences (Acid Tongue or Demi-God). The best tracks in my opinion are White men talk, Acid Tongue or Demi God. Attrition lead us into a new world, their own world, a world where they deserve to climb higher, a world i strongly advise you to enter at least once in your short life. Competently accomplished and perfectly mastered from the first second to the last. ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Attrition - Fusillade I (8:03) released July 13, 1997 A collection of ATTRITION songs reworked for classical instrumentation in collaboration with Franck Dematteis of the Paris Opera. Originally released on Projekt records in 1997. This is the Two Gods label remastered reissue. Regen magazine. 2008 Attrition reinterprets selections from their past for strings and voice, creating a haunting collection of avant-garde classical power. Even since the beginning, Attrition has maintained a flair for combining dark electronic textures with classical arrangements, creating a unique style of darkwave that has been often imitated over the years. The 1997 release, Etude , now reissued and remastered by founder Martin Bowes on his Two Gods label, is the perfect demonstration of their classical mindset. In collaboration with Franck Dematteis, Attrition revisits a variety of their past work and rearranges them for orchestral instrumentation, albeit with a minimalist approach driven primarily by solo violins and violas. Dematteis infuses his strings with a haunting quality that truly augments the dark flavors as if to create soundtracks for a gothic stage play, reminiscent of Danny Elfman's scores for Tim Burton's films. This is particularly so on the resonant plucks and scraping harmonic solos of "Feel the Backlash" and with a backing of harpsichord arpeggios on "A Girl Called Harmony (Estranged)" coupled with longtime collaborator Julia Waller's operatic intonations. As is usually the case with Attrition, Bowes takes the backseat and plays the role of producer or even a conductor of sorts, allowing Waller and Dematteis to revel in their talents and bring the music to life. "Which Hand?" swoops in and soars with rapid fire violin solos and a droning organ to provide only the slightest bit of footing on solid ground - one can detect a sense of where Emilie Autumn may have received some of her inspiration with this track. Of course, the actual lyrics are sparse with Waller's voice acting mainly as another instrument, singing those floating and fluttering melodies. While she does occasionally go out of tune, it lends a dissonant yet harmonic quality that hardly detracts from the music, in fact enhancing it. We even get a helping of thrumming snare drums on "Fate is Smiling," adding to the already tense rising chord progression, as if to signify the approach of some unknown peril. Fans of Attrition or even those with an ear for avant-garde classical music should find much enjoyment in these interpretations of some of their best known works; while lighter on the instrumentation, they are certainly not lacking in depth and power. ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

The Jeopardy Maze - Rock Sound magazine - UK - 1999 "A violin caustically weaves it's way amongst a collection of analogue synths and organic beats on Attrition's best offering to date, an album as musically stylish as it's artwork suggests. The Jeopardy Maze is an almost perfect example of darkwave-ambient, a subtle and sinister tapestry of electro and classical elements with the occasional female gothic vocal progression strung across the top. Spine-tinglingly atmospheric but not an album to put on at parties, unless you want everyone to leave. This is a very personal listening experience, an isolation in sound and not something to be intruded on. Occasionally it displays too much of the bands industrial roots and some intrusive chanting noises, but otherwise this is essential listening. The perfect gothic antidote to the bloated fuzz of more recent triphop, The Jeopardy Maze is dark, sinister, and impeccably good." ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

This is the Two Gods label remastered reissue with 4 bonus remixes Dante's Kitchen review from Sideline magazine. 2004 Dante's Kitchen brandishes a reborn sound for Attrition, abundant with new influences and passion. Certainly, one can draw a few comparisons to the sound the fluxes throughout. The eerie opera of Die Form, the sultry rhythms of recent Massive Attack, and the alien organics of perhaps Coil. Preceded by the introductory tortured violin of "Andante", the disc plunges into the disjointed dance macabre of the title track. Martin Bowes gravel voice bristles across break beats as high-pitched female operatic pleads for divine help. "The Head of Gabriel" continues with reptilian grace; an elastic bass beat twang here summons the shimmer of ghostly ethereal vocal as the violin flutters around like a moth lost in the piece's trance. Warm warbling waves of bass carry driftwood banshees and samples through "The Long Hall", before being disrupted by a frenetic rhythm, as their chanteuse is chased by a retro horror keyboard line. "A Ladder" is a seething dub exploration that bounds through in nocturnal slow motion, while the subterranean samba of "Two Gods" is enhanced by doom-laden violin while the title repeated as a mantra. "Dreamcatcher" exhales a nightmare underneath banshee wails and nightmare-depicting dialogue samples, spilling out natural drums that somewhat slice through its claustrophobic tension. Attrition also delves back into their worlds of dark ambience. "Feed the Crow" is a grim piece haunted by the hiss and clunk of ancient steam tunnels amidst the choppy flutter of electronics and banshee sighs. Finally, the closing "Still Life?" glistens with ambient textures and the birdcall of flutes before being drenched in a field recording of a foreboding storm. Overall, I find Dante's Kitchen is balanced precisely between ominous soundtracks and the vivid thrum of fetish-istic techno. Enthralling as well as eerie, it might be their best effort to date. ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Mary Ann Cotton was born October 1832 in County Durham , Northern England . Possibly the greatest female mass murderer Britain has ever known, she left a trail of death throughout her life, killing between 16 to 21 of her children and former husbands over many years by arsenic poisoning . She was eventually arrested, tried and hanged in Durham Jail on the 24th March 1873. The Police officer that arrested Mary Ann Cotton was a Sergeant Tom McCutcheon. Coincidentally, his daughter, Louisa McCutcheon, had worked for a while for Mary as a seamstress.. On departing for Durham jail Mary gave Louisa her prized sewing box as the only way she could now pay her for her work… The sewing box was kept in Louisa's family and passed down through the generations. Rather uneasily considering what it represented… My own father met a by then very old Louisa when he was a young child in the 1940's - He recently recounted this story and passed on the box on to me. Louisa McCutcheon was my great great great aunt…. Martin Bowes. 2007 released July 18, 2008 Originally released on Projekt records in 2008. This is the revised second edition. Attrition - All mine enemys whispers - review from Key 64 There are tones and ranges of sound that can channel emotional response directly into one's consciousness... Rhythmic entrainment and psychoacoustics are capable of eliciting specific emotional responses and constructing narrative experience. Few musicians are able to construct tracks in such a way as to accomplish this feat successfully, and fewer still are able to sustain such an experience across an entire album. Attrition is certainly one of those few.. this is easily the most unsettling album I've heard in years, as deeply disturbing as anything I've come across in any piece of media. The album's six tracks are spaces against which the mind unfolds the full tale of Mary Ann Cotton, a soundtrack conjuring her essence. If any sequence of music has a chance of evoking a specific entity, this is the one. It begins with an evokation, the children's rhyme that opens the very first track "Mary Ann Cotton, She's dead and she's rotten She lies in her bed, With her eyes wide open Sing, sing, oh, what can I sing, Mary Ann Cotton is tied up with string Where, where? Up in the air Sellin' black puddens a penny a pair." Legend has it that When the walls are thin between the world of the living and the dead on Halloween, reciting this rhyme over her grave was enough to call the spirits of those she'd killed to audible experience. Whispers of long dead children are heard, bemoaning their painful deaths at her hands. In those days, arsenic was often used for murder but few were as prolific, or as reviled, as Britain's Mass Murderess Mary Ann Cotton by the time she was publicly executed. (One particularly interesting bit of trivia, newspapers had deliberately coarsened Mary Ann's features in what is likely the earliest incidents of airbrushing.) At first listen this may seem like a soundtrack to a horror film, but this album is much more intentional and holds up to repeated listening in ways a soundtrack never could, subservient as they generally are to the director's vision--rather, this is a evocation of the essence of Mary Ann Cotton's story, linked by way of the sewing box she once held in her hand. Martin Bowes great great great aunt Louisa McCutheon, a seamstress, recieved as payment from Mary Ann Cotton a sewing box, prior to her incarceration and subsequent public execution in March of 1873. This same sewing box can now be heard on track five, 'played' by Martin Bowes to provide texture to one of the most moving tracks on the cd. The first track, "What shall i sing?" is available for download via Attrition's website , and provides a stunning introduction to this piece of work, but my favorite track is easily the fifth. A chilling piece entitled "The Gates of Eternity" split into two sections, i. A short Drop and ii. Rock of Ages , an incredible ten and a half minute track that sumons Cotton's public execution to the mind's eye while conjuring wind and ghosts through Bowes' soundscaping and Erica Mulkey's complex cello arrangement of Mary Ann Cotton's self-professed favorite hymnal. Emilie Autumn's vocals on ii.Rock of Ages manage to be both purifying and lost, a melodic anchor that fleshes out the mental construct the entire album creates. The album comes to a close with the sixth track, "Heaven is my home or the other side of Jordan..." an auditory experience of the veils of space and time ripping apart to reveal some glorious afterlife and the deep fabric of souls wailing in harmonics outside of human hearing. This is an album you feel as much as hear, an album of dark ambient neoclassical compositions constructed both acoustically and electronically by a master of the craft. ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

This is the Attrition I know and love, the one which does disturbingly experimental work. You know, the albums which don’t get the rave reviews or have heavy rotation in the clubs. No, what they’ve done with Invocation can proudly join the ranks of the sublime releases This Death House, Something Stirs and Esoterica. It’s no accident this was released 30 years after their debut I’m certain, and it’s no coincidence that Martin Bowes does these sorts of outings sporadically. In the world of this Coventry institution there are no accidental observations… never does the smoke rise without purpose. I’d call this Incidental Musics IV if it hadn’t already been titled. An ongoing circular inspection of the mind, an inquisitive foray into the regions most would give anything not to have or acknowledge. Here is where this group excel; in the sphere of music telling the tales the eyes can only behold when closed, Attrition are king. There is an oft-repeated phrase which defines Invocation to a tee: no one who is evil believes they are. They act for the good of those around them, they do what must be done. The end always justifies the means and to that end we have this work to drink in gratefully. Tell me the last time a record made your skin crawl like this, the walls closing in all around, and even if you could break the spell you wouldn’t dare. Attrition chronicle the purity and unadulterated bliss those who suffer a psychotic break must feel. I have not seen the movie this serves as a score to, but based upon what I’m hearing I don’t suspect it has a happy ending. No sunshine on the face in fields of lilies as the woman you love walks quietly beside you out of the underworld. Orpheus with his empty hand standing in the spring as the vines grow over where she lies imprisoned, the bittersweet melancholy of this album is perhaps what gives it the incredible range it possesses. Much like a caramel you slowly dissolve in your mouth, everything is coated in a thick layer of cloying constitution. The taste of all these things coalesces to form the sticky web one cannot get rid of. Again and again Attrition demonstrate how ambient is more than just a mood or setting on one’s emotional thermometer. In their skilled hands it transcends mere background and permeates the surroundings to become ambiance. The brooding, temperamental nature of Invocation is not going to be what people remember them for – they have a newer, more accessible album for that – but when they do decide that the time has come to retire, it is material such as this which their fans will come back to and re-discover. No catchy melodies, no driving beats and no sinewy bass lines but rather the defragmentation of the psyche. A dismantling of perceptions. In this realm where the skies are perpetually shrouded in unending twilight and crawling shadows, an Attrition is indeed going on. But it is more to do with the literal meaning of the word than what sound can convey. Bowes work of this nature is some of the most disturbing you will hear and that his wife Kerri joined him on this excursion into boundless midnight clearly demonstrates what can be accomplished when the fates align. Here’s to more, you two. Many many more. ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Founder Martin Bowes has teamed up with US singer Tylean on vocals and created 10 new works varying in style from industrial to gothic to dark ambient soundscapes, whilst lyrically continuing his exploration of introspective themes of life, love and death... With a host of special guest appearances: Mona Mur (Einsturzende Neubauten, En Esch etc), Matt Howden (Seiben etc), Annie Hogan (Marc and the Mambas, Nick Cave etc) Erica Mulkey (Unwoman) Ian Arkely (My Silent Wake, Seventh Angel) Jyri Glynn, Joanna Dalin and more.. released April 1, 2013 Music and lyrics: Martin Bowes Recorded, mixed and mastered by Martin at the Cage studios, Coventry, England. 2009 - 2012 Photography by Holger Karas Cover model: Jezebel Attrition: 'The Unraveller of Angels' – Fearnet.com Just last month, UK musician Martin Bowes gave us a taste of the latest offering from his legendary gothic/industrial music project Attrition, in the form of the digital EP Narcissist (check it out here), which represents the band in a more intense, heavy beat-driven mode while still maintaining the hypnotic ambient soundscapes that Bowes brings to the game. Ever since hearing him describe the band's new stylistic direction in an earlier interview, I've been anxious to hear the entirety of The Unraveller of Angels, the band's highly-anticipated sixteenth studio album. The roster of guest artists on this record is impressive enough – Tylean, Mona Mur, Matt Howden, Ian Arkley, Jyri Glynn and Erica Mulkey are among the contributors – and many musical genres are represented, from straight-up electro to neoclassical to dark ambient noise. That said, Unraveller is still pure Attrition: dark, mysterious and sexy at any speed. The seriously creepy intro “The Unraveller” sets the beautiful but nightmarish tone with its icy piano sprinkled over distorted, contorted vocal samples before launching us into the bumping drum & bass and synth surges of “Karma Mechanic,” with Bowes trading vocal lines with gothic legend Mona Mur. “Narcissist,” which we've covered previously in its many EP variations, appears in its twitchiest, most urgent version here. Eerie cello, piano and violin twist through “Histrionic!” with distortion effects often transforming the string instruments and ambient female vocals into musical wraiths. String instruments also play a dominant role in “One Horse Rider,” turning a minimal beat pattern into a dance of doom, and a pensive cello blends with snarling guitar licks in “Snakepit.” In a cool twist on the pattern, Jyri Glynn's effects-heavy electric violin weaves a flute-like tone (reminiscent of Vangelis's iconic Blade Runner theme) through mid-tempo synth rhythms and deep guitar chugs in “Suicide Engineer”... The full compliment of strings and piano comes to bear in “The Causal Agent,” joined by a deep, heartbeat-like synth bass pulse, resulting in the album's most haunting and memorable track. It's not as club-friendly as the others, but to my ears it represents Attrition's essence perfectly. It also prepares you for the thirteen-minute epic “Hollow Latitudes,” described as “a story in three parts” which stitches the themes of all the other tracks into one. It drifts from a gothic/neoclassical opening to experimental noise, peaking with a low, wailing guitar and thick layers of reverb applied to acoustic and electric violins. The record ends as it began, with bone-chilling instrumental beauty – in the form of “The Internal Narrator.” Soaring synths, guitar and piano are confronted by nightmarish organic and metallic noise elements, bringing the tone of Unraveller full circle to the cinematic style of the band's horror soundtrack album Invocation, or their earlier concept album All Mine Enemys Whispers... both of which I highly recommend to fans of more experimental horror music. Martin was right about The Unraveller of Angels marking a new phase in the band's timeline, and that phase brings new urgency and tension to their already dangerous sound. But even within the more straightforward dance tracks there's a kind of wonderful chaos at work, pushing classical and electronic instruments and human voices out of the comfort zone and into strange new patterns... but it all comes together thanks to Bowes' moody talk-sung vocals which create an otherworldly narrative, guiding you down the many dark hallways that this artist knows so well. Attrition will begin their next world tour this month, criss-crossing Europe in the spring and summer and touring the west US coast this fall (dates and venues are being updated regularly at the band's official site), and Martin is currently working with filmmaker Daniel Gouyette on a series of music videos – a rare occurrence for this band – as well as a documentary on the making of the album. So expect to hear and see more from them soon... ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Attrition - Surge And Run (7:39) Originally released in 1985 on Ding Dong Discs as the ATTRITION side of a joint live cassette document of the 1984 tour with the Legendary Pink Dots. This version with 2 extra tracks taken from a 1984 live recording from Arnhem holland for Dutch radio VPRO. Remastered for Two Gods. released July 24, 1985 Across the Divide - Gothtronic review Attrition had a fond relation with the Netherlands since the band's early years. The first foreign performance of Attrition took place in the Dutch town of Arnhem on the 29th of march 1984. That concert was part of a joint Dutch/Swiss tour together with The Legendary Pink Dots during the spring of that year. The tracks on Across The Divide were part of a cassette-only live album called The Terminal Kaleidoscope which featured The Legendary Pink Dots on side A and Attrition on side B. It was issued by the Dutch experimental label Ding Dong Records And Tapes, totalling one thousand copies. These rare recordings show Attrition in its early incarnation, with Ashley Niblock on keyboards. For this re-issue the original track sequencing was altered as it contains two songs that weren't part of The Terminal Kaleidoscope cassette: "Pendulum turns" and "The outer edge". They were recorded by VPRO radio on the 22nd of july 1984 at the venue Korenmarkt in Arnhem. "Pendulum turns" would appear as the b-side to the single Shrinkwrap in 1985. This live version has a long, grey, desolate synth intro that makes it all the more intriguing. The urgent rhythms are a vital part of this composition while Martin growls and Julia Waller throws in here forceful, operatic voice. "The outer edge" with its restless yet dragging cadence was part of the Voice Of God EP, here presented live in its entirety. Minimal, dark synth melodies with a strong percussive accompaniment and free-form vocals is the best way to describe the sound of Attrition in 1984. It ain't synthpop as it lacks the smoothness that is a typical part of that genre, it has more to do with an initial manifestation of industrial: a blend of avant-garde electronic experiments. On the long, post-punk soundscapes of "Surge and run" Legendary Pink Dot Pat Paganini takes care of the percussion. Compared to the studio versions the renditions on these recordings sound bit sharper, especially on "Across the divide". It is surprising how intense the intricate style of Attrition emerged on stage. Across The Divide (Live in Holland) is a most interesting document of Attrition's formative years. ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Attrition - A Girl Called Harmony (6:23) released July 27, 2000 Live from the 1999 Jeopardy Maze US tour and originally released in 2000 on Trisol in Europe. This is the Two Gods label remastered reissue. Review from Legends magazine. USA. 2000 Opening with the melancholic viola from Prelude, Attrition quickly shifts gears into the live version of Acid Tongue. The song's viola intro segues well and alludes to Attrition's well thought out live performances. This is the first chance many fans have to hear Attrition's new vocalist. Julia Waller has meandered off, to be replaced with Christine Reid. It's a change. It's not the same band. Julia's disaffected, angelic voice has been replaced with a sultry street smart wail and whisper. The live version of Acid Tongue seems more straight ahead, more electro. I was thinking the majority of the live versions would lend themselves to the same treatment, but Atomizer actually sounds remarkably similar to the album version. The Second Hand actually sounds much different. Slower, perhaps, and we finally get to hear Christine really color a song. Her wails lend the song more despair, while on I Am she sounds more stately. In a couple of places, the updated performances add intriguing new touches to Attrition's music. Their classic, Lip Sync, sounds like it could have come off of their last album, The Jeopardy Maze. The Mercy Machine invokes the same effect. Maybe he's using a new keyboard? Attrition encore with their all-time favorite track, A Girl Called Harmony... Overall, a valuable record of Attrition's live sound. . ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Attrition - November 18th. 2006 (2:03) released July 19, 2009 Live recordings from the 25 year anniversary tour of Europe, the USA and Mexico over 2006 - 2007. Originally released in 2009 on Projekt records in the USA and Two Gods for the rest of the world. Kill the Buddha! review from fearnet.com Last year I introduced some of you open-minded souls out there to the work of amazing electronic group Attrition – the twisted creation of UK artist Martin Bowes – whose acclaimed album All Mine Enemys Whispers was one of the most chilling and immersive sonic experiments of that or any year. Now it's time for an entirely new experience, as Attrition has released their new 25th Anniversary live CD – which represents the band's impressive history and hints at new, even more sinister directions in the years to come. Recorded during the band's 2006-2007 “Tearing Arms From Deities” world tour – which included stops throughout Europe and North America – the nine performances captured on Kill the Buddha! feature a few of the band's earlier works (as a sort of precursor to the Gothic/Darkwave movement, before anyone knew what to call it), but is built primarily of cuts from their more recent release Dante's Kitchen . The tracks were all culled directly from each show's live sound mix, recorded on mini-disk and remastered by Bowes himself. The result is a completely new spin on the band's immersive sonic landscapes, with an injection of immediate energy and spontaneity, fury and beauty, that feels almost monolithic in scope while managing to steer clear of the self-indulgent tendencies than can dog so many bands of the Gothic variety. For this tour, Bowes shares onstage vocal duties with operatic American singer Laurie Reade, and turns over most of the offbeat electronic instrumentation (his own forte in the studio) to several other keyboardists, including frequent Attrition collaborator Ned Kirby (of the band Stromkern). The result is a layered, haunting, hypnotic collection of genre-defying soundscapes that alternately seduce and frighten. “Favourite Things” sets the mood with creeping, crawling electronic drones accompanying a spoken tally of the contents on a mad scientist's workbench (“Sulfuric Acid... Sodium Cyanide... rubber gloves... a gurney... restraint gear...”) and gives way to the throbbing analog beat that begins “The Head of Gabriel,” the first in a cluster of Dante's Kitchen tracks and a solid example of the band's latter-day output. Bowes' guttural whisper holds down the low frequencies while Reade's angelic intonations soar, loop and reverberate across the sound field, while the entire mix is punctuated by knob-twiddling synth effects and sprinklings of samples. It's followed by the title track from the same album, a more drum 'n' bass infused version of a similar formula. “Dreamcatcher” adds to the sultry danger with its lurching, Middle Eastern electro-bass rhythm and a cool repetitive spoken line from Bowes. Next up are two songs from 1997's Etude: “A'dam & Eva” is filled with dark carnival atmosphere, thanks to its waltz-time organ accompaniment to Reade's lyrical material – this time Bowes switches to the background to provide eerie demonic accents. “I Am Eternity” is essentially a shoegazing trip-hop number – albeit with more evil intensity than, say, Portishead – and features a seriously catchy keyboard arpeggio line. Then it's ahead to Dante again with “Two Gods,” propelled mainly by Bowes' dark murmurings and a groaning bass line, surrounded by a swarm of electronic insect buzzing. “The Mercy Machine” (from The Hidden Agenda ) is a more hard-driving and dance-friendly piece, with deep, bouncy bass, more pronounced percussion and a dreamy, melancholy vocal quality that demonstrates just how much influence Bowes has lent to the whole Darkwave thing. “The Long Hall” is another up-tempo piece with a jungle-esque rhythm loop, which builds momentum to a point, plateaus in trance mode for a while, then kicks in more frenetic beats to an orgasmic, breathless climax. For a fun closer, “November 18, 2006” is taken from a live tribute to Martin, with Reade crooning a very sultry “Happy Birthday,” but the whole event is turned slightly creepy by a deep synth drone in the background. Think of it as a sexy alien party for the damned... and now that I think of it, that's a perfect description of the Attrition experience. Though not for all tastes, Attrition has managed to secure a solid niche audience for a quarter-century, all the while resisting categorization despite recognizable elements of early industrial, dark ambient and trance. Come to think of it, Martin Bowes has probably influenced most, if not all, of those genres himself. There's a damn good reason why this group is still around, and this CD is a cool way to find out. ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Originally released on Other Voices records. The truth in dark corners - Chain DLK review "The Truth In Dark Corners" is a recording of live tracks coming from the band's 1985 Holland tour plus a closing track coming from a London gig. Back then Attrition were releasing their second album "Smiling, At The Hypogonder Club" on Third Mind and this release contains many tracks coming from that one plus "Shrinkwrap" (which was a single) and two unreleased tracks "In The Attic" and "The Aftermath". Formed on those days by Martin Bowes, Marianne Teunissen and Alex Novak, the band was creating their distinctive darkwave electronic sound which was capable to mix danceable rhythms and electronic experimental attitude. "The Truth In Dark Corners" contains good recordings of classic Attrition's tracks (or at least they are what I consider their classics) like "Mind Drop" or "Pendulum Turns" and here you can listen them sounding direct and powerful. These recordings represent quite well the essence of the band on those days so I don't consider this album only a release for hard core fans. And sleeve notes you'll find by Justin Mitchell back then. I'm quite sure that if you a long time reader of our magazine you know this guy, because when he knew Attrition he was an electronic music enthusiast who became their friend but soon after he founded Cold Spring Records. ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Planetdamage, Noirmagnetik, Dead Happy and Khost A Two Gods Production 34GODSCD "The offset of Elisa Day's operatic grandeur, Emese's bluesy and soulful melody, and Bowes' subdued yet throaty and guttural growl... such a layering of disparate vocal styles into such a disturbingly appealing package is unparalleled and adds to Attrition's singularity and longevity. Add to that a wispy helping of pulsing technoid bass and rhythms, Vancorvid's shrill violins to provide a rather ghostly and almost Victorian ambience, the discordant guitar and Anni Hogan's lonely pianos give the instrumentation an urgency befitting any dance floor while still nuanced in its production to demand deeper listening. There's a reason Attrition has lasted this long and continues to standout among the myriad of goth/industrial…” Ilker / Regen magazine ATTRITION ‘The Great Derailer’ c/w ‘The Pillar I (for Ossington)’ When asked about their dark art Joy Division said they were influenced by their post-industrial surroundings. I wonder if Coventry’s oppressive brutalist architecture had a similar effect on Attrition’s Martin Bowes because he’s been unsettling listeners for 40 years by illuminating the dark recesses of the human psyche with flickering candlelight. To mark Attrition’s fourth decade this new two track EP is released to highlight the bands Licht und Blindheit. Opening with a spectral wail, a piece of electronic voice phenomena, as if recorded at a séance and counterpointed by ice cold tinkering keys that stand stark, the title track is a truly disconcerting piece of music. The arrival of an upbeat central bassline, which in itself is very catchy, but it is the smorgasbord of sounds that swirl around, like apparitions circling an Ouija, that give ‘The Great Derailer’ its sinister feel. Voices are taken out of context, like a musical cut and paste, and their meanings are changed and thus they take on more indistinct and suggestive tones. Best listened through headphones it’s a multilayered affair, with Martin scrawling sound on every available surface as it swarms to the point of overload as different aspects are brought forward and then foregrounded. This EP can be viewed as different sides of the same coin as ‘The Pillar I (for Ossington)’ takes a more dark ambient approach. Sorrowful viola and a voice like a female hazzan almost cries against a backdrop of a cattle train rattling into the distance. It’s a track that breathes as it ululates with the voice that ebbs and flows. A discombobulating, cinematic soundscape the images it creates will be personal to you but to my mind it draws parallels to the Holocaust and positions the track somewhere between Steve Reich’s ‘Different Trains’ and the Swans ‘Soundtracks for the Blind’. Attrition are not always a comfortable listen but they’re always rewarding. Embrace the darkness... Pulse alternative magazine www.facebook.com/altpulse/ Attrition – "The Great Derailer" BY ADELE SINNAMON. ONYX MUSIC REVIEWS. FEB 18, 2020 When you talk about industrial electronic noise acts like Coil, Throbbing Gristle and In The Nursery, you have to add Coventry band, Attrition. January saw the release of a new single, “The Great Derailer” from the album, The Black Maria, which is due out in the coming months. Martin Bowes is the one member who has been continuously part of the group from the beginning in 1980 and has always steered Attrition to being a much lauded and still viable act now, even in 2020. Of course the title song is first, “The Great Derailer” which is exactly five minutes long and begins with the jangling of guitars, juxtaposted with female vocals. Bowes‘ gutteral tones gravel along with Emese Arvai-Illes as the female lead, almost floating above Bowes. Who is “The Great Derailer“? There is a sound bite that seems awfully like one U.S. president called Trump. The violins are discordant and almost manically high pitched with fervour, off-set by the mellow tones of the cello, all heightened by the soprano wailing, rising and falling. Whoever this Great Derailer is, they revel in the turmoil created by the direputable and unruly. The B-side is “The Pillar (For Ossington)“. Ossington Subway Station is located in Toronto, Canada and also the place that Martin made field recordings of the trains as they pass by and stop. This is a much more sublime piece, almost clasical in nature, with female vocals like the calling of the sirens to lure you into their world within a hurtling steel carriage. There are a bonus four remixes of “The Great Derailer” on the digital format. There is “The Great Derailer” by Planetdamage remix, “Entertain You” Dead Happy remix, “The Great Derailer” Mr Toma Vs Noirmagnetik remix and Khost‘s remix “Derail“. Each is diverse and a new surprise from Planetdamage’s laid back dismantling to Khost’s reimagination in industrial power noise. My first real introduction to Attrition was in the early 90’s with the compilation Recollections ’84 – ’89, put out by the label Projekt, who are well known for their electro ambient releases, even though I had heard the odd song here and there. As leaders in their field, they have released some powerful albums full of creativity and dark beauty. Now in 2020, on the Two Gods label, Attrition is about to grace our ears again. Martin Bowes is threatening us with another single and new album….. and I for one can’t wait to hear what comes next. foobar2000 1.2.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Attrition - The Big Lie (9:56) A collection of ambient and classical works originally released on Russian label Brudenia in 2000 this is the second expanded and remastered edition from Two Gods with many exclusive mixes! REGEN magazine. USA . USA 2007 A lovely collection of classical and ambient pieces from one of darkwave's most talented artists. Ranging from moody industrial soundscapes to modern classical arrangements, this collection of instrumental work showcases Attrition founder Martin Bowes as the master composer he is. Fans of the classically-inspired material explored on albums like Étude have reason to rejoice, as Esoteria features several previous Attrition tracks arranged for strings. "Cold Genius" is simply gorgeous, and a new interpretation of darkwave club track "At the Fiftieth Gate," though barely recognizable, is no less majestic than the original. There's much more going on here than chamber music though. "Nine Tails, to Follow You Round" creates a lingering dread with slow, dissonant pianos and echoing footsteps, while the hints of rowdy children's voices emerging from layered drones and synths give "Marianne's Dream" the dreamlike quality embodied in its title. On several tracks, Bowes appropriates familiar melodies for his own nefarious ends; "Silent Night" processes wisps of a familiar Christmas carol and lets them drift over rumbling drones and mechanical clunks, while a muffled synth rendition of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" on the dark ambience of "Dream Nine (Recurring)" places the piece in a decidedly less joyful context. Finishing things off is the epic-length "The Big Lie." In many ways, this is the most conventional Attrition track on the CD, and it would provide a perfect backdrop for Bowes' signature raspy whisper, but by leaving it as an instrumental he draws attention to sonic details that might otherwise go unnoticed: the subtle, tribal-inspired rhythms, the deep foghorn bleats of the pipe organ, and the juxtaposition of both organic and synthesized choir effects. When an artist puts out a collection like this one, it's usually just the devoted fans that have any need or want for it, but Esoteria has a lot more going for it than a couple of previously unreleased tracks. Anyone with an interest in neo-classical and dark ambient music, Attrition fan or not, will find plenty to savor here. ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

This is the Two Gods label remastered reissue with a bonus track in the Flip Shriner remix. Heathen Harvest zine 2009 Just like an obelisk defying the course of time and standing in there, immovable and lustrous, preserving its very essence in the continuous variation granted by entropy there is Attrition, the band, not the misfortune. This is one of those bands that has transcended experimentation and has definitively rooted its name in history with their multiple sonic vocations: Avant garde Electronica, Industrial and Neoclassical, their sonic palette is extensive and with such a vast discography that ranks them in the status of a prolific authority. “The hand that feeds” is a particular compilation that probably sides them with most of their famous counterparts from the scene, it is a compendium of remixes from their albums by highly regarded bands such as –In the Nursery-, -Chris n’Cosey-, -Dance or Die- and –Regenerator- and additional guests that finds curious interstices to adapt tracks and add an special touch, demark contours and characters or simply rejuvenate certain details. The CD was issued by the band’s own label A Two God records and has a suggestive erotica artwork by John Santerineross. The whole album set preserves a remix quality pretty much following the standards from the 80s-90s techniques, basically oriented beat worshipping later transcending into bits of break beat and amplifying the groovy experience from 808s sequences. Enhancing the sound mix for the pristine Neoclassical parts and giving more danceable punch to the whole repertoire. It is indeed an Attrition compilation, but these variations manage to transport the versions a bit more into a contemporary status and most of the times they are guessed right by the bands who choose them. After passing the beautiful artwork and the introductory track the work dives directly into Henry Purcell’s adaptation of “Cold Song” named by Attrition as “Cold Genious” and remixed by Polaxe, this is really moving track, with an exquisite neoclassical cadence and succulent set of electronic arrangements that suits perfectly in tempo and harmonic synchrony. This track will demark the aesthetic that the work introduced with its cover artwork, sexy and devious, a bit darkened and above all rhythmically provocative. Imagine Die Form went more psychedelic and classy, perhaps a bit more sophisticated but still too deviant there you’ll have the album’s direction. The shadows from an epoch appears through the compendium of tracks like for example: “Waste Not, Want...More” that comes as a ghost sequel from Kraftwerk and twisted Die form influences to a Front Line Assembly presence on the following “Cosmetic citizen” punctuating the beat and malicious sequence with the obscured voice and joined by the glorious operatic chorals and Neoclassical details. Chris n’ Cosey opted in “I Am (Eternity)” for tribal beat joined with a mind engulfing canticle and an instrumental eastern influx that imprints its characteristic dark touch and magical mesmerism over the track, transforming it in a hit for the dance hall of a savage sex ritual or perhaps a private party with lustful finalities. Another dark erotica with heart oppressing pulsation would be “My Friend Is Golden” by Regenerator back again with this retro remix and ritualistic rhythmic cadence, very oblivious and dark. My personal favourite from the album is “The mercy machine”, a remix executed by the band itself, it is a brilliant track with a really seducing rhythm and vicious voice along with the a catchy chorus sequence at charge of the female vocalist. All in all the remixes maintain a constant tension that combines a twisted sexual insight represented in the moving rhythms sided with the sublime spirituality from the Neo classical contours and atmospherics all this contrasted with the frantic mechanizations from Industrial music and the mantra like vocals. This work compilation summons a certain aura with its listening, a veil of seductive mystery and sexual secrecy that cleverly represents an epoch and results a clever diversion for the dark side of electronica. ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

This is the Two Gods label remastered reissue with 2 bonus track in Scenario Ii and The Cage - refrain. Sideline.com 2010 Attrition brings a new re-release from their back catalogue. “Keepsakers And Reflections” that had been originally released on 2001 on the American Invisible Records and was a collection of rare and unreleased tracks mainly from the 90s. This album is without hesitation one of my favorite Attrition albums ever. It’s an album full of surprises (thinking to several cover songs) while showing the very unique sound approach of Attrition that got really famous during the 90s. The debut songs are simply excellent. Starting with an unexpected remix of Dead Kennedy’s “Kill The Poor” Attrition proved to be simply genius in covering this famous punk anthem. The cover version comes closer to a kind of ethereal and mystical electronic wave piece of music. “Thin Red Line” coming next delivers a remix by Pankow. This version sounds more clubby while evoking some good souvenirs from the Italian masters of EBM. The 3rd song is also a cover version. John Foxx’ famous “Underpass”-hit has been totally transposed into the Attrition sound and is an honest and minimal adaptation. Among the other covers, there’s also Ministry’s “Cannibal Song” and Black Tape For A Blue Girl’s “Memory, Uncaring Friend”. The absolute masterpiece is without any shadow of a doubt the more atmospheric “High Tide”. “Metamorphosis” is another attention grabber where Martin Bowes walked on more soundtrack fields with a sensitive violin play as absolute apotheosis. The song “Keepsakes And Reflections” also takes a mystic approach. It’s really surprising to (re)discover these songs, which originally appeared on compilations and/or maxi’s. The last part of this album reveals a more soundtrack approach with songs like “Red Letter”, “L’echange”, “Nine Tails, To follow You round” or yet the bonus version of “The Cage” (entitled “Refrain”). This is not just a re-release, but a magic way to (re)discover this legendary band! ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Attrition - The Eternity LP- from Liar Society 2007 The Eternity LP is quintessential Attrition . Comprised of the previously released Eternity EP (97 - which featured four re-workings of classically-inspired songs from Etude ) and five cuts from 99's Kissing a Virtual Angel EP. As such, the songs range from the violin, electronics, and operatic vocal-fueled darkwave of "I Am (Eternity)" and "Cold Genius" to the more ambient, virtuosic "A Virtual Angel" and "Illuminati." While many repackaged and remastered albums in this vein are generally limited in appeal to completeists, The Eternity LP actually works as a rather fine introduction to Attrition's singular sense of aesthetics. Much like the work of Bernard Herrmann , Attrition's soundscapes are darkly cinematic, hinting at the horror that lurks just off-screen. The atmosphere is melancholic, but with the expectation that something is about to happen...and it's that tension that makes this music so very worthwhile. ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Attrition - Alter Ego (Live) (2:59) released July 10, 2006 Album mastered by Martin Bowes at The Cage Studios, England. 2006 Originally released on Two Gods records. 2006 Something Stirs. review from Sonic Curiosity This CD from 2006 features 47 minutes of dark industrial music culled from ancient compilations and old cassette releases by the band. Included are five previously unreleased tracks, three of them live from the General Wolfe in Coventry in 1981. These selections represent the band's early period. Attrition is: Martin Bowes, Julia Waller, and Ashley Niblock. The electronics are sparse but haunting, jarring and dire. Angry diodes screech and gurgle, producing an environment of eerie pulsations seasoned with growling noises of unearthly demeanor. Scraping sounds rise and claw for the audience's faces, while basic synthesizer bellows grumble with contention. Waller's vocals convey a desperation that rings from the cemetery, rich with ghostly timbre. Her lyrics are concerned with taboo subjects and forbidden affection. Death fuses with emotion as she croons with emphatic determination. Several tracks feature spooky basslines that generate a thumping undercurrent for the angry electronics. Percussion is present in a number of songs too, establishing mechanical rhythms overlaid with more forceful tempos. Sometimes the beats throb with hollow retorts, as if sounding from deep in a well. The compositions are melodic, but focused to agitate more than enthrall. The mood evoked by this tuneage is surly and dissident. The live tracks are abrasive and reminiscent of an angrier Joy Division. This music will appeal to fans who miss Throbbing Gristle and the good old days of Coil. ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

Review from Norman Records This is fascinating. I'd heard the name but now I get to put some music to the doom-laden face. As a Yorkshire lad of a certain vintage I've always had a passion for the Gothic sub-culture but as age envelopes me I find much of it faintly comical. However, this lovingly compiled collection of 4 track demos, early flexidisc excerpts and altogether impossible-to-source rarities from Martin Boyes' cult Croydon-based vehicle is a genuine revelation. Attrition were initially a 3-piece comprising Boyes and brother/sister friends Julia & Ashley Niblock. That Julia went on to work with cult weirdos The Legendary Pink Dots makes perfect logical sense. This is Gothic music but in the truest sense of the word. Welding together unhinged spidery industrialisms; moody EBM; dark, skittering electro and intoxicating, foreboding yet playful F/M vocals (that make Siouxsie and the like sound like stagy pretenders), this sprawling collection is absolutely essential to any lovers of dusty, doom-laden 80's tape culture and the experimental darkwave scene this wee gang helped spawn. Because of the limitations of the technology used, these strange songs have a raw, cracked vitality containing an alarming array of sonic invention and this near-feral reek of the unknown. Sometimes I wonder why I bother with new music when there's wonderful stuff like this, over 30 years old that has sat in somebody's attic unheard. Music as exciting and exotic as this from the long, long days when not absolutely everybody had a studio and was making shite dance music. Forward-wind to 20....no, don't fucking bother. I'd heartily recommend this to lovers of anything from Tuxedomoon's madder moments to authentic modern practitioners such asCrossover, whilst taking in the frightening, ghostly realms of early ClockDVA and Throbbing Gristle. ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)

After rediscovering the original 4 track tapes 10 years ago and remastering the song "Beast of Burden" for the 2006 ATTRITION best of collection i knew i had to remaster the rest of the album... along the way i discovered demos and alternate takes of some of the songs. I was also pleased to be in contact with the original cover photographer and find full colour photographs from that 1984 session. Rossetti's Compass - Desire (Burning Flesh Remix by ATTRITION) (3:45) 10. Rossetti's Compass - My Will (Master Slave Remix by Technomancer) (4:26) Attrition features the first two songs written specifically by Rossetti's Compass "My Will" and "Desire" which have remain unreleased until now in their original form. The latest two songs are "Attrition" and "Perfection" plus we have included 2 covers we really like, Shivering Skin by Tom Wunder and Love? and Coboloid Race by the Canadian giants of Minimal Electronic music Rational Youth. Also included here are four remixes, two of which are new, by Digital ENERGY and Fearpassage and two that are just too good to be left out by Technomancer and ATTRITION. So why Attrition? Because doing anything worth while is a hard slog, up hill in the rain. Because it can destroy more than it creates. Because most people take more than they give. Because walking the road less travelled is a lonely path. Because we fall, pick ourselves up and start again many times. Attrition - Noun "the process of reducing something's strength or effectiveness through sustained attack or pressure." The EP could have just as easily been called Fortitude - noun "courage in pain or adversity" but we didn't write a song called Fortitude. The 4 original songs on this EP are the 4 pillars of Rossetti's Compass. "Attrition" - represents relentless preasure, "Perfection" - the need to succeed, "Desire" - the love for what we do and "My Will" - the means by which it will be achieved. released November 19, 2015 Our Thanks go to : Claudia Terporten, Tylean Polley, Kirsty warner, Tracy Howe, Kevin Komoda, Simon Helm, Tom Wunder, Michael Fear, Bernd Kupke, David Erdmann, Roy Julian Digre, Tanja Gryzewski, Andrrzej Juja and John Costello. Mortal Clay - Fate Is Smiling (5:56) released March 1, 2009 WRAPPED IN THE GUISE OF MY FRIEND GOTHIC BEAUTY MAGAZINE “With over two decades of albums under it's belt, the UK band has truly impacted many. This album is a collection of Attrition covers, collected and re-mastered by Martin Bowes of Attrition. Considered the grandparents of dark experimental electronic music, they are the reason why many bands like them exist today. Fans of Nine Inch Nails or avant-garde cinema and art owe it to themselves to check out Attrition if they are unfamiliar. The covers on this album offer a fresh outlook on the band's music. Contributors are listed for each song including their websites. The covers truly create an aural setting of gloomy delight, with bold orchestral arrangements, choral harmonics, and the twisted path of industrial samplings. The ambiance of instrumentation is often contrasted by deep vocalizations, eerie operatic bellows or dramatic synth effects. It is remarkable that an album emulating this influential band stands alone as it's own work of art. “ ----------------------- foobar2000 1.2.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 Аудиокодек: FLAC (*.flac)
