August 2011 REM GENRE "Progressive Rock" ----------------------- The debut album Sammal – Sammal was recorded in summer 2011 at V.R. Studios Turku fully live and analog (expect small addings in vocals and guitars). Sammal had major difficulties to get the album self released as planned because of hard economic status all members were living in. Neither was it easier to get support as many directions saw Sammals music as too marginal and non-potential in sense of business altought they admitted alternative cultural value that Sammal was glowing.
Finally album was making it's way out to the public when record deal was signed with Svart Records in autumn 2012. The album was released in January 2013 and got very brilliant reception from it's audience and critics. Many critics found similarities to alternative folk, traditional slager and doom genres. September 2016 REM GENRE "Progressive Rock" ----------------------- With No 2, Sammal releases the follow-up to their critically acclaimed eponymous debut on February 14th through Svart Records. The present-day flagship of Finnish progressive rock sails back in time again to the authentic tones and warm soundscapes of the 1970s on their forthcoming EP, titled No 2. The band doesn’t show off with unnecessarily technical playing or super-hard song structures, but focuses on forging upbeat atmospheres with strong melodies and fresh vintage sounds. Sammal relies on live playing in the studio, which brings the listener closer to the band: the production breathes so care-free that you can almost touch the notes floating in the air.
No 2 is not a companion piece to the debut, nor is it a preview of the second full-length, which will be released via Svart Records next winter. It is a mini-album, which stands on its own. Sammal wanted to clear their closet from older gems, and prepare for a new era with this release. Three of the five songs featured on the EP are old demo songs, which were re-recorded at the same session with a new track “Vankina varisten” and a cover of Aphrodite’s Child’s “Magic Mirror," translated as “Peilin taikaa,” in the summer of 2013. August 2011 REM GENRE Folk ----------------------- For their third album Sammal have declared a “second coming”, declaring that they want to be themselves and shake off any comparisons with Black Sabbath or Uriah Heep. My personal recollection of listening to Sammal was of a retro progressive listening experience. Helpfully they have now said who they consider to be influential in their music and it’s an interesting mix: Vangelis, Moody Blues, Scandinavian jazz and Turkish progressive psychedelic music.

This was the first time the Finnish band really had to start writing from scratch, after taking a little break, from playing shows and composing. The material never comes too easy, and many ideas are thrown into the "some other project" or "this simply isn't good enough" bin. Song sketches have to sort of boil in a pot, different ingredients mix and flavors merge over time, before they can really be called songs, or compositions if you will. On this record maybe more than ever, each individual band member's musical taste takes center stage at times, without stealing the spotlight from the one thing that's always been most important to Sammal - the song! Throw away your preconceptions and join Sammal on a journey through exhilarating and spontaneous, sometimes joyful, at times sad and dark musical landscapes!
