By teaming up again with producer Len Lemeire (32CRASH, ANNE CLARK, IMPLANT, UNTER NULL, etc.) for the recording of their 2nd album, PSY'AVIAH again brilliantly scored a top 20 entry in BBC's "The Next Big Thing" contest with their collaboration with poet Suzi Q. Smith. Of course there are still here some songs which defend the more “sorrowful” part of the album and reminds us of PSY’AVIAH’s darker side: like for example “Alcubierre Drive” featuring once again lush guest vocals by Kyoko Baertsoen (ex-HOOVERPHONIC, LUNASCAPE) and her unique timbre fitting so well this blend of trip-hop rhythms and EBM basslines; or yet the melancholic and moving “Looking Back” and the very expressive voice of David Chamberlin (ENTRZELLE). But “Seven Sorrows, Seven Stars” definitely has this kind of interstellar shining touch, connecting dots together and offering us a very unique kind of modern synth pop with an upbeat futuristic twist reinforced by another impressive intelligent selection of vocalists, with this time a clear progression towards more male vocals than on past releases. Take for example the alt-pop “Frozen” which is fusing energy and soul with stunning vocals by Andrew Galucki, or yet the more house / 80’s e-pop approach on the dancey “Liberosis” and its driving synth lines, club beats and awesome voice of Alvin River, the loud e-pop “Face To Face” with Roeland van der Velde (MODEL DEPOSE), or yet the addictive body-pop song “From Another World” with Bernard Feron (MED, COMBAT VOICE…). Besides the more moody and almost “PSY’AVIAH classics” songs like “Lessons From The Past” with one of Yves’ favorite partners in crimes for years now the talented singer Mari Kattman, but also the minimal and semi-acoustic “Opia” with Pieter Van Vaerenbergh (METAFUZZ, ZELON) as well as the band’s last single and video clip song “Never Look Back” with Ellia Bisker (SWEET SOUBRETTE); we find harder and straight industrial-dance compositions evoking the band’s early and more aggressive period like on the dreamy club hit “Peace Paradox”, the more chaotic and cyber distorted “Wild Ride” feat. the unmatched Miss FD, a fully revised club version of “Stronger” with vocals this time by Addie Nicole (HALOCINE), as well as on the album’s new mega-hit “Not What I Expected” that is a sort of frontal floor-packing track with incisive synth lines, hypnotic grooves à la PRAGA KHAN lead by strong female vocals with attitude by Fallon Nieves. “Seven Sorrows, Seven Stars” is an album that speaks to both body and mind. Statistics get more and more alarming year after year. Belgian artist Yves Schelpe (aka PSY’AVIAH) was sadly enough, part of the statistics last year. He literally hit the bottom. He felt lost, deprived from any motivation or meaning of life. This 14-track album sort of retraces the Belgian artist’s music therapy efforts and his emotional ascension from the darkest thoughts towards more joyful moments of enlightenment. While PSY’AVIAH’s sound remains quite focused on his characteristic style range hovering somewhere between synthpop / electropop / triphop melange, with sometimes heavier electronic dance tracks, we clearly perceive the switch of atmosphere and moods from the more tortuous and self-questioning songs (e.g.: “The Great Disconnect”, Lost At Sea”, “Lonely Soul”, “Plan B”, “Aftermath”, “Heavy Heart”, “Under The Rain” or yet “Ghost”) towards more dynamic, shining and positively charged compositions (e.g.: “Sound Of New”, “Game Changer”, Reboot Reset Relay”, Mr. Vanity, “In The Sound”, “For Myself”). Compiled across one full length album, these beautiful, sincere and touchy songs make a whole and reveal PSY’AVIAH at his best, expanding his musical spectrum from jazzy trip-hop to electro rock and break beats while staying faithful to his modern electro / EBM roots. Yves Schelpe is also here perfectly surrounded by carefully selected male and female vocalists who each brilliantly render the poignant intimacy of these lyrics everyone can easily relate to. For this project she also collaborated with artist and musician Yves Schelpe of PSY’AVIAH who wrote a dark ambient soundtrack inspired by her work that played during the exhibition, reinforcing the atmosphere of the photographs, adding a unique sonic dimension to the exhibition, giving tones of hope and peace, but also of darkness and melancholy highlighting the contrasting sides of city and nature. Under the current Covid19 crisis that limited the number of visitors and forced the cancellation of the planned live performance of PSY’AVIAH at the closing of the exhibition, together with both artists, we decided to make this poignant soundtrack available for everyone to not only reveal another facet of PSY’AVIAH’s eclectic work and talent, but also to draw the attention of the fans to GNY’s stunning photographic work. Today, Yves Schelpe brings the surprise one step further by releasing a new video clip and extended EP for this amazing PSY’AVIAH classic song “Ok”! Originally released back in 2011, the new 2022 version benefits from the artist’s ever evolving production skills and features new stunning vocal melodies sung by Huong Su with additional guitars and carrying violins by Irina Markevich, metamorphosing this song into a more triphop / indie pop tune. “Ok” questions the depth of that social question we use at almost every human encounter asking mechanically “how are you?”, expecting “Ok” as automatic answer without really paying attention nor trying to find out what truth really lurks behind this or considering being empathic… “Everything is going Ok” being nothing but a window-dressing expression, some kind of emotional mask. Well, the essence of the tongue-in-cheek message of this song was beautifully translated into this must-see slow-motion video clip, result of Yves Schelpe’s fruitful collaboration talented actress Gwendolin Harissa Van Jole & Gwenny Cooman of GNY Photography.
