Airing overnight five nights a week, the show profiled alternative and indie music and culture, including film, comics, literature and art. The show was once described by longtime host Brent Bambury as "explaining fringe culture to a comfortable mainstream audience," and by his successor Patti Schmidt as "invented with an idea of what John Peel's show was, but without ever having heard it."

Invited to do Brave New Waves’ inaugural session in the newly built studio was the Rheostatics, and so it is only fitting, nearly 30 years later, that the first-released Brave New Waves Session is also the same band, and a band that symbolizes Canadian music and the Canadian imaginary. Formed in 1978, the Rheostatics, best-known for their mid-90s hit “Claire” are consistently rated as one of Canada’s greatest bands, and their albums, including Whale Music, Melville, and Introducing Happiness amongst Canada’s best. Many of the band’s best-loved songs, such as “Dopefiends and Boozehounds” and “Christopher,” appear in early, raw versions on this session. The Rheostatics’ Brave New Waves Session was recorded on February 7th, 1988. A few years later, they would be invited once again to do an acoustic set, this time in promotion of the 1991 album These Days. The CBC sessions capture the Grapes in their youth, full of energy and excitement, with a jam-like quality to the music that is less apparent on the album versions. The sessions have never been released commercially. The Grapes of Wrath formed in 1983 and signed to Nettwerk Records the following year. Their albums Treehouse, Now & Again, These Days and the 2013 High Road are classics in Canadian rock, spawning such hits as “Peace of Mind” and “I Am Here.” The Grapes of Wrath’s Brave New Waves Session was recorded on May 25th, 1988. The band toured with The Tragically Hip and went on to produce a final album, Conquistador, in 1995. Formed by John Critchley, Mike Robbins, Jim Hughes and Grant Ethier in Toronto, 13 Engines’ brand of rock was way ahead of its time in the mid-80s, well before the alternative rock craze hit the mainstream. The band is impressive on their Brave New Waves session, captured by Kevin Komoda in their prime, complete fuzzy guitars and the magic vocals of John Critchley. The 13 Engines Brave New Waves session was recorded on August 8th, 1989 and first broadcast in November of the same year. Along with Sloan, Eric’s Trip, and others, Jale was part of the “Halifax scene” that caught the attention of labels in the early ‘90s, and one of the band’s singers, Jennifer Pierce, was backing vocalist for Sloan on Smeared and other releases. Landing a record deal with Sub Pop Records, Jale released their debut Dreamcake in 1994, followed by a second album, So Wound, in 1996. Jale’s style is a mix of power pop and grunge, and although the band wears its “Halifax sound” influences on its sleeves, the foursome transcend their hometown, particularly on the live-sounding Brave New Waves session. The session captures a young band still trying to find their voice, and showcases songs that would eventually end up on Dreamcake, but also includes rarer songs that only appeared on independent 7”s or promo releases, including the wonderful “More or Less.” The Jale Brave New Waves session was recorded in the Spring of 1993 and first mixed by Andrew Frank at DNA Studios in Old Montreal. A later mix, which ended up being CBC Radio’s air version was done by Kevin Komoda on May 26th, 1993. The band formed by Alex Soria in 1978 managed a couple of EPs, an album, and a best of, but this was enough to cement their status as Montreal’s best punk band of the 80s, and it landed them a Brave New Waves session in 1988 that is equally legendary. Groups as diverse as the Goo-Goo Dolls, Meat Puppets, and Bob Mould cite the Nils as influences, and despite their underground status, the band did tour America at least seven times in the 80s, before their label, Profile Records, went bankrupt. Ultimately, their debut self-titled album sold over 50,000 copies and was recommended in Rolling Stone. The band’s brand of punk meets power-pop won over tons of fans. They even released a comeback album in 2015 that was well received and covered by NOW Magazine, La Presse, the Montreal Gazette, and Exclaim! This release includes a never-heard bonus track, a download card with bonus interviews, and completely updated and revised artwork, partially modified from the original Spooky sleeve art. Led by Oxford philosophy graduate Pat Fish (the Jazz Butcher himself) and featuring a dazzling array of co-conspirators (including David Jay of Love And Rockets and Bauhaus fame), The Jazz Butcher is one of the longest running and most cult pop bands in Britain, having recorded some 15 albums since its founding in 1982. The band was one of the gems on the Creation Records roster, and has recently seen an incredible reissue series on Fire Records. The Jazz Butcher’s Brave New Waves session was recorded on June 5th, 1988 in CBC Studio 13 in Montreal. The recording features cameos by both Kevin Komoda (Rational Youth) and Brent Bambury (the Brave New Waves host). An over the top rendition of “Sex Engine” includes a memorable dig at Skinny Puppy, as well as at other Canadian icons. First formed in 1979, Severed Heads is an Australian electronic and experimental project led by Tom Ellard since 1981. In the mid- to late-80s, the project saw its biggest commercial successes with releases on Nettwerk, Billboard chart positions, and huge European and American tours. The band’s 1986 tour with Skinny Puppy resulted in this now infamous Brave New Waves recording, which to date has never been released commercially. Severed Heads’ Brave New Waves session is released for the first time by Artoffact Records on CD, Vinyl, and digital formats. A rare moment of uncertainty after Psyche’s final performance with Stephen Huss, Eric Klaver joined the band to create a trio on stage and produce the most obscure recordings of Psyche’s career. In 1988, Darrin and Eric found themselves in the studio with Kevin Komoda for a Brave New Waves session with only sketches of material they had improvised in between shows in Montreal and Quebec City. Aside from Eric’s reworking of “Unveiling The Secret” at the last minute, Psyche had a scheduled recording date with this prestigious program on CBC, and no idea how to go about fulfilling their potential session. As well, Brent Bambury gives one of his most amazing interviews ever with frontman Darrin Huss after being postcard pals throughout Psyche’s initial recording time in Paris, where the Huss brothers created Unveiling The Secret. Darrin finally met his favourite broadcaster who played all his favourite songs, and inspired new discoveries while he stayed up late at night in his Edmonton home just to hear this awesome program. An absolutely essential collection for fans of the Brave New Waves series, and for fans of the band. Her performance at the Montreal International Jazz Festival was a highlight for many, and Artoffact Records is pleased to present it again, 30 years later as part of the Brave New Waves sessions series. Carmel first came to light in the early 1980s when the band’s debut single landed on number one on the UK independent chart. They soon found a home on London Records which led to the debut album The Drum is Everything. A second album (co-produced by Brian Eno) The Falling followed shortly after, the first single from which sold over half a million copies. Several more albums on London Records and East West Records followed, and the band has continued in one form or another ever since. There are not many in the know, but for those who are, Phleg Camp was the best. Seriously. Phleg Camp was a super-group before they knew it. Although the band never reached a large audience, every member went on to have an illustrious career in the music industry. Gavin Brown is now a music producer, who can claim Metric, Sarah Harmer, the Tragically Hip, and Barenaked Ladies as clients. Over 30 records he’s worked on have won or been nominated for Juno Awards. He is also an accomplished drummer and has lent those talents to the likes of Danko Jones, Crush, Great Big Sea, Big Sugar, and many others. Sean Dean formed popular rock and roll band The Sadies, whose releases on Yep Roc and Outside Music, as well as collaborations with Neko Case, Gord Downie, Blue Rodeo, and many others are legendary. Finally, Eric Chenaux’s solo work for Constellation Records has been praised by The Quietus, Tiny Mix Tapes, and Drowned in Sound. After a phenomenal debut record (on Mint Records) which saw these self-admitted amateurs reach the top 10 of Canada’s college radio charts, the trio of Robynn Iwata, Neko Case and Lisa Marr found themselves further capturing the hearts of music fans nationwide during their first cross-country tour. More pertinent to the issue at hand, whilst on that tour they also found themselves in the CBC’s Montreal studios laying down the sweet and sour slab of live ear candy you find in front of you — and boy, is it ever an easy treat to swallow! This session perfectly captures the group’s early bubblegum-pop vibe, here honed sharp-but-friendly by the forces of ‘the road’. Guitarist Iwata and drummer Case’s back-up vocals are perfectly in sync as bassist Marr’s lead voice optimistically wraps playful children’s book tales around dreamy heartbreak-recovery overlays. Rhythmically primal but compositionally musical, cub reaches emotional complexity through deceptively simple methods. No instrument ever does more than necessary, and in fact, the musical sparseness only contributes positively to the overall direct, energetic joy that these recordings capture. cub’s Brave New Waves Session was recorded on May 19th, 1993 and first broadcast in January the following year. Some people touch fame everywhere they go. The Braun Brothers, Dan and Josh, are exactly those kinds of wizards. In the early 80s, they played in Circus Mort with future Swans singer Michael Gira on vocals, and then Dan Braun was one of the earliest member of Swans. A year later saw them in The Del-Byzanteens with the one and only Jim Jarmusch. Dan Braun was also in a band with the future Madonna, toured and recorded with the late Glenn Branca, and performed with T-Venus (Julia Heyward and Pat Irwin). In the mid-80s the Braun brothers formed Deep Six, a short-lived garage rock band that produced one amazing album and a great 7”. Memory of the band’s Brave New Waves session is hazy at best. The band members remember doing a radio session but are not sure if it was in Montreal or not. One way or another, the session ended up on Brave New Waves, curated by the team of Heather Wallace, Kevin Komoda, and Brent Bambury. Shortly after the session’s broadcast, Deep Six disbanded, with nearly a decade of musical experience, touching fame but never quite attaining it themselves. Those who were there in those days--and those who listen to the band’s unreleased material on vinyl now--understand the magic that the Braun Brothers brought, even if it was to a select few. released August 24, 2018
