They were students pursuing degrees at the Loyola University music department in New Orleans, Robinson in classical guitar and Cassin in cello. Both had played rock music in bands since their early days, influenced by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix and Cream. As a teenager, Robinson led the seminal Hendrix-inspired acid/rock/ hippie band Ejaculation, gaining notoriety for playing free concerts in Audubon Park every Sunday in the late 60's and early 70's. Ejaculation evolved into a Yes/King Crimson/Zappa influenced band called Laugh in The Dark. When Robinson and Cassin met, The Mahavishnu Orchestra had appeared on the scene, and now a music that combined it all - rock, classical, jazz - seemed like a viable road to follow. They formed Woodenhead with Ejaculation / Laugh In The Dark drummer Tommy Lachin and with bassist/keyboard player Edgar Lipps. The band performed original instrumental songs with odd meters, complicated arrangements and improvised solos in a loud, raw rock style. They played New Orleans clubs like Ford's Place and Tipitina's, and they played in multi-style concerts with rock and jazz groups at the Contemporary Arts Center. Soon they were hired for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (by young festival promoter Quint Davis who club-hopped into Ford's Place).
A chance encounter with the Dixie Dregs provided further inspiration. Woodenhead had been called to open for them at a club gig. The Dregs'road crew and equipment were delayed and Woodenhead held down the fort, playing a packed house for hours. When the Dregs finally took the stage, their music made a big impression on Robinson, who saw a way to incorporate even more of his own rock roots into the music. Woodenhead would play with the Dregs on several other occasions. After a series of personnel changes, including a year-long highly creative and often stormy relationship with Warner Brothers artist space-jazz vocalist Angelle Trosclair, the current lineup, guitarist Robinson and pianist Fran Comiskey, bassist Paul Clement and drummer Mark Whitaker, came together.
