There is a popular improvisational scene there, where many classically trained musicians will come together and create experimental textures and harmonies with various instruments, including strings, woodwinds, and brass. This is in part how I met Allen Russell (who also produces electronic music as GLOOSTIKK, as well as being part of the groups Swing Chevron and Tontine Ensemble), an outstanding and hard-working violinist with whom I was lucky enough to work on this project. At the time of this project's beginning I was often creating melodies and harmonies very meticulously and slowly. For this project, I wanted to challenge myself to improvise more (as well as experiment with new time signatures and tempo changes) and allow melodies and harmonies to come more freely. These tracks were made in brief but intense sessions where I would quickly create simple arrangements and basic percussive and melodic bits while Allen improvised with his violins. I'd then work on the tracks more meticulously later, working out the details of the rhythms, editing and cutting up violin samples, and recording more instruments. My goal was to achieve a sound that felt very real and organic, despite being in some sense very produced and programmed. I had been to southern California several times before, visiting friends, but living here has been nothing short of exhilarating. It has just reminded me even more how much I love California as a whole. The sheer amount of creative talent and artistic events happening in this area are staggering. I've met lots of inspiring people already, and I hope to meet more. I've also been to many beautiful places that have inspired some of my music, such as Joshua Tree and the Channel Islands of California. I hope this album can accompany the simple moments of pure joy that we too often pass over in our lives, from a scenic drive with the windows down to a beautiful view atop a mountain to becoming intimate with someone for the first time. First, it represents a transition in my sound where I'm using more live drums rather than only programmed loops or sampled beats. I still love sampling and do it a lot but I've become very interested in experimenting with recording drums and layering them/processing them in different ways and using different mic placements to capture the performance. Secondly, this was a challenge for myself to rely on actual performances in the songs instead of just loops, and to use absolutely no outside samples whatsoever. The track 'Painted Sky' is the sole exception to this (although the samples in that track are minimal), as this was a track leftover from the Tamalpais sessions that I wanted to include. Every sound you hear in all the other tracks was simply recorded and tracked. This forced me to think way more about compelling songwriting as opposed to relying a bit more heavily on sound design or textures, which is what I do in a lot of my other work. Finally, it represents my transition to a lifestyle in Los Angeles proper, whereas before I was living in the suburbs closer to the desert. It's made a huge difference in my lifestyle and I feel incredibly grateful to be able to interact with so many talented and friendly musicians in the city. This album to me expresses the feeling of embracing life in all its forms, with its different perspectives, moods, sounds, energies. In contrast to previous work, which was somewhat more reflective, this album was made with a lot of creative energy and drive. When starting each track I felt like I was overflowing with ideas that I had to try out and get down as soon as possible. Sometimes the inspiration would come from listening to various new albums on Bandcamp from around the world: jazz, African folk, hip-hop, Neo-soul, funk, afrobeat. Other times the inspiration would come simply from biking around Los Angeles and taking in sights and sounds from different parts of the city. I think there can easily be pressure when making to album for it to feel as though each album has to embody a sophisticated concept or make some specific statement. Albums expressing abstract concepts or political or social statements are important for the musical culture, to be sure; but music is also an expression of where the artist is at spiritually, emotionally, and creatively at a certain point in time. This is what Maisha means for me. It represents the joys, excitements, and bursts of creative feeling, as well as the tranquility and nostalgia that I felt at times while making it. With this work, as with my previous work, I am ever seeking to defy genre. Of course, it’s clear that downtempo and trip-hop music form the backbone of what I am doing, but I am also trying to challenge those labels all the time by exploring different rhythms, scales, arrangements, and instruments. I hope this album helps you find inspiration to express yourself or explore in whatever ways are possible or speak to you in your life, as it did for me. Each album I make represents a time or phase of my life for me, one that I unknowingly enter when I start to express myself through sonic exploration, collaboration, and improvisation, and that I fully appreciate and realize only retrospectively as I am leaving that time. This album came to me during a somewhat difficult time in which I was grappling with a sense of identity and purpose while also attempting to balance that with self-acceptance and compassion. The most beautiful thing about Los Angeles to me is that living here I am surrounded by the most ambitious, driven and inspiring people; but that can also make it an environment where losing sight of self-love and self-compassion can be crushing and damaging to one’s perspective. Through this album I endlessly sought to rediscover the joy and excitement of simple creation, especially with others, which explains in part why this album has more collaboration than any of my previous work. Connecting my music to my love and enjoyment of life, rather than thinking about it first and foremost as an external goal or a career, was instrumental in helping me restore this balance. The album was named after the track Usawa, made with my friend Onyi, that came to represent the mood and direction of the album. We made it with very little planning and really just expressing ourselves and trying out lots of ideas in the moment, which became a beautiful way for us to collaborate and set the tone for our other collaborations. I hope that in listening you can use this music to create, rediscover, or enhance the balance of joy and dedication. For this album however I wanted to pursue a new identity, one that I didn't feel was necessarily tied to a downtempo/triphop vibe and could explore more freely and express emotions in different ways. So instead I began to draw on influences from post-rock, post-classical, and even baroque music; all while keeping the mood very cinematic. This is the result, and aside from my musical influences it has been heavily inspired by my travels the last two summers in Ireland, Norway, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands, whose epic landscapes are truly unforgettable. My main project as Tristan de Liège will continue, but I expect Tethys will always be an outlet for me to explore in other ways. Tethys - Postlude (1:26) "In the summer of 2016 I traveled to Iceland and the Faroe Islands. One of the most striking things about these two countries is that their landscapes are (almost) entirely devoid of trees. In general it felt surreal to walk around and explore them. I wanted this album to reflect that dreamlike feeling I had when I was there. The second thing that struck me about these places, especially the Faroe Islands, is how harsh and hostile of a place it is. Many of the Faroe Islands can only be reached by a small boat and because there are no trees there is little shelter from wind and rain. The winters only have a few hours of very dim light because of how far north the islands are located. Residents I spoke to told me about how lonely and emotionally devastating the winters can be simply due to the cold and lack of light day after day. I tried to capture this feeling in some of tracks by creating large soundscapes with lots of space to give Yvette’s violin work more emotional impact. These soundscapes also help capture the sense of awe I felt seeing the epic mountains and valleys in Iceland and the Faroe Islands. Tethys - Movement VI (5:26) This string quartet composition, divided into 6 segments, was written in the fall of 2017, when I was living in a small section of a large artist loft in the Downtown Arts District in Los Angeles. The pieces underwent several stages of evolution. Initially, they began as warped versions of tracks from the second Tethys album (II), to which I had intended to add expanded string sections. After seeing a live performance from the Kronos Quartet, I was inspired to challenge myself to actually write string quartet compositions using these Tethys pieces as starting points. When I was writing them in some portions of the pieces I stayed close to the original Tethys compositions and kept a similar structure and central melodies. In others I explored very different ideas and went in new directions. I listened to lots of different compositions for inspiration, from Arvo Pärt to Björk to Claude Debussy and Philip Glass. I usually listened to these while riding my bike around downtown Los Angeles to take breaks from writing. The next phase of evolution came when the pieces were properly transcribed, which resulted in a few changes for ease of performance and clarity of the pieces, based especially on advice from the strings players themselves. Finally, we made some slight changes when doing the actual recording itself when I noticed certain things might sound clearer or some change in articulation would add an emotional impact. One of the things I loved most about writing these pieces is that as an electronic musician I always struggle to make music that stays simple and minimalistic. As a producer I have infinite possibilities for layering synths and samples on top of each other when making tracks, but in a string quartet one is limited to four voices at any given time. I think this restriction helped me explore minimalism a bit more and challenged me creatively. Although I loved writing these pieces, the time at which I was writing them was certainly a somewhat confusing and difficult time in my life, during which periodic but brief episodes of depression and a sense of loneliness and isolation would come to me in waves. In retrospect, it turned out to be a time of emotional growth that needed to happen but the process was nevertheless painful. Consequently, the pieces have a rather mournful tone. I hope anyone feeling a sense of isolation can relate to these pieces as a way of expressing it. I want to thank all the musicians involved in performing and recording this quartet with me, and providing me helpful advice along the way: Yvette Holzwarth, Christopher Votek, Patrick Behnke, and Luis Mascaro.
