Early collaborations with fellow musician, Felix Jay, using piano, Fender Rhodes and electronics led to an initial CD release, Tall Cloudtrees Falling. This inspired a wonderful partnership with Hans-Joachim Roedelius and their second release, Meeting the Magus. Having performed live in a number of interesting locations such as artists studios and art galleries – a late night performance at one such studio resulting in the basis of Entertaining Angels, their third CD – they produced one more collection, Vortexia. Andrew then produced a number of video and site-specific, sound installations. This introduced him to the technique of working with field recordings, often leaving in the sonic detritus that most would seek to eliminate as being ‘non-musical’. The work he now produces blends these three elements, piano, electronics and found sounds into a mix that on the surface sounds quite minimal and open, but on closer listening, contains detailed fragments, constantly shifting and changing its place.
The latest in a series of sublime recordings, The Silent Cartographer is Andrew Heath’s Disco Gecko debut.
The album features quiet, intimate music that explores sounds from both acoustic (piano) and electronic (synthesizers) sources, along with field recordings and found sounds.
This is immersive, ambient music.
However, it is not music that stays in one place: it drifts and constantly shifts as it charts new topographies, creating and following maps that are full of change.
If you listen carefully you’ll often hear quiet, random glitches or shimmering dissonances which fall by happy accident in exactly the right place. I had been working with fellow musician Felix Jay as the duo Aqueous, producing improvised music that eventually led to the release of our debut, "Tall Cloudtrees Falling". Felix knew Hans-Joachim Roedelius and had contributed to his "Bastionen Der Liebe" release, and upon hearing that Joachim was to be in England, he organised a day’s recording session at his home. It was a inspirational experience to play with Joachim, as he was such a kind and gentle man, and put us immediately at ease with his calm, quiet manner. The session resulted in the tracks featured on the release of "Meeting the Magus", with titles taking their cue from the fact that much of the work was conceived on Easter Sunday. The idea for re-working Meeting the Magus coalesced slowly after I had organised and played a wonderful concert with Joachim a couple of years ago. I always felt there was beautiful work on the original album that I wanted to re-visit and thought it would be interesting to use the melodic elements from that original release, adding textures and found sounds from my own way of working. So a process began early this year which has finally led to “After the Magus - to resound”. Flux is ambient, lower-case music that continues the journey started by ‘The Silent Cartographer’.
Both warmer and darker than its predecessor, there are no beats or percussion - asymmetric loops of processed found sounds pulse to provide rhythmic shift over a bed of processed field recordings and found sounds above which float, half-glimpsed piano melodies and electronic phrases.
It is quiet and immersive but rarely still, always shifting to create new landmarks lit by glitch and inharmonic drift.
Tiny details and abstract, organic pin-pricks of sound, emerge and subside in a constant state of flux. The first fruit of a collaboration born from recordings that were made between summer 2012 and the following spring at my home. Myself and Peter Maynard had been developing our musical collaboration after I invited him to work with me on a sound installation ‘The Sonority of Objects’. We began to realise that we were creating music that seemed to show us a new place, an unseen view we had not taken in before and so we began to explore the landscape we found. This collection of pieces - Dust - are careful edits taken from hours of improvised recordings. Using a minimum of equipment to ‘play’ our found sounds and balance them with piano and electronics, the sound is unmistakably ambient and lower case, but it also has a beautiful harmonious and pastoral quality that sets it perfectly within an English landscape. The second instalment of improvised soundscape works from myself and Peter Maynard. Threshold is a continuation of the same process that created Dust. We would set up our equipment and play for hours. Following many more hours of editing and listening, music was distilled down and down until we were left with just Dust and Threshold. The result is an immersive journey through wide vistas and quiet views, enveloped by ever changing weather patterns. At times, even we can’t always tell who played what. Intimate piano, treated field recordings and sparse electronics combine to create a sound journey through the cultural landscape of Europe. Drawing on recent travels in Europe - the More-ohr-Less festival, organised by Hans-Joachim Roedelius in Lunz, Austria and visiting fellow musician and collaborator, Anne Chris Bakker in Groningen in the north of the Netherlands - 'Europa' portrays the quiet visual, musical and architectural details of a diverse, yet shared continent.

Found . Assemble continues to explore my obsession for processing found sounds and field recordings and then setting them against quiet piano phrases and lower case electronics. In my recent work, I have become fascinated with the, often quiet, sounds of activity within large interior spaces - footsteps and talking or even whispering. I’ve recently found myself recording in, not only churches and cathedrals, but more unusual spaces such as train stations and tunnels. I have also been pushing the sound of the piano to exaggerate it’s more ‘mechanical’ tones - the ones we often try to hide. The wonderful sound of the hammers or the pedals. All inspiration to me. Probably the biggest new element in my recent work however, is the addition of other musicians. I have had the great fortune to meet and work with two wonderful and gifted people. Bill Howgego plays stunning bass clarinet on ‘Shadows and Half Light’ and Stéphane Marlot, a beautiful French cello on ‘A Stillness of Place’.There is more to come from these two and maybe others! My other main collaboration is with the Dutch, ambient musician, Anne Chris Bakker. Over for a few days in mid April, we play Iklectik Arts Lab in London on Good Friday and then the next day in The Pavilion (The Museum in the Park) as part of the Site Arts festival in Stroud. More live work is planned so stay tuned. Triptych in Blue is the latest installment from a music partnership that began in 1997 when Andrew Heath and Felix Jay, under the name Aqueuous, recorded the wonderful ambient album ‘Meeting the Magus’ with one of the founding fathers of ambient, Hans-Joachim Roedelius. Nearly 20 years later, Andrew Heath curated an exciting concert at ‘The Brunel Goods Shed’ in Stroud on September 2016 which bought together Roedelius and Andrew with fellow experimental musician, Christopher Chaplin. This rare opportunity to collaborate offered up three stunning live recordings. Triptych in Blue captures that unique concert and is ambient music of the highest order: constantly changing and shifting, it presents the listener with three musicians in perfect balance with each other. The collaboration between Anne Chris Bakker and Andrew Heath is overwhelmingly informed by both an open, minimal landscape and a love of process, allowing the sounds and music to form as you would unfold a map - each section revealing a new and uncharted vista. Texture and lower case, drifting drones, tones and fragile notes create music that hangs in the air - suspended in time and place. In 2015, an invitation for Anne Chris to play in the UK’s Resound festival cemented a friendship and mutual admiration of each other’s music. Early the following year, Andrew visited Anne Chris in the north of the Netherlands for a week of inspired improvisation - spending their time gathering field recordings, composing and of course, cycling. A huge volume of work was produced, painstakingly edited over the next few months to produce, Lichtzin. Pause and contemplate, for here are immersive driftscapes and drones which shimmer and pulse with fragile, half-glimpsed melodies. Soundings continues Andrew Heath's exploration and manipulation of found sounds and field recordings to create textures and pointillist staccato notes of sound which are then set against quiet piano phrases and shimmering electronic treatments. The album explores his growing fascination with the quiet sounds of people within interior spaces – footsteps, talking, even whispering - the sound of voices that are often rendered so faint and that are buried so deep that they become unintelligible, simply leaving a trace of speech. Softer and darker, yet more open and minimal than previous releases, Evenfall continues Andrew Heath’s fascination of, and experimentation with, ‘found sounds’ and treated field recordings, around which he weaves shimmering electronics and delicately phrased piano. He has expanded to include two new elements in his musical armoury, guitar and tape manipulation, which he balances with sounds as diverse as the clicking of electric fences and the drone of a ship’s engines. The results are magical: filigree piano work, dictaphone tape textures from another age and soaring cloud guitar combine to create otherworldly beauty. Evenfall is inspired and informed by the dimming of daylight and the coming of night from one particular moment. “One evening late last year, I found myself recording in remote woodlands. I stood still, pressed record, darkness fell, it started to rain… as I remained silent, so the sounds around me emerged and came to life.” Evenfall was recorded in the Cotswolds, England late last year and this spring, and features two collaborations: a stunning and sublime soprano saxophone by Lydia Kenny on ‘The Still of Evenfall’ and the intimately powerful voice of poet Maria Stadnicka on ‘The Garden Reveals Itself’. Motion is an innovative new album by sound artists Toby Marks and Andrew Heath. Although the pair have collaborated on individual tracks and shows before, this is the first album they have worked on together. Toby and Andrew started making extensive field recordings on trips to the four corners of Britain during 2018. They went deep into Llechwedd Slate Caverns in Wales, explored Suttle Stone Quarries in Bournemouth, hopped on the Swanage Ferry to Poole Harbour, took to the air with the Yorkshire Gliding Club, floated down the Leeds & Liverpool Canal and rode the Bure Valley Railway in Norfolk. By the end they had a staggering hundred hours of audio in total, which they processed and transformed, blending piano, guitars and electronics, to produce a deeply meditative, endlessly unfolding collection. Sometimes evoking images of machinery, sometimes of nature, these pieces flow and twist, at all times maintaining a humanity and sense of personal experience at their core. At times intense, sometimes barely even present in the mix, the music enthralls and entices, drawing the listener into a world both seemingly familiar and weirdly unknown – a quite alien, and yet still organic, space, a space which is of this world and yet ultimately of Marks and Heath’s own invention. ‘The Silence that Remains…’ is drawn from four pieces that I was originally commissioned to write last year by Wakewood films for a documentary called ‘The Echoing Space’ about Leith Hill Place. A beautiful old house nestled in the Surrey Hills which has many famous connections, Leith Hill Place was given to the National Trust by the English composer, Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1945. The house had been his childhood home and was previously owned by the Wedgewood family and frequented by Charles Darwin. Interestingly, Vaughan Williams’ humble John Broadwood & Sons upright piano remains part of the collection at Leith Hill Place. I was completely captivated in the film, by an overwhelming sense of stillness, of time drawn out, of a house awakening from a deep slumber. However, there are also darker perspectives that the film captured beautifully and I hope that the music has reflected and conveys that mood. The four pieces that now form this EP, are all slightly reworked and in one piece I’ve taken the liberty of re-writing the piano part. It was a joy to re-visit this work and indeed to put titles to the four pieces, so cementing their connection in my mind, to this beautiful, historic house. In the early summer of this year, I was delighted to be commissioned by the Wool & Water Arts Festival to write a piece of music inspired by the mills and weaving industry that both historically and, to a lesser extent, remains within the beautiful, rural landscape of Stroud and the surrounding areas. The result is Warp & Weft - part soundscape, part classical music, Warp & Weft draws its musical influence from elements as diverse as Philip Glass and The Art of Noise. Using recordings of weaving looms and other weaving mill sounds it explores the repetitive, rhythmic qualities of weaving machinery and their syncopated musical structures. Over three distinct sections, it recreates and portrays sonically, a day in the life of a mill worker as they move between very different sound worlds. Incorporating two amazing musicians, Lydia Kenny on Soprano Saxophone and Angie Spencer on violin the piece stirs from it’s sleeping calm, explodes with the poly-rhythmic energy and dynamism of life in the mills and then finds its peace as it draws to the close of the day. Lighting Beacons is my response to the strange times we all find ourselves in at the present. Lock-down and self-isolation have so quickly become the new normal and yet, within this slightly surreal time, a quiet calm has come about. The weather is beautiful and spring is coming. People are walking and we have time to ‘stand and stare’. I have become interested in how people are communicating during this time, using new means now that we are all 'distancing' - of sending messages out into the world. And so, the concept of ‘Lighting Beacons’ came about. I have recently been experimenting musically with some interesting processes and it seemed to me that they formed cohesive pieces that in a way, belonged to this particular time and social construct that we find ourselves in. Three calm and dreamlike, yet at times slightly dissonant pieces that seem to float in the air, or be signalled from beacons as messages, passed between people. “A Trace of Phosphor” is an intimate new body of work from Andrew Heath.
Drawn from the cathartic dark of winter days, the album features sublime piano tone-clusters and field recordings amidst experimental, discordant shimmers. An intensely personal collection, many tracks reflect the darkness of winter and were mainly recorded at night.
The result is a sombre and more melancholic sound than Andrew is known for, but one that ultimately remains immersive, moving and at times beautiful. A slow lament for the quiet days of the early summer. As the noise levels dropped and skies cleared we chanced upon a quiet that I had never known before and I felt profoundly moved by this lack of human sound. As those days recede from us and become half glimpsed memories, I feel such a strong pull to return and a regret that I cannot do so. Halcyon days is a narrative of my journey through the landscape that is so dear to me. Across meadows, down through beech woods to the little stream deep in the valley where there was no-one but me to find and chance upon a stillness that we were all so lucky to have felt. The latest in a series of sublime recordings, The Silent Cartographer is Andrew Heath’s Disco Gecko debut.
I had been working with fellow musician Felix Jay as the duo Aqueous, producing improvised music that eventually led to the release of our debut, "Tall Cloudtrees Falling".
Flux is ambient, lower-case music that continues the journey started by ‘The Silent Cartographer’.
The first fruit of a collaboration born from recordings that were made between summer 2012 and the following spring at my home. Myself and Peter Maynard had been developing our musical collaboration after I invited him to work with me on a sound installation ‘The Sonority of Objects’. We began to realise that we were creating music that seemed to show us a new place, an unseen view we had not taken in before and so we began to explore the landscape we found.
The second instalment of improvised soundscape works from myself and Peter Maynard. Threshold is a continuation of the same process that created Dust. We would set up our equipment and play for hours.
Intimate piano, treated field recordings and sparse electronics combine to create a sound journey through the cultural landscape of Europe.
Found . Assemble continues to explore my obsession for processing found sounds and field recordings and then setting them against quiet piano phrases and lower case electronics. In my recent work, I have become fascinated with the, often quiet, sounds of activity within large interior spaces - footsteps and talking or even whispering. I’ve recently found myself recording in, not only churches and cathedrals, but more unusual spaces such as train stations and tunnels. I have also been pushing the sound of the piano to exaggerate it’s more ‘mechanical’ tones - the ones we often try to hide. The wonderful sound of the hammers or the pedals. All inspiration to me.
Triptych in Blue is the latest installment from a music partnership that began in 1997 when Andrew Heath and Felix Jay, under the name Aqueuous, recorded the wonderful ambient album ‘Meeting the Magus’ with one of the founding fathers of ambient, Hans-Joachim Roedelius.
The collaboration between Anne Chris Bakker and Andrew Heath is overwhelmingly informed by both an open, minimal landscape and a love of process, allowing the sounds and music to form as you would unfold a map - each section revealing a new and uncharted vista. Texture and lower case, drifting drones, tones and fragile notes create music that hangs in the air - suspended in time and place.
Soundings continues Andrew Heath's exploration and manipulation of found sounds and field recordings to create textures and pointillist staccato notes of sound which are then set against quiet piano phrases and shimmering electronic treatments.
Softer and darker, yet more open and minimal than previous releases, Evenfall continues Andrew Heath’s fascination of, and experimentation with, ‘found sounds’ and treated field recordings, around which he weaves shimmering electronics and delicately phrased piano. He has expanded to include two new elements in his musical armoury, guitar and tape manipulation, which he balances with sounds as diverse as the clicking of electric fences and the drone of a ship’s engines. The results are magical: filigree piano work, dictaphone tape textures from another age and soaring cloud guitar combine to create otherworldly beauty.
Motion is an innovative new album by sound artists Toby Marks and Andrew Heath. Although the pair have collaborated on individual tracks and shows before, this is the first album they have worked on together.
