From the frozen wastes of New England comes Snowbeasts – aka Raab Codec, Component Recordings label head honcho with contributing vocals from Elizabeth Virosa of Pattern Behavior – with a sound like dire warnings from the future or a strange memory from the past. Snowbeasts music is haunting, charting soundscapes vague and unfamiliar while hinting at buried dreams frozen in time. Drawing on a variety of sources, Snowbeasts excels at creating enigmatic portraits of unknown regions and forgotten worlds. Anything is fair game and nothing is forbidden. Forget chopped and screwed: Snowbeasts songs are chipped, sawn and shattered apart into new sonic shapes. Single instruments are torn from their normal uses, modified and rebuilt into orchestras of sonic depth. Found sounds undergo transformation until their origins are forever obscured, their new forms revealing alien timbres. Vocal textures supplied by Ms. Virosa morph from choral chants into haunting drones and eerie sound forms. Textures are warped in the bowels of digital forges to become newly born, hammered from raw ones and zeros into weapons of sound. A few pieces develop subtle fuzzed-out post rockin accents as in the hypnotic and eerie “Howl.” Each track is magnificently dense, psych-acoustically trippy, utterly dark with some furiously sonic moments (as in the heavenly static sci-fi “Talons” or the minimal tense “The Hunt”). Some tracks such “Artifacts” admit a more viciously cerebral noisy electronic abstraction or more contemplative electronic scintillations as in the naturalistic “Under the ice”. From within a secret installation somewhere in Providence, Rhode Island, they create their haunting electronic soundscapes, blending a cinematic ambience with darkly moving harmonies embedded in revolving, powerful modular squelches and lumbering beats. “Survival” is their 3rd release for M-Tronic and a masterpiece born from the deepest, darkest and most arcane experimental textures. ‘Interference’ sounds like the invasion of angry metal waspsdriven by merciless beats and bass. “Weight of The World’s” loping intensity conjures up images of line dancing zombies and robots jittering and jerking across the dancefloor. “Change” uses a minimalist approach to create a dark, cavernous space for drums to pound and screech in under Virosa’s wafting choral drones and Codec’s skilled synthetic tremblings.
