Exact Audio Copy V1.0 beta 3 from 29. August 2011 REM GENRE Alternative Exact Audio Copy V1.0 beta 3 from 29. August 2011 REM GENRE Alternative Jagwar Ma's debut album, Howlin, takes the listener on a trip back through the alternative rock of the '90s, making stops along the way to delve into shoegaze, baggy dance jams, spaced-out psychedelic dream pop, bedroom electronic, and even the much maligned big beat sound. The genius move the duo makes is that when they come back from their trip they only brought back the good parts and none of the elements like "Funky Drummer" breakbeats or grunge guitars that would have dated the project. Instead, Howlin sounds both like a really, really good modern pop album and a brilliant update of the '90s which, had it been released in 1992, would have knocked some sense into groups like Happy Mondays and Chapterhouse. Back then, the chief architect of the group's sound, Jono Ma, would have been hailed as an innovator and borderline genius; vocalist Gabriel Winterfield would have been in demand as a collaborator for every dance music producer in the game; and the record's mixer, Ewan Pearson, would have been buried under a deluge of requests for his magic touch. In 2013, all those things should happen too, as all three combine to make something very special. Howlin is full of inventive sounds and super-hooky pop songs, with little moments of surprising beauty and breezy fun sprinkled throughout the record too. Whether bouncing happily on rubbery beats ("That Loneliness"), sinking into some murky funk ("The Throw"), hitting the dancefloor for a hip house workout ("Four"), doing their best to rehabilitate big beat clichés ("Man I Need"), or writing an almost painfully pretty electronic ballad to close out the record ("Backwards Berlin"), the group keeps listeners on their toes and in their happy place. The variety of styles the group tries on for size is surprising to be sure, but what's truly impressive is that they nail everything they try and, more importantly, give everything a consistent feel that makes every track sound like a Jagwar Ma track first and foremost. That's not easy for a band to do, but these guys make it sound like it was no big deal. They have enough musical skill, production smarts, and melodic grace to make you forget this is their first album. Howlin is good enough to make you forget most of the bands they were influenced by too, as it both embraces and somehow transcends the '90s in a flash of sound and vision.

Для этого потребовались приглашенные гости вроде Stella Mozgawa ( Warpaint, The xx), Ewan Pearson (Ladytron, Depeche Mode, The Rapture, Goldfrapp, The Chemical Brothers) и James Ford (Simian Mobile Disco). Ставка на втором альбоме больше сделана на мелодику (при общей сохранности звукового гипнотизма). Возможно, все дело в том, что группа "турила" вместе с земляками - Tame Impala.
The dreamy, wide-screen '90s revivalism of Jagwar Ma's first album Howlin' gained the Australian duo a devoted fan base that bridged generations. People who lived through the baggy, dancefloor-friendly psych pop era of the actual '90s found much to love in the epically danceable tunes; younger people who may not know Northside from Flowered Up responded to the expansive, post-Animal Collective mashup of guitars, synths, and soaring vocals. Plus, the album had a large number of brilliant tunes. After touring the world and taking time to record a follow-up, 2016's Every Now & Then, the duo of producer/instrumentalist Jono Ma and vocalist Gabriel Winterfield succeed in copying the successful aspects of their debut while still keeping things sounding fresh and throwing in a few new tricks here and there, like the techno breakdowns on "Slipping" or the heavy modern pop chorus of "Batter Up." Throughout the album they amp up the dreaminess, pump up the hooks, and generally make it sound like every song was recorded live on-stage in front of a stadium full of people, even as they connect with each individual member of the throng. Tracks like the boundlessly energetic "Say What You Feel" or the swooningly sweet "Ordinary" have the kind of choruses it's easy to imagine a huge crowd singing along with, or a kid under a pair of headphones silently grooving along to. Balanced with these huge arena pleasers that make up the bulk of the record are tracks like "Loose Ends," which has a deeper, stickier rhythmic sense and the kind of slinky strut that the best Happy Mondays (or in the case of "Give Me a Reason," a little bit of Stereo MC's) flair. No matter the mood or approach, the band fill every inch of the arrangements with ringing guitars, sweeping keyboards, squelching synths, and Winterfield's soaring vocals. It's basically the same thing they did on Howlin', a little slicker and a little more varied, but none the worse for it. In fact, there are times when it sounds like they come close to perfecting the template they came up with on Howlin' as tracks like "O B I" and "Colours of Paradise" sound like laser-focused versions of songs from their debut. Every Now & Then is the best kind of second album, one that improves on the first one without throwing away any of the elements that made it good. They may have to change things up soon, but for now, Jagwar Ma have again tapped into the '90s revival and come up with just about the best result possible. Gabriel Winterfield - lead vocals, guitar, loops
