Even more, I used to hate my commute. An hour by subway what would take 20 minutes by car if I had owned one. Everyday I walked to the subway, switching lines in town and took a 2nd line to the end. I dreamed that one day the subway would take me past the last stop, just keep going. Or maybe, I would end up somewhere else, somewhere new. Music was my salvation, my soundtrack, those two hours each day. With or without music the commute was a score I listened to countless times. On two occasions, for posterity, I recorded the commute. Now it's 2009 and my life has changed so much.
I look back into the dust of times and accompany a soundtrack to those days of travel. This was my commute. The Process: Commute is an experimental concept album about commuting. The album is the length of my commute in 2006. I recorded my commute four times (2 out and 2 back), overlapping all four audio recordings into one 68 minute sound collage. This soundscape became the foundation of the composition and the subtle ambiance heard throughout Commute. Tones were designated to various sounds; watery piano for people & chimes, dulcimer drones for cars, drums for rain & subway tracks, low drones for subway cars, and synths for general ambient noise. The structure was entirely in the hands of the field recording collage. Originally released in three sections, I wanted to keep Commute as one continuous track for the re-release. Parts of my wedding were documented with field recordings.
This included pre-ceremony unpacking / chatter / music, post-ceremony celebration / music, and a hike up a mountain.
This material became the album’s skeleton.
The guitar and French Horn were exstracted from the original field recordings. I decided to honor the original rural conditions for playing music at my wedding and record the release with acoustic instruments only.
The result is a group of dusty organic pieces that sonically represent a mountainous hike in mist and the day’s memories, as far as weather conditions will let you go.

The grand structure of the cosmic stage can be found within microscopic particles and on the sub-atomic level.
Scaling by default becomes fractal in design. Microcosm is a collection of early ambient works spanning release between 2003 and 2004.
These works were originally released as Microvast, under the one time alias X:F System.
Microcosm takes Microvast as a starting point; completely re-working, remixing, and ushering this era of recordings to a place that is decidedly Off Land.
The end result is something that is both familiar and unfamiliar.
Microcosm is a nod to Microvast and early Off Land releases, as much as it a progression of the more cinematic side of Off Land. The concept with Microcosm is to create an album of music that both microscopic and cosmic in scale.
Like a microcosm, the album is a confined, enclosed ecosystem of sound.
Like a macrocosm is an ever-spanning journey.

It is a musical discussion of time and memories.
Some days in my past play out as vivid movies, others only fragments of color.
One particular May 2nd falls under the former, while countless others are only vague notions of existence.
It is this idea of memories and these points in time surviving at different resolutions that went into shaping the sound and movement within “May Second”. “May Second” is a loose collaboration between Tim Dwyer (Off Land) and Ross Baker (formally Second Thought).
The track is based upon Ross Baker's composition “May” (secondthought.bandcamp.com/track/may).
The original composition was then reworked, rewritten, and re-imagined for “May Second”.
The end result is a piece of music that retains the similar feelings evoked by the original all the while entering new territory.

I’m Tim Dwyer, and I make music as Off Land. I am based in Boston, Massachusetts. I’ve been creating ambient electronic music for the last ten years as Off Land. It has been an incredible journey so far. I just started playing live shows as Off Land, last year. It’s not only opened up new creative paths for my music to take but has been a great experience meeting many like-minded local musicians and music lovers. Aside from music, I enjoy riding my bicycle around and work a day job as a video game designer. In 1996 I discovered electronic music. A couple years later I got my hands on some basic MIDI and audio editing tools. I completely fell in love with the concept of using technology to create emotive music. It took almost ten years of experimentation before I came up with Off Land though. I tend to gestate songs and albums for years before I’m ready. Tell us a bit about the mix.
Astral Drive is a mix to reflect some of the music I was listening to and making during the creation and release of my album Afterglow which came out on Carpe Sonum this year. If you’re going on a drive, it’s always best to take some friends along. I made sure to include some of my musical friends on this mix, such as Intl. Debris (who I have collaborated with), Segue (who has remixed me), and Louis Haiman (label mate on Stasis Recordings), etc. All tracks were edited and mixed in Reaper. I make all my mix sets using this DAW. Afterglow is about how light, in all it’s forms, travels through space and time. This mix carries that theme in the sense that it is more of a transit along a single beam of light, traveling as you take in the surroundings. An ‘ambient road trip’ if you will. What’s coming up on the horizon for Off Land? I have my first cassette release, which is out July 19th on No Problema Tapes. It is an album of long electronic drones mixed with field recordings, and manipulated piano textures. Also I should note that 2016 is my tenth anniversary as Off Land. Even though we've just recently discovered him, through his excellent "Slow Waves" album released on Chilean heavyweight imprint No Problema Tapes, Tim is a rather prolific musician, active for more than 10 years. Honing his musical skills and shaping his musical vision, Off Land has released over 25 materials to date, exploring ambient, meditation music, drone and more. You might call "Out World" an EP, but through its 5 songs, Tim Dwyer's latest material is an absolute trip, crafting an entire virtual world through uplifting synth pads, pulsing drones, intricate textures and various field recordings, resulting in a very peaceful and introspective listen full of wondrous moments. Truly, this is what our label is all about and we are thankful to help release this gem of an album.
