Sound Tribe Sector 9 (STS9) is an instrumental band whose sound is based heavily on instrumental rock and electronic music, funk, jazz, drum and bass, psychedelia, and hip hop, originating in Georgia, United States. Self-described as "post-rock dance music," the band mixes standard live rock instrumentation with electronics, favoring group rhythm over individual solos. STS9 has released 11 albums, two remixed albums (Artifact: Perspectives and Peaceblaster: Make it Right Remixes), and multiple live DVDs (Live as Time Changes, Axe The Cables, and various live performances) on their own label, 1320 Records. STS9 has toured the US nationally and internationally, ranking among Pollstar Magazine's list of top-grossing touring acts, with a heavy presence in the music festival circuit. Some of their recent past accomplishments include headlining stages at some of the country's major music festivals (including Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, Electric Forest, and Suwanee Hulaween), playing for sold-out concert venues around the country (playing as both an acoustic set-up in opera houses and as an electronic act in amphitheaters), performing with the likes of Jay-Z in Denver of 2010, running an independent record label, and using their voice as a platform for change, along with raising significant amounts of money towards activism efforts. STS9 is also known for pushing musical boundaries, mixing different music influences and sounds by using both acoustic and electronic means. There some where in the deep dirty south, under the sun, sprawled out on the grass and curb, we were in a collective deep thought; vibing, talking about music. Pete asked, "whatever happened to that song..." ...as I took a moment to remember the last time I'd heard it...Zach said, "Why don't we release some of that music?" and BLAM! It was on. A week later, this... What you hold in your hand is a compilation of music created and recorded at home. Over these past couple of years we've been learning, experimenting...thinking of new methods of composing, trying to open to the infinite possibilities of creation. One thing we've realized is that our strength as one, as a band, relies on our strength as individuals. Within each of us are different yet relative experiences that are spoken through drums, strings, synths and machines. The following is a mix of tracks composed by the members of STS9. This album is different, though relative to what you might associate with us. Some songs are collaborations. Most are reflections of a soul or lone producer. Basically, we couldn't wait...as we write this we are in the process of recording our first studio album in three years. What this night encompasses is one of, if not the most flawless STS9 event in the bands decade plus history. The entire show was played, for the most part, sans all “electric” gear including the common stage instrumentation of laptops our fans have grown quite accustomed to. To say the event was a hit is an understatement. It was a night legends are made of. Over the years we’ve had many different practice spaces. From basements to barns to makeshift rooms red-tagged by the city. In February of 2017 we moved into a new studio that truly feels like home. The ability to record ourselves live, to make it feel and sound like we're on stage in the magic, has been a dream come true. It's inspired us to be more prolific, to record everything and share more of our experience with our closest fans… Wave Spell is STS9 in its rawest form. Where we don’t talk about what we want to play, we just try and tap in to the moment and let the music happen. It's a conversation where we speak solely with our instruments. A time where we're completely free to explore. This series is dedicated to our belief that music is one of the most powerful forces in nature. It casts its spell through waveforms carrying sound and light, moving energy and frequencies through our mind, body and soul. Thank you for inspiring our Wave Spell. The band’s tour stopped through The Crescent City in the fall of 2008 just over 3 years after Hurricane Katrina left her indelible mark. What they found was a spectacular collision of failure and triumph. A catastrophic break-down of a system that often moralized perfection and protection being held up, only, by the ineradicable love and will of it’s people to look forward and attempt to make things right. During a day off the members of STS9 had arranged to help deliver food which they had collected, with the help of their generous fans, at each stop of their tour. The band were welcomed with open arms and even invited in for dinner to one of the many trailers so many called home. There they met families, friends and neighbors all sharing in one unfortunate common denominator. To say the experience was humbling is an under statement. It was life changing. It was with this visit STS9 began to manifest what we are so proud to announce today. An example of people helping people because we can, and quite simply, should. A effort that honors the people of a city so rooted in music, art and celebration and reminds us all there is still hope and determination to complete what we all know needs finishing.
