Spurz - Effigy (4:06) After contributing to our “Rude Haus 2012 - Forever” compilation, Spurz steps into the light with his debut EP ‘Spirit Functions’. Angular, punishing drum workouts serve as a the record’s foundation, which is then dressed in crystalline synth work with haunting samples expertly draped throughout. “Why Aren’t You Kneeling?” is at the head of the release, building from a skittering of crickets into a chant-driven sub pusher, channelling tribal house spirits from bygone warehouse raves. “Horizon Drip” is a lean, stripped down drum track, laced with elemental echoes of vintage hardcore, with it’s interspersed breaks and rave sirens. “Effigy” rounds out the EP, with a pulsing broken kick and shattering glass growing into brash militant techno, with razor-edged white noise stabs and heavy 4/4 drums in tow. artwork by Borealis mastered by Réal Cardinal released April 25, 2014 ----------------------- foobar2000 1.3.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 ![]() 01. Gumsmile - Bact (picoVolt Remix) (3:24) 24Bit Release While Soft Absolve may serve as Gumsmile's first cohesive step into the electronic music landscape, he’s no stranger to visceral heaviness, having spent years playing guitar in several hardcore outfits. This may help to frame the space in which Soft Absolve exists — bristly, gnashing synths clash against relentlessly pummeling percussion and throbs of bass, while demented vocal snippets weave around uneasily. "Popped In" pushes and pulls you around, disintegrating at points to near noise, only to crash in again like a machine — clicking, whirring, and pulsating. "Watch the Phonies" takes a more direct aim at the dance floor — staccato clacking, threatening voices, and saw basses hang firmly to a 4/4 framework that only lets up to create space for its anti-euphoric pads to speak. "Bact" feels eerily alive — insect-like chirps and clicks move around the listener while thudding kick drums act as a heartbeat amidst a horror film soundscape. Soft Absolve features some familiar Drama Hands names on remix duties — Boogie Howser completely flips "Popped In" on its head, taming it with his signature lush, dreamy 2-step sound. Spurz’s 'Teardown' remix of "Watch the Phonies" adds 90s tribal house sensibilities, readying it for a warehouse space, and picoVolt reworks the jutting angles of "Bact" into a breathy techno roller that stays true to the original's organic message. released May 27, 2016 Gumsmile soundcloud.com/gumsmile Boogie Howser soundcloud.com/cptnkirk Spurz soundcloud.com/spurz picoVolt soundcloud.com/picovolt Artwork by Jesse Somfay soundcloud.com/jessesomfay Mastered by Liar soundcloud.com/liarinth foobar2000 1.3.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 ![]() 01. Boogie Howser - Timelapse Rainforest (GHIBLI Remix) (2:10) 24Bit Release There isn't a succinct way to describe the multifaceted sound of Edmonton's Boogie Howser. Drawing from a wide array of influences and palettes — jazz, house, footwork, hip-hop, experimental beats — Boogie weaves familiar sonic concepts into distinctly fresh and lush aural tapestries. Previous releases on Calgary's Close to Modern and California's Black Marble Collective served to establish Howser's unique voice, and his Tidal Haze release on Drama Hands sees him further exploring the club space. "Ocean as Her Backdrop" opens the record — a woozy nod to classic house, full of dreamy pads and a soaring gospel vocal at the track's peak. "Ice Coast" oscillates between breaks, ethereal synths, and rolling percussion, never staying in one space for too long. "Peripheral Greyscale" finds Boogie in his element — crafting expansive, pulsing beats and fluttering atmospherics while flirting with half time and 4/4 structures. "Purple Clouds in July" carries this sound deeper — a syrupy track whose lulling plucks feel like fogged up windows. "Timelapse Rainforest", a bubbling take on 2-step, conjures a sun-kissed coastal drive, while the final cut, "Shawn Colvin", dissolves into abstract soundscapes which float beneath a warbled horn section. On the remix front — Hood Joplin puts lush pad stabs and a footwork spin on "Peripheral Greyscale", Drama Hands resident Gumsmile gives a tense club-ready focus to "Purple Clouds in July", and Manicure Records boss GHIBLI adds extra champagne bubbles to "Timelapse Rainforest", morphing it into a hypersonic disco-tinged anthem. released May 27, 2016 Boogie Howser soundcloud.com/cptnkirk Hood Joplin soundcloud.com/hood-joplin Gumsmile soundcloud.com/gumsmile GHIBLI soundcloud.com/gh1bl1 Artwork by Jesse Somfay soundcloud.com/jessesomfay Mastered by Liar soundcloud.com/liarinth foobar2000 1.3.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 ![]() 01. picoVolt - Geisha Screens (4:14) 02. picoVolt - Blood Moon Eclipse (4:34) 03. picoVolt - 49 Transformations (6:59) 04. picoVolt - Geisha Screens (Gumsmile 'Rare Games' Remix) (4:09) 05. picoVolt - Blood Moon Eclipse (Lamer Remix) (4:34) 06. picoVolt - 49 Transformations (Boogie Howser Remix) (2:54) 24Bit Release picoVolt originally made his Drama Hands debut as BodhiFunk on our Rude Haus 2012–Forever compilation. While the names may have changed, the weighty electro abstractions remain the same, with Growth Codex showcasing the hardware disciple's latest artistic bloom. "Geisha Screens" is mechanical stomper — snaking cymbals wash in and out while barbed synths cut deep swathes throughout the track. "Blood Moon Eclipse" is a tense ride with early industrial overtones and gradually mutating rhythms that never stay dormant for long. "49 Transformations" is a sprawling, metallic construction that serves equal duties as a dystopian soundscape and a warehouse destroyer. A trio of remixes round out Growth Codex — Gumsmile adds his signature vocal sampling and taut structures to "Geisha Screens", repurposing it into an effective club tool. Edmonton newcomers Lamer tackle "Blood Moon Eclipse", taming it slightly with an exercise in techno minimalism. "49 Transformations" gets an intense footwork treatment from Boogie Howser, filled with digital stabs set against Howser's signature lush pads. released May 27, 2016 picoVolt soundcloud.com/picovolt Gumsmile soundcloud.com/gumsmile Lamer soundcloud.com/dramahands Boogie Howser soundcloud.com/cptnkirk Artwork by Jesse Somfay soundcloud.com/jessesomfay foobar2000 1.3.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 ![]() 01. Sam Lucia (2:17) 24Bit Release After several years spent establishing herself as a fixture of Edmonton's underground club scene, Manicure Records beat queen and carepackage boss Hood Joplin graces Drama Hands with her debut EP #75FFA1. The title track starts off the record — a chimey roller that envelopes you in warm tipsy pads and dub echoes while bubbling rhythms carry the track along. "Audrey Hepburn" is a wintry cinematic soundscape with elements of hip-hop and footwork mixed in. On "Hood Joplin Type Beat" she strips everything back, creating an ominous low-end creature reminiscent of early minimal dubstep born in dark London clubs. "TYBG" is a calming send up to the Based God that moves past like a gentle stream as mellow keys make quick cameos before dissolving away. Tides features Sam Lucia — one half of Vancouver's SO LOKI — who adds his linguistic dexterity to HJ's frame of tactical synth work and knocking percussion. released June 10, 2016 Hood Joplin soundcloud.com/hood-joplin Sam Lucia soundcloud.com/sam-lucia Artwork by Somfay soundcloud.com/somfay Mastering by Liar soundcloud.com/liarinth foobar2000 1.3.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 ![]() 01. Lamer - Muttardation (picoVolt Remix) (4:02) 24Bit Release A culmination of years split equally between djing in basements and playing in hardcore bands, Lamer is comprised of Gumsmile and Drama Hands auteur j. d. Rhodes. A tongue-in-cheek poke at their home city of Edmonton, Cordial Misery serves as the debut outing for the techno duo. The malefic, siren-esque bass and thudding kick drum of "Blight Ave" set the tone for the EP — as haunting pads swell, a creepy lead line snakes in and a detached voice mutters in your ear. "Peelerz" serves as the EP's heaviest track — though it begins with nothing more that a hi-hat and a morphing 303, it works its way into a 4/4 stomper with a heavy rolling bass line and more unsettling voices. Minimalism is king in "Muttardation" — from the understated yet effective percussion to the cheeky organ that would fit perfectly in any arcade game's jungle level. Inner Child steps up first on remix duties — his take on "Blight Ave" is a belter, extending the original's vocal sample into a terrifying breakdown before it all comes hammering back in. Spurz's 'Club Reduction' of "Peelerz" begins with an electro house rework of the original bassline before evolving into a noisy surger for the after hours set. picoVolt adds his trademark analog attack to "Muttardation", attaching a pulsating boomerang bass and highly effective breaks. released June 10, 2016 Lamer soundcloud.com/dramahands Inner Child soundcloud.com/theinnerchild Spurz soundcloud.com/spurz picoVolt soundcloud.com/picovolt Artwork by Somfay soundcloud.com/jessesomfay Mastering by Liar soundcloud.com/liarinth foobar2000 1.3.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 ![]() 01. Tigerwing - Cold Hands (Yung Dutch 160 Edit) (3:42) 06. Tigerwing - Tell Me (Lamer Remix) (6:00) 24Bit Release Calgary's Tigerwing is a musical force to behold — performer, vocalist, producer; equally deft in all — she creates powerful, provocative art and we are thrilled to present Black Light / White Lies. "Abraca-Bye" kicks things off — a visceral 808 anthem with the male-dominated music scene in its crosshairs as tense synths ride on top of plunging basslines and vindictive double time switch ups. "Cold Hands" is a teetering slow jam built on swirling, hazy synths which lace themselves amidst lyrics of cautious physicality, while bells circle delicately around your head space. "Tell Me" starts as a bit of sparse piano and drums and quickly grows into a dynamic showcase of Tigerwing's signature vocal arrangement and manipulation, with her voice flitting and darting out from a chorus of one. Drama Hands resident Spurz returns on remix duties, giving "Abraca-Bye" a harrowing, frenetic footwork refix. Calgary duo Yung Dutch put a pulsing, cybernetic twist on "Cold Hands", welding on some punishing sub work in the process. Edmonton's Lamer take the driving 4/4 feel of "Tell Me" and run with it, replacing most of the original elements with moody pads that slowly evolve amidst the pair's trademark minimalist percussion. released June 10, 2016 Tigerwing tigerwing.bandcamp.com Spurz soundcloud.com/spurz Yung Dutch soundcloud.com/barnaby-bennett soundcloud.com/sinistarr Lamer digi.dramahands.club/album/cordial-misery-dh007 Artwork by Somfay soundcloud.com/somfay Mastering by Liar soundcloud.com/liarinth foobar2000 1.3.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 ![]() 01. Spurz - Celeste (Children of Euphoria Remix) (5:18) 24Bit Release Spurz follows up his debut Drama Hands release, Spirit Functions, with In the Bright Light of Flares — further building on his uniquely dark and heavy sound. "LeaveU" starts off the record — a fast paced heavy-hitter that hearkens back to early grime, with barrages of punchy kicks and pixelated video game synths laying the groundwork for the track's soaring vocal sample. "Marred Linguistics" is a minimal dubstep roller, purpose-built for pitch black raves with thick walls of sound — swirling synths drone, build, then drop out, giving way to cold stabs, reverberated horns and double-time rhythms. Lastly there's "Celeste", a deconstructed nod to early hardcore and trance that rounds out the record — lo-fi breaks push and pull the tempo as rave sirens drift in and out, gently giving way to an ethereal feminine presence. Also featured is an all Vancouver lineup of remixers — RBMA alumnus Jade Statues 'Pan Flute Regurgitation' edit of "LeaveU" blows apart the original, adding extra artillery for the dance. Chelsea Grimm adds his signature warm synths to "Marred Linguistics", giving the remix a skittering 2-step flavour, while the mysterious Children of Euphoria pulls "Celeste" from the past into the present, turning it into an aggressive, breaks laden DnB stomper. released June 17, 2016 Spurz soundcloud.com/spurz Jade Statues soundcloud.com/jadestatues Chelsea Grimm soundcloud.com/chelsea_grimm Children of Euphoria soundcloud.com/children-of-euphoria Artwork by Somfay soundcloud.com/somfay Mastering by Liar soundcloud.com/liarinth foobar2000 1.3.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 ![]() 01. Children of Euphoria - Same Ol' Thing (Alex M Remix) (5:29) 24Bit Release Children of Euphoria is a mysterious musical collective started by E. Childs, a former Belgian Formula 1 racer whose obsession with breakneck speed is imbued in the collective's music, though it is created by of a revolving door of producers — E. Childs states, "no one is Children of Euphoria, we are all children of euphoria." "Bibimbap" commences with dripping tribalistic chants and pitched breaks which abruptly give way to cavernous pads and the echoes of 303 basslines. "Ditz" is a bubbling drum workout with ping-pong bass alongside classic house touches courtesy of Chicago native @heartbeat_s who guests on the track. "Let's Ride" serves up acid house and footwork elements at a rapid pace, never yielding even as airy vocals glide in on a wave of washed out cymbals. "Burn Bright" channels early rave and hardcore elements, with glass synths droning and pulsing through clanging breakbeats. "Same Ol' Thing" ends the record on a high note — an anthemic, jazzy footwork number with punchy bass and vocal chops in tow. Cameron Traxxx brings the tempo down on "Let's Ride", crafting a cut of classic house around the vocal sample — purpose-built for twilight rooftop parties. Vancouver's Phate takes "Ditz" to the underground — a sparse, effective house flip with a descending bassline set to test any system. Cyber Spa master Baby Blue rips and tears at the threads of "Bibimbap", reimagining it as a churning, throbbing cybernetic entity. Alex M transfigures "Same Ol' Thing", throttling back the tempo to reveal a bouncy bit of warm house. released June 17, 2016 Children of Euphoria soundcloud.com/children-of-euphoria Cameron Traxxx soundcloud.com/camerontraxxx Phate soundcloud.com/phateofficial Baby Blue soundcloud.com/gutted-angel Alex M soundcloud.com/alexm_music Artwork by soundcloud.com/somfay Mastering by soundcloud.com/liarinth foobar2000 1.3.5 / Замер динамического диапазона (DR) 1.1.1 ![]() 01. Full of precision percussion work and undeniable grooves informed by a decade-long DJ career — many at the helm of Edmonton's stellar REFUGE events — Family Friendly is a seamless mix of house and techno that we are very excited to bring to the booth and the dance floor. "No Life" starts off the EP with a healthy dose of Chicago influenced house flavor, as synths roll and build around the track's signature vocal snippet and staccato plucks. Fast forward a few hours later when most of the lights are off and the function is jumping and you arrive at "Something About It" — shimmering highs swirl around as the low-end gives the system a work out, and an arpeggiated lead beckons the freaks to the floor. Rounding out the release is the Autobahn-ready "Furthest Outpost", a true techno stomper that howls and flutters as mechanical drums tick along like a finely tuned engine. First up on remixes — Edmonton’s Eidolon reshapes "No Life" into a slightly heavier cut, reworking the vocal and weaving it amidst newly crafted shapes. Drama Hands regular Gumsmile flips "Something About It" into stripped down club track, with hard thudding drums and his signature skittering percussion work, while techno duo Lamer filter "Furthest Outpost" through a lens of tasteful 90s nostalgia while keeping the driving energy of the original intact. released December 9, 2016 Extra soundcloud.com/1extra Eidolon soundcloud.com/milanbjelic Gumsmile soundcloud.com/gumsmile Lamer digi.dramahands.club/album/cordial-misery-dh007 Artwork by Somfay soundcloud.com/somfay Mastering by Allmostt allmosttmastering.com foobar2000 1.2.5 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 ![]() 01. A scholar of the underground whose initial infatuation with the unabashed chart trash of the early aughts never faded, Bump connects the dots between raw house, vintage rave, sleazy L.A. disco and pure pop. The phenomenally talented Jinting lends her incredible voice to “Church Is Closing” and “Sink or Swim”, while Drama Hands alumni Extra, Boogie Howser and Heartbeat(s) step up to handle remix duties on the album.
