One Dove's Breakdown EP features five mixes of the song "Breakdown." It is one of the highlights of the brilliant Morning Dove White record. Two of the mixes of "Breakdown" available on the EP turned up on the album. The glittering "Radio Mix was remixed by Stephen Hague and shows the band at their most straightforward and poppy. Dot Allison sounds positively blissful as she swoons her way through the sad lyrics. The "Cellophane Boat Mix" as remixed by William Orbit is almost as glossily wonderful and featured more moody, dubby breakdowns including an acoustic guitar break that sounds lifted right off of Primal Scream's "Loaded." The other mixes of "Breakdown" are "William Orbit's Stereo Odyssey" and "Stereo Edit," which is a shortened version of his "Stereo Odyssey." All three of the Orbit mixes are remarkably similar, making one wish that they had brought in another mixer to get a more varied sound. Still, any misgiving one might have about the EP are tossed out the window when Andrew Weatherall's epic "Squire Black Dove Rides Out" mix begins to unspool. He breaks the song down to the bare essentials, adds some truly bin rattling bass, trashcan drums and some Augustus Pablo-style melodica. Weatherall was riding a peak of his creativity around this time and this mix is one of his masterpieces. It is definitely worth hunting down the disc just for his mix alone.

Also on the disc are the "Guitar Paradise Edit" which lops about half the running time off the original mix, and the 15-minute-long "Slam Mix" (mixed by Slam) which dispenses with the distorted guitar chords of the original and stretches the song out turning it into a dancefloor epic. The moment about halfway through where the song breaks down and returns with a four/four beat and squelchy house synths is a surprise and a great piece of remixing. Hunt this disc down if only for this fine remix.

Glasgow, Scotland-based trio, who caught the nation's imagination in 1993 with their mellow musical depths. The members were Ian Carmichael (b. 1 June 1960, Glasgow, Scotland), Jim McKinven (b. David James McKinven, Glasgow, Scotland) and former chemical engineering student Dot Allison (b. Dorothy Elliot Allison, 17 August 1969, Edinburgh, Scotland). McKinven had been in an early incarnation of the Bluebells (rehearsal only), but was best known for his stint in Altered Images. Carmichael owned Toad Hall Studios, engineering or producing for many Glaswegian acts. The trio made their first public appearance at the Rock Garden, Queens Street, Glasgow, in August 1991. The fact that Andrew Weatherall got involved attracted some initial attention, but there was more to One Dove than merely another of his side projects. They had already broken into the rave scene's elite with the single "Fallen", prior to their collaboration. It was released on Soma Records, before the band had changed their name from their original selection, Dove. However, litigation followed from representatives of Supertramp (the band had, inadvertently, used a sample from an Italian house record which in turn had sampled the prog-rockers). They met Weatherall in Rimini, Italy in 1991. After he agreed to work with them there was some discussion in the press that One Dove's debut album would signal another landmark episode, à la Primal Scream's Screamadelica, but this was perhaps over-optimistic. It was at least a solid, musically enthralling collection conveying One Dove's biggest influence: King Tubby and Jamaican dub music. They disbanded in 1996, with Allison going on to release an acclaimed solo album in 1999.
