Twisted's global chillage breakbeat sibling has excelled itself this time. Florian Seriot, the bodhisattva-like brain behind Toires, has been trekking in the hills of Morocco. He takes the sounds he found - chanting, insects, ambience - and fuses them with a very personal, almost spiritual, pattern of contemplative breakbeat that's a joy to experience. The album has a very fluid feel, and despite threatening to get very new-agey it steers clear of the abundant incense, hundred dollar buddhas and dangling quartz vibe by having some bloody clever musical twists and turns. So while it's perfect backdrop for your confused late night struggles with a rizla, background music it really ain't. It's difficult to get right into this track by track, because one strongly suspects that this isn't the idea - it weighs in at just shy of 50 minutes and is best listened to as one long, reflective, global consciousness composition. To say any more would just be filler. This is truly something different, and if you're after some intelligent chillage then this is just what you're looking for. It has everything you'd expect from a chilled CD, and bags more besides - intelligence, atmosphere, experimentation, and beauty that literally overflows. Sanati is a strong contender for downtempo album of the year. R. Carlos Nakai has become more than a leading Native American musician; these days he's virtually a brand name. And this time around, he's especially ambitious, for Fourth World is nothing less than a symphony, backed by virtually a full orchestra, while his native flute soars like an eagle over the sound, an oasis of beauty and calm. But serenity has always been a hallmark of his music -- here it's simply offered in a slightly different setting, one that works magnificently, its grandeur muted, more like a pillow of sound for the flute. Throughout Nakai's work there's been a peacefulness, a serenity, and while his music is first and foremost Native American, he possesses all the qualities of a first-rate new age artist, as on the restful "Meditations on Dinetah." This work is evidence of how much he continues to grow as an artist. The calm center remains, but he keeps doing more and more with his music and the richness of sounds here offers the perfect opportunity for meditation. Since the end of the 80s, he has been busy with performing his music at various festivals all over the world, either solo or accompanied by an orchestra. His music distils sounds born from a fusion sometimes close to Ambient, to ethnic melodies from around the world, and to rhythmic elements oscillating between Trip-hop, Break - Beat, Dub and Rock. By inviting instrumentalists and musicians in his studio, from Caucuses, Morocco or Pacific Origin, Toires created a sonorous universe coming out from a trip notebooks as it shows in his double album Qued Sanati. A mistress piece of his work inspired by the sunrise in the desert. Toires puts his signature in his fifth opus, Yasmina, in co-production with Mahana Bay Label. A double album composed in Morocco, with modern and contrasted sounds. A kaleidoscope of remixed works in an astonishing variety of musical styles, accompanied of a 'best of live' recorded between 1999 and 2006. A long discography of ingenious ethno-electronic pieces and his remarkable talent have led him, during the last decade, to compose or remix singles for, or with, Natacha Atlas, Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Prem Joshua, Claude Challe, Irina Makhailova, Gravity Co., Gator Dash, etc...
