This turned out to be a more-or-less unusable musical instrument and it was to be another 10 years before he got his hands on a ‘proper’ synth – a monophonic Korg MS10.
As a member of the Bath-based band Demented Stoats, Martin took the Korg to its first festival (Stonehenge Free Festival) and played regularly with the Stoats until they disbanded.
Two of the band went on to join Hawkwind whilst Martin sought out the relative quiet of electronic music composition in the cellar of a flat in Manchester. As his synthesiser collection grew it became clear that he couldn’t play them all at the same time and so he tentatively entered the machine world of digital sequencing.
During the 1990s, Martin slowly entered the computer age and added digital sampling to his musical armoury.
It took a couple of brief sojourns to Goa before everything fell into place and the distinctive dr trippy sound was born.
Combining Indian vocals, the rhythms and resonance of dub reggae and a battery of synthesisers and effect units, the dr trippy sound caught the attention of Toby Marks (Banco de Gaia) who persuaded him to play his music outside of a cellar.
With a couple of Banco support slots in Camden and Birmingham, dr trippy’s music finally reached an audience and performances at festivals -including Glastonbury, Bearded Theory and Beautiful Days – were soon to follow.
‘Invasion by Osmosis’ is dr trippy’s first album and showcases the dubbier side of his music.
It is a difficult music to characterise. It is certainly dance music and if there was such a genre as Punjabi Swamp Music this album is it!

(5:00) After osmotically invading our consciousness with his first dose, dr trippy returns with ‘Bhang!’ - a new batch of his patented Punjabi swamp medicine that is guaranteed to get you dancing to the off-beat of the world. A riot of musical flavours, ‘Bhang!’ starts and finishes with trademark ‘trippy bhangra beats, and in between positively explodes with an eclectic blend of musical genres, all underpinned by the rhythms and resonance of dub, awash in Indian and Jamaican vocal samples, and fuelled by a battery of synths and effect units. Recent travels to Cambodia, Thailand and China are also evident in the global melting pot that is dr trippy’s style. Having built his own analogue synthesiser at the age of 14 and cut his live teeth with The Demented Stoats (with whom he most memorably played at Stonehenge Free Festival), the good doctor tentatively entered the machine world of digital sequencing and sampling in the early 90’s, with his musical endeavours influenced by trips to Goa and meeting Toby Marks (AKA Banco de Gaia). He released his first album ‘Invasion by Osmosis’ in 2014, and has followed that up with a trio of cunningly punned EP’s. Fewer Indian voices too, but more traditional Indian instruments. A smattering of Patois (and Russian rap!) supported by oodles of analogue synth and a soupcon of industrial percussion. The keen-eared amongst you may also notice some delta blues singing on the EP. The Punjab doesn’t have any swamps but the Southern US does. Re the title - All Cows Eat Grass is a mnemonic aid to learning the bass clef in music and, as it happens, bass takes a bigger role on this EP and the first four tracks are in the key of A, C, E and G respectively.
