Through organic layers of living, breathing orchestra (courtesy of the Moscow Studio Symphony Orchestra), and an eclectic arsenal of world music-influenced instrumentation, Earthside fashions an ever-changing sound that is equally engrossing alongside a work of cinematic art as it is resonating throughout a densely packed concert venue. A Dream In Static, the group’s conceptual mission statement, is a story of purposeful sacrifice and existential yearning told across sweeping instrumental movements, interwoven with adventurous vocal compositions featuring guest performances from premier voices across the rock and metal worlds. The inherently collaborative cross-continental project was recorded in Stockholm, Sweden under the watch of renowned producer and mix engineer David Castillo (Opeth, Katatonia, Bloodbath) and additional mix and mastering engineer Jens Bogren (Opeth, Soilwork, The Ocean, Devin Townsend). A Dream In Static (Self-Released) After even one casual listen to A Dream In Static, it’s impossible not to be wowed by this album. The Connecticut-based instrumental group is comprised of very impressive musicians who didn’t make things easy on themselves on their debut record. Featuring guest vocals from some of the best metal vocalists around in Daniel Tompkins (TesseracT), Bjorn Strid (Soilwork), and Lajon Witherspoon (Sevendust), working with The Moscow Studio Symphony Orchestra, and featuring production work from Europe’s best, this record was an massive undertaking that could crumble from the weight of expectations. It should surprise no one that A Dream In Static, sounds wonderful and presents one of the best examples of modern progressive music in recent memory. What should surprise is that despite the fact that this is the most impressive record you’re likely to hear all year, Earthside have nowhere to go from here but up. Unfortunately, that means that A Dream In Static is a excellent record that feels disappointing because it could have been a classic. Let me explain. The core musicians in Earthside are fantastic composers, as these songs have a great understanding of tone, weight, and dynamics. The longer the song, the more fleshed-out it feels, and the vocal-led tracks rarely feel like they’ve overstayed their welcome. When these four instrumentalists add in one of four excellent vocalists, Earthside steps up its game. If the band released all four of these tracks in an LP, it would be a shoe-in for the best record of the year. These songs showcase a band who has a mastery of modern progressive metal, taking hints from TesseracT, Katatonia, and Haken to create a sound that bridges the old and new prog styles. It’s epic in a way that isn’t overbearing, grand in a way that is equally ambitious and fun. For my money, “Mob Mentality” may go down as one of the best uses of a symphony in metal, and Lajon’s wonderful voice compliments the song perfectly. All of this excitement is, unfortunately, tempered by the other half of the record. Frankly, the instrumental songs just don’t hold up to the high standard of the rest of the album. It’s weird because three of the songs are good to great in their own right, but they lack a certain something that makes the other “half” of the record so fantastic. No, it’s not entirely the vocals. It sounds like Earthside is holding back a bit with the four instrumental songs, happy to craft impressive yet passable instru-metal. Interestingly, the shortest song on the record, “Entering the Light” is the weakest of the bunch, as it sounds like the band let Max ZT (performing the hammered dulcimer) do all the work, as the rest of the song is mediocre. I can’t state this enough: the instrumental portion of A Dream In Static is certainly fine (and quite great in parts), but the fact that it pales in comparison to the vocal portion of the record shows that maybe Earthside could use a vocalist to help them focus more. From the results, it’s clear that they can write some of the best progressive music around. It’s just unfortunate that the instrumental portion isn’t up to the high standard Earthside has set. With all that said, let’s not get it twisted. A Dream In Static is still one of the best progressive metal records in recent memory. The cross-continental project highlights the best of prog from around the world and features vocalists capable of carrying this grandiose music. If not for a relatively underwhelming instrumental portion of the record, Earthside could have released one of the best debuts in a long, long time. However, don’t sleep on this highly talented band. If this debut is any indication, the best is yet to come.
