The album’s title is a reference to the micro-filaments of a fungal mat, which allow trees and other plants to absorb nutrients and minerals from the soil that would otherwise be unavailable. Musically, this is a symbol of the details giving rise to the whole, and of the unseen unity in all things, especially in life. The album is very much inspired by fungus, both in an academic sense and in the shamanic, psilocybin-induced sense. The whole album is filled with sounds the artist recorded himself out in the woods, over the course of the past year. Each track has a subtle field recording layered beneath the mix, to evoke a specific sense of place. Lake Language contains samples of breaking ice and waves filling in the crunchy beatwork, which is layered with a warm liquid bassline and chopped acoustic instrumental melodies and textures. Blue Verve Vein (named for the artist’s favourite flower blue vervain) lays acoustic and electric guitars and vocals samples over jolting distorted drum patterns. Ice Age Trail begins with the sound of leopard seals, recorded in Antartica, and goes on to mix clipped beats with writhing synths and the organic tones of dulcimer and penny whistle. Stomata Spirit sources all of its melodic elements from an autoharp, its glitchy edits balanced against complex stuttering drum machine rhythms. Morel uses woodpecker sounds as the texture for the beat, and a loon call as the inspiration for the melody. Scattered amongst these beat-based organic electronica tracks are a collection of beatless ambient pieces which seamlessly blend acoustic and synthetic textures into gorgeously evocative cinematic soundscapes, featuring the artist’s own voice for the first time, processed in various ways. Skytree - Auryn (3:01) 24Bit release. I chose to create this EP as a way of changing up production sessions for the upcoming "Cirrus Sapiens" album. Making more pop cultural, light-hearted, short and simple music helped retain my clarity, imagination and vision for the album, which is deeply personal, immense and intricate in comparison. Like the album, it was all done from scratch, with no samples used in its production. The Neverending Story soundtrack, while iconic, always seemed like something that was virtually begging to be dusted off for the 21st century, with its vintage-yet-timeless electropop elements naturally fitting into the modern EDM aesthetic. After dreaming of doing this for years, a quick Facebook poll (asking fans if I should) returned over 300 likes in just an hour. You were heard loud and clear. So, thanks to all of you for validating my dream and pushing me to make it real! The film itself still speaks a great deal to me as an adult, too, especially with respect to having faith in ourselves, and keeping our imaginations alive. Though these are great lessons for any kid, we don't know the full depth of the Swamp of Sadness, in the metaphorical sense, until we're adults. The same can also be said of knowing our true self worth, passing through gateways and staying strong as we endure our trials in life. For a kids' film that is cheesy at times, it's profoundly symbolic and well-executed. (And as a side-note here, if you revisit it soon, check out the remastered Blu-ray edition...it's freakin gorgeous, cheese and all.) So, until we meet again on the clouds of Cirrus Sapiens, keep those imaginations burning bright, fellow spirits! Skytree - Deep Time (10:44) Released on World Elephant Day, August 12th, "Ganesha" is a charity project to raise funds and awareness for the protection of our incredible elephants, endangered worldwide. 100% of all proceeds go directly to helping elephants via World Animal Protection US, an official partner in this release: Worldanimalprotection.us.org Premier Indian illustrator, Archan Nair, created the all-original, beautiful depiction of Ganesha specifically for this project. The Hindu elephant god, Ganesha is widely revered as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts, sciences, intellect and wisdom. The music itself centers around recordings of elephant vocalizations, pitched to the key of the track, elephant footsteps timed to the beat, and three Ganesha mantras, provided by Srikalogy, with additional vocals by Laura Fay Lewis and Alokah Bear. Fellow producer Pericles provided many of the percussive and bass sounds to draw from as well. A background field recording of African savannah runs throughout the entire track. Downloads include two additional songs; an ambient piece titled "Deep Time" that spans over 10 minutes, intended for contemplation and meditation, and a hidden instrumental edit of "Ganesha", included exclusively in the download. In 2012 alone, an estimated 15,000 African elephants perished due to poaching for ivory, a material which could easily be replaced by more sustainable sources to create carvings, art and products. This project is meant to show how we can still create beautiful works inspired by these magnificent beings, in ways that do not endanger or harm them, but instead provide the help and support they need so much at this time. In Norse mythology, "Yggdrasil" is the great world tree that extends into the Heavens, and provides a gathering place for the Gods. When producing these tracks I kept envisioning it in my mind, creating many of the themes which became more developed in future works.
