Asking our Twitter, Facebook and Google+ followers for suggestions, one idea was to put together a compilation of tracks contributed by various artists. After a quick think, I decided to do it and SEQUENCE1 got underway. That was just over three weeks ago. The response I recieved from artists was genuinely overwhelming, I've been bowled over by the number of people wanting to be involved - artists who we have interviewed, reviewed, had mixes from or had been in contact with in other ways. There is a mixture of exclusive tracks, edits of existing tracks, some from forthcoming releases and from past releases. In all instances I couldn't be happier the tracks, and the lineup we have. My intention with SEQUENCE1 is to celebrate not only the 1st year of the site, but the breadth and quality of the electronic and experimental music 'scene'. There is such a strong sense of community within this field, and it's great to feel part of it. I'm very excited about SEQUENCE1, this is why we do what we do isn't it? With a clear focus on supporting independent artists and labels the compilations hopefully provide a platform for emerging as well as established artists. After the success of SEQUENCE1, whether to continue the series wasn't a hard decision to make. More than anything I really enjoyed the whole process of putting the compilation together; gathering and choosing tracks, getting to know the artists better, creating the artwork, promoting the release - the whole thing. As a statement of intent then, the series will continue with a compilation release every few months, showcasing the best of experimental, electronica, ambient, drone, noise (etc) has to offer. Oikos - Omniscence (6:30) It's nearly 2 years since the first edition of the SEQUENCE series was released. For me, SEQUENCE6 marks something of a completion of a cycle, the cadence in a musical phrase perhaps. That's not to say that this will be the last in the series, but something about it feels like a landmark; just because you've reached the top of the mountain, doesn't mean you never want to climb again. Overall SEQUENCE6 feels like a more experimental album than its predecessors, pushing into darker more inquisitive environments; making it harder to pin down into one particular genre (which can only be a good thing). Even with over 160 track submissions, curatorial we've found myself being tougher than ever in my selections - again, pushing this edition to be even better than the last, and represent the sheer volume and breadth of great experimental music out there. The brief to artists this time was slightly different in that we asked for 100% original / unreleased material. We've kept to this in the most part, with a few exceptions which bend the rules ever-so-slightly. As ever, tracks from established artists are juxtaposed with those of emerging artists. One of the best things with the submission process is being exposed to new music each time, discovering new artists whose work you can fall in love with, there are a few artists this time who I would like to work with on individual releases. The process of receiving and curating submissions has been at times a mammoth task, but always enjoyable. Introducing us to a range of new artists, some of who went on to release individual works with us, SEQUENCE has been integral to the development of Futuresequence into a label.
