As on two earlier albums, Graeme Edge regales listeners with esoteric poetry, this time adding a whimsical, ironic edge to his ponderous verse. August 2011 -----------------------  (Barron Laycock "Labradorman", amazon.com): This is the first of the "post-concept" album releases of the fabulous group that had first put the vital and exciting new sound of synthesized music on the map and integrated it with such mastery with the wall of dreamy electric sound they are so famous for. After exhausting the field of concept albums with four or five in a row, commencing with "In Search Of The Lost Chord" and ending with "Question Of balance a few breathless years later, the group finally retired in the early 1970s to regain their energy and momentum, and eventually released this new album, which features a wide range of terrific songs written by each of the band members, but really lacking any unifying theme other than the interesting word play on the musical scale with the album's title of Every Good Boy Deserves Favor i.e., first letter of each of the words in the title works out to EGBDF, or the musical scale. Nothing like historical musical trivia to spark up a review!There is a lot of good listening here, and a lot of musical virtuosity, especially with Mike Pinder on the Moog synthesizer, but also with great electric guitar and bass work by Justin Hayward and John Lodge, respectively, and also with terrific work by Graham Edge on drums and Ray Thomas on a variety of wind instruments. Of course, "The Story In Your Eyes" was the smash single driving the album up the charts, and every song from The Procession" to the final "My Song are quite good. My own personal favorites are "The Story In Your Eyes and a terrific song that never got any air time at all, "You Can Never Go Home Again" written and sung by Justin Hayward. By the way, Justin and John (Lodge) later released a interesting album called "Blue Jays" that I would love to see come out on CD. While it is an uneven album, there are four or five songs in it that truly deserve to see the light of day again, and unfortunately they never play any of them in concert. As far as this album is concerned, in my humble opinion it is a definite keeper. Enjoy! August 2011 -----------------------  (Bruce Eder, Allmusic.com): Despite the presence of a pair of ballads -- one of them ("New Horizons") by Justin Hayward the latter's most romantic number since "Nights in White Satin" -- Seventh Sojourn was notable at the time of its release for showing the hardest-rocking sound this band had ever produced on record. It's all relative, of course, compared to their prior work, but the music is comparatively stripped down here, and on a lot of it Graeme Edge's drumming and John Lodge's bass work comprise a more forceful and assertive rhythm section than they had on earlier records, on numbers such as "Lost in a Lost World," "You and Me," and "I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock & Roll Band)." The latter, authored by Lodge, was -- along with Lodge's "Isn't Life Strange" -- one of two AM radio hits that helped drive the sales of this album, issued in early November of 1972, past all previous levels. Indeed, it was with the release of this album that the Moodies achieved their great commercial success in America and around the world, with a "Grand Tour" that kept them on the road for much of the year that followed. The irony was that it was all about to end for them, for years to come, and the signs of it were all over this record -- Seventh Sojourn took a long time to record, and a lot of the early work on it had to be junked ("Isn't Life Strange" was one of the few early songs to get completed); it was clear to all concerned except the fans that, after six years of hard work in their present configuration, they all needed to stop working with each other for a time, and this was clear in the songs -- many have a downbeat, pensive edge to them, and if they reflected a questioning attitude that had come out on recent albums, the tone of the questioning on songs like "Lost in a Lost World," "You and Me," and "When You're a Free Man" had a darker, more desperate tone. Perhaps the group's mostly youthful, collegiate audience didn't notice at the time because it fit the mood of the times -- the album hit the stores in America the day before Richard Nixon's landslide presidential re-election victory (the culmination of events behind the scenes that would subsequently drive him from office). But the members were not working well together, and this would be the last wholly successful record -- difficult as it was to deliver -- that this lineup of the band would record, as well as the last new work by the group for over five years. August 2011 -----------------------  (Mr. Young, zjzjyy1990.blogbus.com): Progressive rock bands stumbled into the '80s, some with the crutch of commercial concessions under one arm, which makes the Moody Blues' elegant entrance via Long Distance Voyager — a number one album in the US — all the more impressive. Ironically enough, this was also the only album that the group ever got to record at their custom-designed Threshold Studio. The latter, given to them by Decca Records head Sir Edward Lewis in the early '70s and built to their specifications — but completed while they were on hiatus and never before used by the band (the preceding album, Octave, having been recorded in California to accommodate Mike Pinder) — was destroyed a short time after Long Distance Voyager's completion, in the wake of Decca's sale to Polygram. In that connection, it was also their best sounding album to date, and in just about every way is a happier listening experience than Octave was, much as it appears to have been a happier recording experience. While they may steal a page or two from the Electric Light Orchestra's then-recent playbook, the Moodies are careful to play their game: dreamy, intelligent songs at once sophisticated and simple. Many of these songs rank with the band's best: "The Voice" is a sweeping and majestic call to adventure, while the closing trio from Ray Thomas ("Painted Smile," "Reflective Smile," and "Veteran Cosmic Rocker") forms a skillfully wrought, if sometimes scathing, self-portrait. In between are winning numbers from John Lodge ("Talking Out of Turn" the pink-hued "Nervous") and Graeme Edge ("22,000 Days"), who tries his hand successfully in some philosophizing worthy of ex-member Mike Pinder. Apart from the opening track, Justin Hayward furnishes a pair of romantic ballads, the languid "In My World" (which benefits greatly from a beautiful chorus heavily featuring Ray Thomas' voice), which distantly recalls his Seventh Sojourn classic "New Horizons," and the more pop-oriented, beat-driven romantic ballad "Meanwhile." In typical Moodies fashion, these songs provide different perspectives of the same shared lives and observations. "Gemini Dream," which was a big hit in the U.S., does sound dated in the post-Xanadu landscape, but never does the band lose the courage of their convictions. Although the title and the cover art reference the then-recent Voyager space probe (forever burned in the minds of anyone who slogged through the first Star Trek movie, but then there's never a brain-burrowing grub around when you need one), only half of the songs have a "voyager" connection if you apply it to touring on the road; apologetic love songs consume the other half. Still, not everything has to be a concept album, especially when the songs go down this smooth. This album should make anybody's short list of Moodies goodies. And, yes, that's Patrick Moraz, ex-Refugee and ex-Yes member, who makes his recording debut with the band here, in place of original member Mike Pinder. The 2008 reissue only adds one bonus track, the minute-shorter single edit of "The Voice," but it is well-annotated and also offers the first significant improvement in sound that the album has ever enjoyed — as good as those harmonies sounded on the original LP (and they sounded great), they're significantly better on the expanded edition, and the playing comes through with startling clarity, full of rich timbres. August 2011 -----------------------  (Michael Ofjord, allmusic.com): Though this 1988 recording starts out with a song that rightfully stands with their best work, the rest of the album doesn't live up to that high standard. "I Know You're out There Somewhere" (a thematic extension of the 1986 hit "Your Wildest Dreams") is lyrically and musically superior in all aspects; fine textured keyboards from Patrick Moraz are featured in the middle of the song. However, the rest of the album is mostly inconsequential material that simply doesn't grab the listener. Part of the problem lies in the fact that Justin Hayward and John Lodge wrote all of the material. Ray Thomas is totally absent, and while he contributed less songs in the 1980s, his absence is sorely missed, especially in the vocal harmonies. Thomas' songs often bring a more whimsical point of view, which certainly would have helped diversify the mood of this release. Also, there is a "techno" feel to many of the arrangements, bringing a "manufactured" feel to the proceedings. In all fairness, none of the songs are total failures, and Sur La Mer is a bit more consistent overall than the Moodies last effort, The Other Side of Life. "Vintage Wine" is a catchy, if slight, look back at the '60s. "Deep" is as overtly sexual as any piece in the Moody Blues songbook. "Breaking Point" is much darker than most material in the group's catalog, as it looks at someone who is seemingly at the brink of losing sanity. Though the Moody Blues have been unjustly criticized over their career for being pompous or bombastic, their unique gift to the world of popular music is as archetypal art-rockers who sincerely write of the quest for finding meaning in life. August 2011 -----------------------  (Dave Connolly, allmusic.com): As much as The Moody Blues have earned the right to make a mediocre album, they shouldn't have been given the keys to the studio without a better batch of ideas than what ended up on Keys of the Kingdom. Like Sur La Mer three years earlier, many of the songs on here feel like prefabricated studio pop: programmed drum beats, sterile keyboards and soulless guitars pop up in the speakers seemingly untouched by human hands, compounded by brass arrangements and backing singers that were never a part of the Moodies' original vision. Perhaps "Once Is Enough" says it best; most listeners will quickly put this aside as an underinspired exercise and seek refuge in the band's glory days. Yet fans will strain to find that familiar glint of gold in Keys of the Kingdom, and they'll hear it in several pleasant tracks from John Lodge--including the tuneful "Lean On Me (Tonight)," which was wisely the only track from here salvaged for the subsequent Night At Red Rocks release--and the Ray Thomas track "Celtic Sonant." Justin Hayward retains his ear for pleasant love songs, best heard in "Bless The Wings (That Bring You Back)," but they succumb to pedestrian arrangements. Perhaps most alarming is the track "Is This Heaven?," which unconsciously borrows the melody from a well-known Beach Boys song (and you should be very worried, baby, when that happens). Part of the problem no doubt stems from using three different producers, which never bodes well for a project. The loss of Patrick Moraz (he does appear on three tracks) likely had little impact on the end result, since they don't really use his talents when they have him. August 2011 -----------------------  (ruce Eder, allmusic.com): A lot of people will laugh at the idea of a new Moody Blues album, eight years after their last new release and 35 years after the original band started in the business. The fact is, though, that this is about the liveliest and leanest that the group has sounded in more than 20 years. Among this collection of 14 songs, ten have very pleasing melodies, unpretentious lyrics, and generally attractive performances. That puts Strange Times several steps above the last few of the group's albums. In contrast to their previous album, Keys of the Kingdom, the vast majority of songs here are steeped in romance rather than pop mysticism -- nothing here is quite as catchy as "In Your Wildest Dreams," but several come close. Moreover, the group has built its sound on Strange Times around acoustic and electric guitars. The electronic keyboards are embellishment, nothing more, making for an unexpectedly lean and melodic album, less symphonic than anything they've done in decades. There are a few unfortunate digressions into the mystical side of the band's persona, but most of what's here are unpretentious love songs. Strange Times is still their most attractive album since Octave, and boasts their best album opener ("English Sunset") since "You and Me" from Seventh Sojourn. Not everything works that well, but even some of the heavy-handed work here, such as "The One," has some pretty vocal flourishes. "The Swallow" is one of Hayward's prettier slow numbers and worth its five-minute running time.
