Missus Beastly - Discography - 1970-2012 - 6 Albums
(The Crack in the Cosmic Egg): Formed circa 1968 in Herford (south-west from Hannover), the history of Missus Beastly is confused in the extreme! Apparently the reason for such confusion is three-fold: because of their manager, constant line-up changes, and that being born in the psychedelic era they were obviously all pretty spaced! The original band were amongst the most underground and psychedelic of German bands, though less so than CPM label mates Checkpoint Charlie. Like a darker more experimental Out Of Focus, with the accent on psychedelic blues and jazz, with a really groovy Dauner like piece included, and lots of surprises, their 1969 debut was amazing for its variety and invention. Whilst in the doldrums for a while, as numerous people passed through the Missus Beastly ranks, including Roman Bunka who went on to Embryo, it took until 1974 for the band to get together properly and record a new album. In the meantime, however, not only had their one-time manager Henry Fromm bootlegged their debut, he'd gone on to release other albums marketed as Missus Beastly (see Electric Bird entry for more on this). The original Missus Beastly, in the meantime, had changed considerably, becoming an instrumental jazz-rock group typical of the mid-1970's scene which was largely focused on Munich, with a style that featured more jamming, a livelier side-step from Passport, or a more groove-oriented twist on Embryo. Partly, this was down to Norbert Domling, who had a very strong bass style that locked the music together. He later went on to Toto Blanke's Electric Circus, and was replaced by the smoother styled Locko Richter (who later went to Aera). But, talking of Embryo, Missus Beastly's history here becomes totally entwined with them, and the birth of a number of other Schneeball label bands (i.e. Jurgen Benz went to Munju), with later albums being very close to the Embryo sound. The late-1970's were hard times, however, and it took two years after its recording to get SPACE GUERILLA released, at which time the band had yet another new drummer and bassist, and in fact split soon after. Throughout their history, it must be said that Missus Beastly were always a constantly inventive band, drawing in many influences and reshaping them into their own style. Fans of jazzy and bluesy Krautrock should find all their albums of interest. 05:10:20 || (diregarden.com): Missus Beastly from Herford were among the most famous German psychedelic bands, with the most confusing history of all of them. Their first LP released on CPM in 1970 - without any title, just like the second LP in 1974 - had a beautiful red cover artwork and is traded today at around US$700. A certain Henry C. From, pretending to be the band’s manager, flutist and drummer, arranged for a re-issue, which was released under the title of "Nara asst incense" (OPP 5-32) with the same tracks in a different order and with a totally new cover artwork. When no legal action was taken against him, this man had the cheek to embark on further fraudulent ventures by recording another two LPs and releasing them under the stolen name of Missus Beastly. On top of that, a bootleg CD of "Nara asst incense" was released by Germanofon.

August 2011 ----------------------- (diregarden.com): Their second record (Nova 6.22030) - again self-titled, in a gorilla cover - came out in 1974. It is instrumental jazz-rock, played by a significantly changed line-up. The corresponding Germanofon bootleg CD presents three bonus tracks which are not, however, songs of our Missus Beastly. To crown it all, there was a group that had the audacity to pose as Missus Beastly and even released records under their name. The first legal CD edition of the real Missus Beastly's second LP has now been released, taken from the master tape. Its booklet presents a detailed band story, discography, a lot of photographs, etc.

August 2011 ----------------------- (diregarden.com): “Dr. Aftershave and the mixed-pickles” (April 00001) was Missus Beastly’s third album, which once more presented some solid jazz rock, mostly instrumental. It was at the same time the first album to be released on April, the new self-distributing label run by Missus Beastly, Ton Steine Scherben, Embryo, and Sparifankal. The LP was recorded in the well-known Stuttgart Zuckerfabrik studio (a former sugar refinery) at the beginning of 1976. The two CD bonus tracks were recorded at the Vlotho festivals (“Umsonst und draußen” [outside and for free]) 1976 and 1977.
At that time, they were presented on the annual festival LPs. “Dr. Aftershave” was actually planned to be released on CD years ago, but some unexpected obstacles caused a long delay. The fourth and last Missus Beastly LP, “Space guerilla” from 1978, will soon be released on CD, again provided with bonus tracks. August 2011 ----------------------- (diregarden.com): Instrumental jazz-rock, recorded perfectly in the Stuttgart sound studio Zuckerfabrik in April 1978. Its style resembles that of its predecessor, “Dr. Aftershave and the mixed-pickles”. “Space guerilla” (Schneeball 00011) was then the fourth and last LP by Missus Beastly. All of the eight songs were written by the band members themselves. The two bonus tracks were taken from sampler LPs: the first one, from the sampler “Umsonst & draußen – Porta Westvlothica 78”, was drawn from the master tape; the second one was taken from “Rock gegen rechts” (1979). The album at hand is actually the first CD release of “Space guerilla”. The 32-page booklet contains a detailed band history, an accurate discography including cover and label reproductions, photographs, etc. Thus, the series of CD releases of Missus Beastly material has practically been completed.

August 2011 ----------------------- (diregarden.com): On September 2nd, 1974, shortly after putting out their second LP, Missus Beastly had a gig in the Bremen Post-Aula. The concert was broadcast by Radio Bremen in their program “Jazz live”. Luckily, the master tape was kept by the station over the decades and was made available for the CD release. The three long tracks are not to be heard on any Missus Beastly LP. Keyboarder Dieter Miekautsch had meanwhile left the group; instead, the great guitarist Eddy Marron – well-known for playing with Vita Nova and Dzyan and his long-standing co-operation with Peter Giger – had joined them. Free instrumental jazz(-rock).

August 2011 ----------------------- (krautrock-musikzirkus.de): Recorded early 1974 at the SWF-Studio in Baden-Baden, Germany by the same line-up, which recorded at the same time the 2nd Missus Beastly album. Improved versions of older titles and some new titles prove the bands great talent for improvisations. Brilliant sound of brilliant tunes played by refined musicians. This kind of instrumental krautjazzrock is timeless. The musical orientation of the new Missus Beastly rather followed afro-american than European music traditions, but influenced by that certain Krautrock feel. Great music by a great band. Digitally remastered from original master tape. Comes with informative booklet and rare photos (vinyl-version with insert)
