After sitting for a while, it started to expand. Through 2017 and into 2018, tracks were recorded and switched around, right up until the end when many of the additional tracks were taken off and replaced with new ones, leaving only the original tracks left over from the Cyan EP. What it turned into was a shifting, floating and sometimes glitched out beat infused journey that loops, hides and jumps in many directions. Ultimately, the album is intended to be experienced in one sitting, outdoors in a field. Indoors, lying down with headphones in low light or maybe while travelling to unknown places. It was a quick snapshot taken with a film camera and underexposed, with no date or description. Something about this photo intrigued me. It felt like I might have been there before, even though it wasn't possible. Maybe I saw it in a dream once. It also felt that it was a place I would like to go but could never reach, always staying the same distance away in the photo. I had the photo hanging on my wall for months but recently, the tracks started to come together and were inspired by the image and the atmosphere it created in my mind. It’s quite evident that early forms of Autechre, Richard Devine and Gridlock have injected some influence on the overall dynamic of this split release—a collection available as a no-charge download. Emitting a surplus of melodic audio crunching, distortion and signal processing, both musicians take careful steps to flood the senses with analog-to-digital experiments. Stretching the envelop on post-industrial electro, there’s an amalgamation of low-frequency bass that can’t be ignored. Each artist dives into classic IDM terrain—twisting the formula ever so slightly to a darker tangent. Where Dissolved’s contributions are balanced with an emotional strand, Nonima contrasts these undulating rhythms against an onslaught of robotic slivers. Key tracks from Nonima include the slow punching of “Fankle,” the erratic cyber-industrial of “Mefrac [V2]” and the upbeat contortions of “Seratonin.” Dissolved casts a melodic spectrum of light on the Plaid-induced beauty of “Blacklight Manta Flooder,” the fuzzy harmony swirls of “Ionic Lure” and the ethereal pitch-shifting auroras of “Fermentation.” The tempered, if not rugged style of Dissolved and Nonima create a push-pull effect that is ultimately compressed into disjointed bursts of organized chaos. Where yesteryear’s template for articulated and semi-emotive electronics has been emulated and reconstructed to great lengths, Foil Splinters is a welcomed retreat. Not necessarily reflecting on the architecture of sound, but rather illustrating a new twist in the fabric of industrialism, both artists have established a logical progression that merits repeat listening. Where Nonima (aka Tam Ferrans) takes a more mechanized trajectory, Dissolved (aka Paul Daniels) revolves around cyclic melodic loops and contagious percussive grittiness. Both combine forces seamlessly between each track as broken basslines and classic-era Warp/Toytronic manifests pierce through the haze. Layers upon layers of ambient sheets fall where they naturally do (ref. Dissolved’s “Tetrachromacy Collapse” and Nonima’s “Qiameth.”) As one sculptor influences the other, Macro Flinching represents, at least to these ears, an awakening and range of motion (and emotion), sliced into pieces via crackling rhythmic synapses. Sometimes slightly elegant as noted on Dissolved’s “Reassembled Vision” to dark and brooding as evidenced on Nonima’s “Wavefire,” this is a package of sonically vibrant exp-electronics and exploratory landscapes. Nonima’s “Gravity Prescription” yields enough hypnotic beauty to consume the senses and alone justifies taking Macro Flinching for a spin.
