The Polish Ambassador, real name David Sugalski, is an American electronic musician and disc jockey from Oakland, California. Sugalski began tinkering with music production while earning a Marketing degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder. In 2005 he released his first album, Diplomatic Immunity, a collection of 8- and 16-bit funk / electro anthems, which gained a surprising amount of fan support. After he released two more albums, he attracted the attention of a Microsoft-funded video game developer. The developer hired Sugalski to do the soundtrack for a game, which allowed him to focus on music full-time. Sugalski also performs as Ample Mammal, a musical side project of The Polish Ambassador. As The Polish Ambassador, Sugalski produces upbeat electronic dance music with layered melodies; under his Ample Mammal pseudonym he uses fewer layered melodies, instead using heavily processed drum tracks. Sugalski wanted to distinguish between the two personae in order to produce two differing styles of music. Sugalski regularly tours the United States performing solo and with other electronic music contemporaries. Sugalski is a multi genre musician, producing styles including electro, breaks, hip-hop, dub, funk, chiptune, and glitchy IDM. Sugalski uses live sound mixing, using computers and midi instruments to produce album tracks differently at every live performance. The Polish Ambassador's latest album, Pushing Through the Pavement, was released in June 2014. For most Polish Ambassador shows, Sugalski wears a neon-colored jumpsuit that he purchased in a Chicago thrift store for $3.99. He uses Ableton Live and Sonar to produce his music. I have heard your cries for music that moves you in ways you can’t explain. I have listened to you demand excellent tunes that won’t damper your stylish lifestyle. Alas, these be the reasons why I have created The Polish Ambassador. Yes, I am quite certain that God would introduce Diplomatic Immunity with the above decree. The album manages to use previously unexplored elements of the human imagination and show the universe some amazing tunes in a genre that had been prone to mockery. Explaining the style of music on Diplomatic Immunity is difficult, mainly because explaining The Polish Ambassador is no easy task, either. Self-described “half diplomat, half groove generator, all asexual-cyborg,” The Polish Ambassador cannot be fit into any prepackaged category. “The Polish Ambassador was sent to earth to quell all of the modern world’s problems. Synthesizers and a pure spirit are his primary weapons,” explains The Polish Ambassador while referring to himself, no, groove-self, in the third person. With such titles as “Infiltrating the U.N.” and “Not Without My Chapstick,” it becomes a chore to fight the curiosity evoked by the track list. The album begins with “The Birth of Yellow,” which should be played when you rise early in the morning, around 1pm. The song “Earth versus the World” gives birth to an efficient creativity that gives techno a good name. It made me feel a bit sad, which is quite the accomplishment, considering how often I tend to smile. The album in general covers a variety of emotions, something that was thought to be unreachable by techno. “Robot Motivation” sounds magical – it reminded me of my first trip to Disneyworld in Orlando, Florida, among other cute childhood memories. “Diplomatic Immunity” isn’t restricted to pinball music or shallow dance grooves. It has a conscience – it feels the feelings of human heart. “Amoeba Party” is somewhat romantic, and very enticing, but the message “Steamed Shrimp Break” is concrete – it brings the funk back to its rightful place, which is on this album. The final track, “Crumbling Numbers,” encourages the listener to shake “it” – whatever “it” may be – all the way home. And remember, it’s not over until it’s over. I originally became exposed to the sensuous synthesizer musings via Last.FM, a social music site based in London, UK. The site features a “Recommendation Radio,” which has the capability to expose the listener to a plethora of tunes that may pique interest. Some of the songs that played on mine were rather disappointing, but every time The Polish Ambassador played, I could not help but lose all inhibitions and celebrate the beauty that is techno. I proceeded to contact Mr. The Polish Ambassador for a press copy of his album to review for The Immaculatan, to which he kindly responded with the revelation that he was raised in Malvern, Pennsylvania. He wrote, “I used to rollerblade around Immaculata as a kid! I even did research in the library, took swim lessons there as a babe, and had baseball practice their fields, among many other things. It was a huge part of my up bringing.” The Polish Ambassador is intimately familiar with the internet, and wishes that you are, too: It’s no accident that the CD interacts with the reader. Highly energized and stacked with layers, these tunes teleport the listener into a primitive digital world composed of blocky, pixilated scenery. A continuous string of active melodies are transmitted via crude, vintage sine and square wave based synthesizers mixed with a tasteful lining of more developed and modern sound samples around the edges. “Phantasmagoria,” is best described as a sequence of images haphazardly strung together, like that of a dream; a series of fantastic illusory mental scenarios. The Polish Ambassador’s 2007 album Phantasmal Farm is based on this concept in title and sound. The name of each track contains a descriptive caption that alludes to a different imaginative scenario, piecing together fragments in a chronicle of retro-future, electro sound. More information:

Now I Must Kill Him, carries much of the 8/16- bit, midi based synths and electro sounds that created the alternate cyber universe of Polish Ambassador’s previous release, Phantasmal Farm. New elements are added, however, in the way of intricately manipulated sampling. Jagged vocal slices are used not for their lyrical content (which is virtually impenetrable) but as quips of rhythmic beat. These musical morsels are distorted as if they were being scratched out by a talented turntablist on vinyl. Expertly structured, this album is a perfect example of The Polish Ambassador’s knack for arrangement. There is no sense of empty space, and never an element lacking. The music is always full and textured, strategically removing layers here and there to isolate a specific line, thus creating new sonic colors. The compositional framework of his productions always seem to exhibit the rudimentary roles of well-crafted music ; melody, counter-melody, harmony, percussion and punctuation. Within the sounds and synths that create these well arranged layers is a distinguishable growth in sound complexity that will continue to evolve throughout the rest of The Polish Ambassador’s discography. Heavily layered tracks, funky synthesizer tunes; sped up or slowed down – all amass into a mutated, promiscuous, space age romp with a room full of sexy robot girls and brawny spaced out adventurers. The Polish Ambassador is a beat machine from the future; he drops his own unique blend of electro-funked, glitch-tweaked, wobble-freaked breakbeats that will have both dance floors and headphones undergoing heavy usage. “No Genre Left Behind,” Sugalski jokes as he blends elements of funk, glitch, idm, hip hop, 80s music, jungle, and dub into a beat soup that will instigate healthy doses of booty shaking and fist pumping. This double album can be likened to a computer rocking out to hybrid hip hop beats created with panache and style. Skinny Jeans is a prime example, chosen because of the clear thought process behind the absurdity, the maneuverings of Sugalski’s mind evident and the crafting is a joy to listen to. Salt N Pepa never had to worry about bringing the heat to the party but Sugalski seduces them in return on Glitch Chicks with Glow Sticks, beeps, glitches and ambient elements that titillate but also keeps the interest to garner the intended response. Track 17 is by another man in a suit, Daly City’s own Mochipet and The Polish Ambassador remixes VNex wonderfully. Originally a silly and lighthearted summer banger, with Sugalski at the helm it transforms into a slowed down, tingly and racy track with an added video game feel. Donning a yellow and white ski suit and a pair of dark tinted aviators, the Oakland artist is hard to miss. That’s true, of course, until he starts the set. At that point, he might as well be hiding behind a silk curtain: you won’t be paying attention to anything but the music. Intricate and full of deep colors, The Polish Ambassador (aka David Sugalski) is determined to craft a soundscape more picturesque than any of his contemporaries. Transcending mood and genre, he exhibits his artist prowess to the fullest with his new full-length release Future, Sex, Computers. In a genre where the status quo is to crank the low-end, the opener, “Quantum Peeps,” sounds less like a bass blast and more like a flurry of beeps. Glitch, electro, hip-hop and funk all get play here, but instead of sounding like a messy collage, Sugalski finds away to make it all work. This is pure head-nod stuff, but by the time he gets to “Save, Develop, Protect” a searing emotional quality starts to shine through. A lot of that comes from purely from his musicianship. Sugalski is a master of composition, and where some of his peers would be content with knob twiddling, he pushes for something more in his progressions. The real standouts are the chiller cuts, like “Interdimensional Lounge Music.” Slow moving, but full of color, this song has some of the most interesting chord progressions out today. Once he’s set up his backdrop, that’s when things really get interesting. Sugalski uses these modest compositions as a canvas, spraying blips, beeps, samples, drum breaks and disconnected vocal lines across the open spaces. In the world of overdoing it, Sugalski knows how to hold back. Coming from the DIY school, Sugalski’s sixth album is his first with major label support. Recently signed to electronic music powerhouse 1320 Records, The Polish Ambassador is poised to make a splash with major-weight distribution. Additionally, the 1320 rep is putting Sugalski on a lot more bills across the country. All in all, Future, Sex, Computers is a masterful compilation because it never shouts, but always keeps your attention. Sugalski is simply miles ahead of the electro crowd, and refuses to slip into any of the same pitfalls similar DJs might face. You know what? Forget what I said. Sugalski’s not a DJ. Sugalski’s mantra is “No Genre Left Behind”—and he sticks to his guns. The Oakland producer strings together an electro-funk feel in a variety of tempo changes while infusing glitches, bass lines, and samples that will leave your head spinning somewhere before Solidarity. Future, Sex, Computers (Remixes and B-Sides) is The Polish Ambassador’s first remix album featuring several artists met while traversing the country. The album also includes three original recordings that round out an otherwise maddeningly interesting album. As it is, Sugalski’s arrangements take you on a journey, picking the listener up, plopping them down again, and then dangling them—not unlike the late, great MJ’s blanketed baby—before snatching the whiplashed listener back from the precipice. Sugalski’s forte is composing and it shows throughout the album as carefully placed samples accentuate the beat writhing below. Outside of the three originals, “Concubot” 1,2, and 3, the rest of the album are tweaks to the Polish Ambassador’s earlier album from this year Future, Sex, Computers. The result is a dizzying array of interpretations on the music that lend itself to a more developed sound that is only possible through a combining of unique points of view. Each of the eleven original tracks from the previous release are redone by producers handpicked by Sugalski, who couldn’t be happier with the end result. “I couldn’t be more pumped about the producers involved,” said Sugalski on his website. Included in the project were the likes of Phutureprimitive, The Great Mundane, and Samples, among others. What comes of the mixing of tendencies and behaviors is an almost completely new album, reaching heights that could only be had in the fashion of collaboration. In these two musical episodes, TPA winds his way through an eclectic sampling of music from a wide variety genres. Although most of the tracks are centered on personalized hip-hop remixes, Homeboys in Outerspace is a pop-culture potluck, a mash-up of bits and samples from a variety of artists. Many of them are very brief and difficult to pull out, as they are used in such an elaborately woven tapestry of musical colors that are stitched together seamlessly with that electro galactic, Polish Ambassador spin. This two-part collection is much more lyrically focused than any of his other works. And rightly so; what would be the fun of remixing prominent hip-hop tracks and artists if you were to exclude the main component of lyricism? The self-confidence of proud rap vocals are mixed with the melancholic melodies of indie dance. For example, Young MC meets Justice in a remix of “Bust a Move.” Did you ever think you would find yourself grooving Phil Collins? Well, you just might now that you can find him in one place with The Beastie Boys in this electronic take on “Sure Shot.” You may find yourself surprised at the sonic unity that is created between these seemingly unrelated artists and genres. Future, Sex, Computers maintained a heavily abstract down-tempo nature, more resonant with his work under Ample Mammal, while Homeboys: Episode 2 is comprised of hip-hop stems, all drenched in that contorted, glitched-out, futuristic sound that is becoming dubbed as “the Polish Ambassador touch”. You may already be familiar with his remix of Rye Rye‘s “Bang” which is supported by a funky bassline and layered with sound breaks, distorted vocals and an infectious ass-shaking beat. “Hell Yeah” (Dead Prez) eases in with a slower start, opening the curtains for a celestial dance-floor. It’s tough to strike a balance between dirty, badass and psychedelic, but this is the odd liminal space that Sugalski resides in, truly making his music unparalleled. My favorite track off this album is his remix of “Sure Shot” by the Beastie Boys. This track knocked me with a major wave of nostalgia, definitely reminiscent of the emotions evoked in F,S,C, making it all the more apparent of how much of himself Sugalski injects into each track he produces or reworks. My prediction is that this slew of remixes will prove popular amongst the younger ears of EDM for their collective hard-hitting and unabashed nature. Seasoned ears will gravitate towards these tracks as well for the complex nuances and calculated manipulation that Sugalski so expertly inlays. I can honestly say that this album was a surprising deviation from past work, but upon further listen, I found Sugalski, in all of his glory, nestled deeply in the core of each track. The Polish Ambassador, real name David Sugalski, is an American electronic musician and disc jockey from Oakland, California. Sugalski began tinkering with music production while earning a Marketing degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder. In 2005 he released his first album, Diplomatic Immunity, a collection of 8- and 16-bit funk / electro anthems, which gained a surprising amount of fan support. After he released two more albums, he attracted the attention of a Microsoft-funded video game developer. The developer hired Sugalski to do the soundtrack for a game, which allowed him to focus on music full-time.
