Не изобретая велосипед, Эллисон относится к своим произведениям с искренней любовью (как и к своей семье – так, данный альбом он посвятил своему новорожденному сыну), четко выстраивая последовательность сложных, качающих ритмов, наводя легкую дымку неспешных атмосферных звуков, бережно касаясь клавиш, рождая простую и красивую мелодию из двух-трех нот. И ломкая перкуссия, и упругий бит, и легкий цифровой шелест и хруст – все тщательно сбалансировано и воздействует на слушателя самым положительным образом. Есть и моменты, которые призваны разогнать однообразие (если оно на альбоме и есть, то обусловлено, скорее всего, жанровыми рамками, а не возможностями композитора) – это и меланхоличная элегия «Pastorale», и восточные мотивы в «Sea Stars For Tristen», и финальная песня «Man In The Window», исполняет автор. В целом же, музыка «Darshan Ambient» такая же красивая, простая и безмятежная, как и названия, которые Майкл выбирает для своих опусов. Расслабиться никогда не помешает, и данный музыкальный проект готов предоставить все, что для этого нужно. He combines subtle sequences and dense atmospheres to create a diverse and mezmerizing soundscape. His explorations uncover a a true work of beauty. The contemplative journey covers the gamut from subtle atmospheres like "Adrift in the Amber" to light and contemplative pieces like "The Mirror of Silence", and "The Dream Pool." Allison infuses his dense arrangements with feeling and purpose. The sound design is flawless. This is a masterwork from a master artist.

In its straightforward simplicity, economy of notes and chords, yet abundance of genuine feeling and utter contentment and serenity, listening to this artist's work is like feeling the embrace of a dear and true friend. It's like walking in the woods in the crisp air of autumn or seeing your son or daughter at play in the backyard on a summer's eve. Providence is about appreciating the beauty and wonder that surrounds us every day if we just laid down our cynicism and the weight of an uncertain future for a brief while. It wraps around you and transports your mind beyond the confines of reality to a place of thought-provoking, magically mysterious bliss. Darshan Ambient does exactly this with his album Autumn's Apple. Listeners are greeted with a soundscape that ebbs and flows with synthesizers that are relaxed, hazy and peaceful. A spattering of beats show up from time to time to give the music a faint bluesy groove, while delicate piano melodies meander through the mix. The mood is reflective yet uplifting, making one think of crisp fall days, watching as nature retreats for the season, yet reveling in the colorful show it leaves in its wake. Any fan of mellow ambient or relaxing atmosphere music will embrace the artistic work of Darshen Ambient on this album.

Michael Allison, the creative force behind Darshan Ambient, found the inspiration for the album’s original concept in the art of French surrealist painter Yves Tanguy, and like the painter’s images, Allison’s compositions conjure abstract landscapes, skillfully depicted with a tight sonic palette. However, the album delivers more than just a musical interpretation of Tanguy’s alien landscapes and abstract shapes. For Michael Allison, an artist that consistently delivers excellence, this release is clearly coming from a deeper and more meaningful place. During the beginning phases of its creation, Michael became deathly ill and landed in the Intensive Care Unit, comatose for six days. After his release from the hospital, Michael began a slow rehabilitation process which included moments of intense inspiration. On this new offering, composer and creative force behind Darshan Ambient, Michael Allison, once again expertly navigates the fine line between poignancy and elation with his trademark melodies, chord structures, and instrumentation.
Fans of previous Darshan Ambient albums will not be disappointed. The classic ambient spaces are certainly present, and Allison’s signature rhythmic flair and strong melodic sensibilities are in full bloom on this effort. There are also some stronger, more straightforward elements such as electric guitars, heavy drums and orchestral programming that bring a satisfying intensity to key moments of the album. Allison dedicates the album to his lifelong friendship with fellow artist and musician Juan Maciel, a.k.a Naux (1951-2009), whom Allison cites as a mentor, collaborator and spiritual instigator. “I first met Naux in June 1977,” explains Allison. “He not only introduced me to yoga and meditation, he also taught me discipline as an artist and musician. We played in several bands, spent many hours in the studio and did several tours together. As with previous Darshan Ambient releases, Allison’s melodies and harmonization are sublime, and his rhythms, while complex, evoke a sense of effortlessness that leave the listener engaged and fulfilled. At times, the album brilliantly weaves Jazz motives through ambient forms, while never abandoning the compelling, signature style of electronic music for which Darshan Ambient is known.
The album began as an homage to Miles Davis and John Coltrane, and on a few of the tracks Allison expertly explores new territory, straddling the line between ambient and jazz, while building on the powerfully appealing electronic sound heard on earlier releases, From Pale Hands To Weary Skies and A Day Within Days. As Michael says, “There is certainly a sonic bridge between ‘ambient’ and ‘jazz’ music, a logical extension between the two genres.” The diverse selections range from the upbeat ‘Sun Fade‘ through the melancholy trumpet solo of ‘Silent Smile (Angelo’s Song)‘ to the pure ambience of ‘Waiting On A Dead Man’s Horse,‘ which could almost be at home on an ambient opus written by electronic legend Brian Eno. The trademark hypnotic and heartfelt style that has come to define all Darshan Ambient releases is certainly present here in the skillful use of multi-layered percussion, synth textures, bass, and guitar grooves. Allison’s unmistakeable compositional style is in top form, delivering thoughtful melodic phrases and themes with a familiar atmosphere.
Picking up where 2011’s Dream In Blue left off, which skillfully straddled a delicate musical line between ambient and jazz, Falling Light finds Allison moving more towards an almost ambient Americana sound at times. The deliberate use of lap steel and slide guitars blended with synth textures that seem to stretch to the horizon, brings to mind visions of wide open spaces, big skies and endless possibilities. As Allison says, “It’s very visual. There are some beautiful lap steel guitar sounds that I used a little on the last album, but wanted to completely feature on this one; they add a gorgeous twang to some of the tracks. Masterfully crafted ambient synth textures, guitar loops and effortless rhythmic grooves lay the foundation for lush guitar phrases, pulsing strings, electronics, and poignant melodies, in part highlighted by a darkened piano, a distant trumpet, or a fragile and touching wordless vocal.
While not deviating from the familiar signature sound that fans will immediately recognize, Little Things as a whole is noticeably more atmospheric than recent Darshan Ambient releases. Allison notes, “In many ways I’ve gone back to my ambient roots on this album. Although there are still rhythms on many of the tracks, it’s a much more ethereal album. The music has a very dreamlike quality to it.” Dreamlike and ethereal for sure, but with a deep, mysterious, introspective quality. Allison continues, “My intention was to make a darker album. Songs From The Deep Field - running just over an hour – builds and releases layer upon layer, ranging from pure space to kinetic free fall; from weightless drift to rhythmic power. Filtered throughout the album are passages that bear resemblance to the works of Patrick O’Hearn, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Jonn Serrie, and other pioneers of ambient space music, all orbiting around a core comprised of the complex layers and familiar atmospheres of Darshan Ambient’s enticing sensibilities. The result is a heavenly blend of ambient synth textures, lush guitar loops, pulsing strings, driving rhythms, electronics, and poignant melodies; a beautiful array of ambient electronic instrumentation that reaches for the stars and beyond. Inspired by the film’s subject matter, Michael recorded a poignant and beautiful score for the documentary and released it as a soundtrack album in late 2015. However, after the score was complete, the music continued to flow, and Michael had much more material than could be used in the film. So when the time came to begin work on the next Darshan Ambient album, Michael decided to make it a companion work; a collection of music that had been created during the Sultana sessions, along with additional tracks that continued to spring forward from the energy of the film project even after it had been completed. The Sultana’s somber story of a forgotten tragedy sets the stage for minimalist orchestrations and touching melodic piano moments that linger within the more introspective and mysterious realms of the classic Darshan Ambient sound. On April 27, 1865, the steamboat Sultana was heading north out of Memphis, Tennessee, overcrowded with more than 2,300 Union soldiers, many of them newly released POWs on their way home after surviving the horrors of Civil War prison camps. In the early morning hours three of the Sultana’s four boilers exploded and the steamboat caught fire and sank, killing an estimated 1,800 of the souls aboard. Greed, corruption, tragedy and humanity make the Sultana a story to remember, and “Remember The Sultana” recounts what happened on that ill-fated voyage, the how and the why; raising it’s story from the depths of the Mississippi and into the hearts of people everywhere. The music of Darshan Ambient has long been a muse for “Remember The Sultana” writer & associate producer Brendan Hedges, and this is the first time the two have worked together from the start of a project. According to Hedges, “I’d email Michael some script pages, and very quickly he’d send back a haunting strand of theme, or even – to my astonishment – a beautifully realized, complete track. Every time, my heart wound up racing – and I’d rush back to the script, hugely inspired. “Composing music for ‘Remember The Sultana’ was a very moving experience. The sense of hope, and the soldiers’ longing to be home after five bloody years of fighting was a terrific challenge to put into the score. Much of the music during the time of the Civil War was in 3/4 time signature, so several of the pieces in the score reflect that, as I tried to emotionally capture the period in which this tragedy took place.
