Created around the core quartet of Jakko Jakszyk (21st Century Schizoid Band), Porcupine Tree's Gavin Harrison, Pandit Dinesh (Jah Wobble etc.) and the legendary Danny Thompson (Pentangle), Dizrhythmia is the much acclaimed Indo-Fusion project, which also features performances by a stellar group of Indian Classical and experimental musicians such as sarangi player Sultan Khan, Dave Stewart (Hatfield & The North) and B.J.Cole.
--
The sole album by the jazz-rock collective Dizrhythmia -- they were named in honor of Dizzy Gillespie, not the similarly titled second album by Split Enz -- is a most pleasant surprise. Led by guitarist Jakko M. Jakszyk (of the chartbound funk-poppers Level 42) and premier jazz-folk bassist Danny Thompson, Dizrhythmia also included a full-time Indian percussion player, Pandit Dinesh, alongside drummer Gavin Harrison, and features several other Indian vocalists and instrumentalists. (More familiar names like Hatfield and the North's Dave Stewart and Peter Blegvad also drop in.) This is no simple funk-plus-sitar attempt at crossover fusion, however; the Indian classical instruments avoid the usual curry house clichés, and there is no whiff of orientalism or exotica in the songs. Instead, the songs perfectly integrate rhythms and melodies from both musical traditions in roughly equal doses, supporting each other subtly but effectively. The album is low-key but not ambient (a comparison could be made to the '80s dream pop collective This Mortal Coil), with an emphasis on atmosphere rather than groove. Hardly Top of the Pops material, Dizrhythmia is an intriguing and mostly quite successful experiment.

Jakko M. Jakszyk (born Michael Lee Curran on June 8th 1958 in London) is a guitarist and vocalist who has played with Level 42.
His mother was Irish singer Peggy Curran and his father an unknown US airman. At 18 months of age, he was adopted by Norbert and Camille Jakszyk.
His first significant band was 64 Spoons with Lyndon Connah (drums, keyboards), Tam Neal (keyboards, drums) and Andy Crawford (bass). Their only album, Landing on a Rat Column, was released in 1992, many years after it was recorded. He subsequently worked with Dave Stewart and joined him in the band Rapid Eye Movement (1980-1981). He subsequently worked with Peter Blegvad and David Jackson and went on to join Blegvad, John Greaves and others in The Lodge (1987).
In 1990, Jakszyk's album with Tom Robinson, We Never Had It So Good was released. In 1991, he joined Level 42. His first solo release was 1994's EP Kingdom of Dust, made with three ex-members of Japan, Richard Barbieri, Mick Karn and Steve Jansen. This was followed in 1995 by a full-length album, Mustard Gas and Roses, again featuring Karn and Jansen, as well as Danny Thompson, Gavin Harrison, Sam Brown and BJ Cole.
He is married to model Amanda Giles, daughter of drummer Michael Giles and he joined his father-in-law in the 21st Century Schizoid Band in 2002. He has also done session work for Akiko Kobayashi.
Jakszyk's latest solo album, The Bruised Romantic Glee Club, was released in 2006. The line up includes contributions from Connah, Harrison, Stewart, Nathan King (bass), Pandit Dinesh (tabla and vocals), Robert Fripp, Peter Sinfield, Mel Collins, Ian Wallace (drums), Danny Thompson, Mark King, Hugh Hopper and Clive Brooks (of Egg, drums). Gavin Harrisonhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gavin_Harrison
Gavin Harrison (b. May, 1963 in Harrow, North London) is a member of the British progressive rock band Porcupine Tree, in which he plays drums and percussion. Harrison has authored two instructional drum books entitled Rhythmic Illusions and Rhythmic Perspectives. He also wrote and produced his own instructional DVDs, Rhythmic Visions and Rhythmic Horizons, at his home studio.
Gavin Harrison quietly released his solo album Sanity & Gravity in 1998 to some critical acclaim. Pandit Denishhttp://www.reasonrefills.com/pukkamasalarefill.html
Pandit Dinesh is the godfather of the British Asian Musical Movement.
Together with Stephen Luscome & Asha Bhosle he is one third of the West India Company. His other credits include Osibisa, Monsoon, Caron Wheeler, Annie Lennox, Blancmange, Boy George, Trevor Horn, George Fenton, Jah Wobble, Ryuichi Sakamoto etc. Playing a style of percussion which combines Indian, African, Latin & Pop, Dinesh's instrumental 'batterie de cuisine' includes tabla, congas, madal, duggi, chenda, timbales, dhol, dholak and duff to name but a few. Danny Thompsonhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Thompson
Daniel Henry Edward 'Danny' Thompson (born 4 April 1939) is an English double bass player. He has had a long musical career playing with a large variety of other musicians, particularly Richard Thompson (no relation) and John Martyn, but including many others: at various times has for example played with Roy Orbison, Freddie and the Dreamers, Tubby Hayes, Ronnie Scott, Tom Paxton, Donovan and Kate Bush. For five years, he was a member of Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated, and he was a founding member of the British folk rock band Pentangle. Since 1987, he has also recorded four solo albums. He converted to the Muslim faith in 1990.
The music on this album is a synthesis of two musical forms. The Western Tradition is represented by guitarist/songwriter Jakko Jakszyk, drummer Gavin Harrison and bassist Danny Thompson. They are joined in Dizrhythmia by Indian percussionist Pandit Dinesh, together with a stellar group of Indian classicists.
The idea behind Dizrhythmia were first formulated by Jakko Jakszyk, whose compositions formed the basis for the Indian musicians' improvisational skills. Once the guests had made their contributions the tracks had naturally taken on a different form, a new direction. "I think most of the Western fusions with Indian music so far have been patronising." says Jakko.
"The music has such rhythmic sophistication compared to Western classical music which, for example, didn't even use syncopation until comparatively recently.
The melodic timbre of Indian music also appealed to me, I liked the melancholy technique and dexterity of the singers.
Improvisation is also integral to the Indian classical structure; Indian musicians never play the same thing twice." Jakko Jakszyk and Gavin Harrison first met in 1984. Jakko's career, by that time, had already included work with the National Youth Theatre plus songwriting, producing and playing guitar for a whole variety of artists and bands, including Swing Out Sister and Jermaine Stewart. He also played guitar for the Inspirational Pentecostal Choir of The First Born Church Of The Living God; indeed, he was the only white member of the choir. Harrison's career, meanwhile, had been built on a solid reputation as one of Britain's finest drummers. Among his credits, for instance is work with a variety of artists, from Iggy Pop to Geno Washington and Duran Duran's guitarist Andy Taylor. Pandit Dinesh is part of the fourth generation from a leading family of classical musicians from India. He is the son of a legendary classical singer called Pandit Maniramji. Pandit Dinesh's own career, however, started with session work for the Indian film industry - in India the movies are the prime vehicle for popular culture and most singers and musicians make their initial reputations working on soundtracks.
Pandit also made frequent trips to London, where he played with visiting Indian stars. It was on one such trip, in 1980. that he decided to make London his home.
Despite several setbacks Pandit Dinesh achieved a breakthrough with the group Osibisa, since when he has carved himself a regular career working with such diverse artists as the Communards, Nick Heyward, Simply Red, The Thompson Twins, ABC and Blancmange.
It was Pandit Dinesh's reputation that gave Dizrhythmia the access to the cream of visiting Asian musicians whose work you can hear on the album. Danny Thompson is one of the world's finest acoustic bassists, a reputation that now stretches back 30 years. Danny was a stalwart of the Soho jazz scene in the Fifties and, by the following decade, his musical horizons embraced everything from jazz and folk to rhythm & blues. He worked with Ronnie Scott, for instance, and Tubby Hayes, Alexis Korner and Ginger Baker.
By the end of the Sixties he was a member of the much-vaunted folk-rock group Pentangle and few years later he began a long association with John Martyn.
His unique, melodic sound has endeared Thompson to every generation of musicians. His career includes credits with John McLaughlin, Kate Bush, Julian Cope, Everything But The Girl and David Sylvian.
Most recently, however, Thompson has entered into the limelight himself, releasing his own solo album, called Whatever, to rave applause from the critics. Boasting such a wealth of talent and imagination. The haunting music of Dizrhythmia naturally possesses its own unique soul.
