"Twenty years after, or Hamp's return" was the dignified subtitle of "Ring dem vibes" : in 1955, Lionel Hampton had taken part in an experiment — "Lionel Hampton and his French new sound" — that had confronted him with some of the best French modernists. It was an initiative taken by the Blue Star label, which invited him again two decades later. This time, however, the environment would allow him to relive the spirit of the small-group sessions he'd done for Victor before the war ; all of them had produced sides that have become exemplary in the definition of jazz "classicism". When Hampton walked through the doors of the Studio Hoche, he was escorted by his loyal guitarist, Billy Mackel — their first association dated back to 1944 — and organist Reynolds Mullins. Waiting for him were five French musicians, plus one of the most refined drummers to have appeared in Duke Ellington's orchestra, Sam Woodyard. Sam had settled in the French capital, and had a regular drum-seat behind the "Swing Machine", a band which had delegated three more of its members for this session its leader, Gerard Badini, a fiery tenor saxophonist with an insidious gift for raising the temperature of a tune — listening to him on Blue Lou, facing someone with the same virtues, Hampton, as it happens, is a true joy — plus the faultless duo of Raymond Fol on piano, and Michel Gaudry on bass. They were joined by alto saxophonist Michel Attenoux, who'd played with Hampton before, and trombonist Claude Gousset. A sharp team whose members were each summoned by Hampton, during his vocal on Ring dem bells, to take a turn at the microphone. Seven come eleven sees a sixth accomplice join them, also a vibraphonist, and a Hampton disciple in spirit if not in deed : Dany Doriz ; he had been the instigator of this reunion which, even if it did live up to all its promises, (how can you resist Psychedelic Sally for example ? ), hadn't been as easy to put together as it might appear today. In 1976, French support for Hampton was far from unanimous. In "Jazz Hot", Pierre Lafargue wrote the following, which perfectly summed up the situation, and can be applied to "Ring dem vibes" without any difficulty : "In Hampton, of course, there's the rather dubious "showman" whose abysmal taste is merely accentuated by the passing of time ; but on the other hand, time's mellowing effect also has the result of intensifying that precious gift of his which transforms his vibraphone, his drumming or his piano into as many blazing bonfires, all of them exhibits that prove his perenniality."
