West Side Stories is a continuation of the music found on Worth Waiting For, my last Verve release. Whereas Worth Waiting For was my first album in many years, and consisted of material I had written over a long period of time, the material for this album was written during the last six months and represents a more focused effort. It's also a more personal work, which was written with less collaboration, and although it's like Worth Waiting For in the use of live drums and live playing, West Side Stories uses retro keyboards like the B3 organ, acoustic piano and the Wurlitzer electric piano, which have more history and emotional resonance than current synthesizers. About the title: I live on the west side of LA., and hope the flavor and ambience of the west side is reflected in the music.
I'd like to let the music speak for itself, but I must say a few words about the composition, "Tuva". Although the high tones above the vocals may sound like a synthesizer, it is actually throat singing by the acclaimed Kongar-ool Ondar, of the Republic of Tuva, a remote region of the former Soviet Union in the heart of Asia. To explain a bit about how this collaboration came about: I read a few books about physicist Richard Feynman, including Tuva or Bust, written by Ralph Leighton, which explores Feynman's interest in the culture of Tuva. I sent Ralph a letter, and we met - he invited me to a performance of Kongar-ool's at Cal Tech. After hearing him perform and being quite amazed and impressed, I invited Ondar over to the studio to explore some musical ideas. The song "Tuva" is the result. The first theme is an ancient song about the Alash river, with words so old that they are obscure to even Kongar-ool. The second theme relates to the beautiful forest in Tuva. For appearing on this CD, I made my studio available so that Kongar-ool could record an album's worth of new, original material for release in Tuva.
