AW YOU DAWG (Hoover, Calloway) Known to millions of his fans worldwide as the "Hi-De-Ho" man, the legendary Cab Calloway was born Cabbell Calloway on Christmas Day 1907 in Rochester. New York. He was however brought up in Baltimore where as a youngster he sang in the Baltimore Melody Boys. After studying law briefly. Cab opted for a career in music and started performing in clubs in the Chicago area.
In the late Twenties he joined a musical outfit called the Missourians and such was his popularity with audiences that he soon began building up his own fan following, and in 1931 the Missourians changed their name to Cab Calloway & His Orchestra. Their first major engagement under their new name was as the replacement act for Duke Ellington at the legendary Cotton Club in New York's Harlem, and it was during a performance there that Cab forgot the lyrics to the song that he was singing and began singing "Hi-De-Ho" for the rest of the number. Such was the audience's reaction that it became an integral part of his act and Cab became known as the "'Hi-De-Ho" man. Cab Calloway had his first million-selling record in 1939 with Jumpin' Jive and he also had another big seller with Minnie The Moocher. In 1943 he received an award for his work in the film Stormy Weather, and was also feted for his role of Sportin' Life in Gershwin's Porgy & Bess. In recent years his musical legend has been revived by pop stars like Joe Jackson (who had a major hit with a revival of Jumpin' Jive) and several successful stage shows. This new collection features many Cab Calloway favourites including St. Louis Blues, St. James Infirmary. Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea, Sweet Georgia Brown, Mood Indigo and You Rascal You.
