Notoriously flashy, self-mockingly dramatic, purveying an aura of license and vice for the titillation of upscale audiences - and therefore sometimes remembered as a mere novelty act -Cab Calloway was an extraordinarily accomplished and influential singer, composer, and bandleader.
CABELL CALLOWAY was born in 1907 in Rochester, New York, and grew up in Baltimore; his sister Blanche led a band in the twenties, but Calloway was studying law when he decided to devote himself to playing music in Chicago clubs. He toured briefly with Blanche's band; by 1929, he was leading his own band at the IN these recordings from Calloway's peak years, we hear a powerful vocal instrument fully engaged by a mature, bravado persona. There are few uncharacteristically sweet numbers here; with originals and carefully selected covers, Calloway has fully developed his masterful "jive" sound. But scat-ting and innuendo aside, on such songs as "Foolin' With You" and the comic canting of "Utt-Da-Zay" we can easily hear the sheer power and accuracy of that big, blues-inflected voice. THE swing and musicianship of the Orchestra's sections and soloists are everywhere evident too. Calloway's wildest moves would have fallen flat without the crispness and imagination of musicians like Cozy Cole, Doc Cheatham, Dizzy Gillespie, or Chu Berry. The opening cut on the collection, "Rustle Of Swing," is a showcase for the Orchestra's drive, control, and polish. "Floogie Walk" and "Trylon Swing-also show the lightness of touch, the sectional balance, and the infectious heat of classic swing: soloists range while the sections counter-punch; the rhythm dances. "Lonesome Nights" is lush and thoughtful. COMBINING strong musicianship with a comic, slightly threatening persona made Cab Calloway a huge star with both black and white audiences of the thirties and forties. Flamboyant in his zoot suit, tossing his long hair, flirting with androgyny, often writing and choosing songs that celebrate drinking, marijuana, and sex, while popularizing a new lingo, Calloway parodied and capitalized on white images of the black world. He broadened and exaggerated the connection both in the public mind and in real life of blues, jazz, and swing to a world of gangsters and hedonism - and the American fear of and attraction to an imagined "jungle" lawlessness. But in his peak recordings, Calloway wisely made this underworld sensibility silly as well as exciting. Clever rhyming and nonsense syllables in "(Hep-Hep!) The Jumpin' Jive" and the "jive school" conceit in "Jiveformation Please" are examples of the self-consciously silly wit that Calloway brought to his swing. Too often, listening today to the swing greats, studying their influence on the increasingly adventurous developments in jazz, we forget that the innovations of Louis Armstrong, the complexity and drive of Duke Ellington, the smoothness and joy of Ella Fitzgerald were developed in nightclub and dancehall settings under the pressures of hectic touring and rowdy, crowd-pleasing live performance. Cab Calloway's exaggerations of the vaudeville atmosphere return us to that world. AND his influence has been widespread. In the swing and jive era, Louis Jordan patterned himself on Calloway. In the rock and roll explosion, Calloway's inheritor was Little Richard, whose screaming vocals, flamboyantly sexual persona, and onstage antics left black R&B fans of the 1950s cold but found a large, excited audience among white teenagers. Screamin' Jay Hawkins found dark comedy in another growling, whooping, licentious persona; in the late sixties, Jimi Hendrix's virtuoso musicianship was supported by peacock costuming and show-off stage antics. Even the Western Swing of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys borrows heavily from some of Calloway's vocal techniques-Wills's constant "uh huh's" and "that's right's" providing a variant on Calloway's "yowza's." In the eighties, androgyny and humor were given a cerebral twist by Prince. Rap borrowed from Calloway's freewheeling piles of rhyme. And the jump-jive aspect of swing found new life among performers as diverse as John Belushi and Joe Jackson. IN the thirties and forties, blending a powerful voice, impeccable musical taste, and broad, showman hustle, Cab Calloway set his indelible stamp on the musical sound of an era. -William Hogeland REM GENRE Jazz REM DATE 1997 REM DISCID 330EED16 REM COMMENT "ExactAudioCopy v1.3" CATALOG 0000000000000 PERFORMER "Cab Calloway" TITLE "Jiveformation Please - 1938-1941" REM COMPOSER "" FILE "01 - Rustle Of Swing.wav" WAVE TRACK 01 AUDIO TITLE "Rustle Of Swing" PERFORMER "Cab Calloway" REM COMPOSER "" INDEX 01 00:00:00 TRACK 02 AUDIO TITLE "Foolin' With You" PERFORMER "Cab Calloway" REM COMPOSER "" INDEX 00 02:58:50 FILE "02 - Foolin' With You.wav" WAVE INDEX 01 00:00:00 TRACK 03 AUDIO TITLE "Floogie Walk" PERFORMER "Cab Calloway" REM COMPOSER "" INDEX 00 02:32:12 FILE "03 - Floogie Walk.wav" WAVE INDEX 01 00:00:00 TRACK 04 AUDIO TITLE "Trylon Swing" PERFORMER "Cab Calloway" REM COMPOSER "" INDEX 00 02:18:47 FILE "04 - Trylon Swing.wav" WAVE INDEX 01 00:00:00 TRACK 05 AUDIO TITLE "Utt-Da-Zay" PERFORMER "Cab Calloway" REM COMPOSER "" INDEX 00 02:47:17 FILE "05 - Utt-Da-Zay.wav" WAVE INDEX 01 00:00:00 TRACK 06 AUDIO TITLE "Crescendo In Drums" PERFORMER "Cab Calloway" REM COMPOSER "" INDEX 00 02:55:07 FILE "06 - Crescendo In Drums.wav" WAVE INDEX 01 00:00:00 FILE "07 - (Hep-Hep) The Jumpin' Jive.wav" WAVE TRACK 07 AUDIO TITLE "(Hep-Hep) The Jumpin' Jive" PERFORMER "Cab Calloway" REM COMPOSER "" INDEX 01 00:00:00 TRACK 08 AUDIO TITLE "Pluckin' The Bass" PERFORMER "Cab Calloway" REM COMPOSER "" INDEX 00 02:48:50 FILE "08 - Pluckin' The Bass.wav" WAVE INDEX 01 00:00:00 TRACK 09 AUDIO TITLE "Jiveformation Please" PERFORMER "Cab Calloway" REM COMPOSER "" INDEX 00 02:41:65 FILE "09 - Jiveformation Please.wav" WAVE INDEX 01 00:00:00 TRACK 10 AUDIO TITLE "A Bee Gezindt" PERFORMER "Cab Calloway" REM COMPOSER "" INDEX 00 02:29:60 FILE "10 - A Bee Gezindt.wav" WAVE INDEX 01 00:00:00 TRACK 11 AUDIO TITLE "Pickin' The Cabbage" PERFORMER "Cab Calloway" REM COMPOSER "" INDEX 00 02:51:57 FILE "11 - Pickin' The Cabbage.wav" WAVE INDEX 01 00:00:00 TRACK 12 AUDIO TITLE "Chop, Chop, Charlie Chan (From China)" PERFORMER "Cab Calloway" REM COMPOSER "" INDEX 00 02:48:40 FILE "12 - Chop, Chop, Charlie Chan (From China).wav" WAVE INDEX 01 00:00:00 TRACK 13 AUDIO TITLE "Lonesome Nights" PERFORMER "Cab Calloway" REM COMPOSER "" INDEX 00 03:00:72 FILE "13 - Lonesome Nights.wav" WAVE INDEX 01 00:00:00 FILE "14 - A Chicken Ain't Nothin' But A Bird.wav" WAVE TRACK 14 AUDIO TITLE "A Chicken Ain't Nothin' But A Bird" PERFORMER "Cab Calloway" REM COMPOSER "" INDEX 01 00:00:00 TRACK 15 AUDIO TITLE "The Workers' Train" PERFORMER "Cab Calloway" REM COMPOSER "" INDEX 00 02:52:18 FILE "15 - The Workers' Train.wav" WAVE INDEX 01 00:00:00 TRACK 16 AUDIO TITLE "Willow Weep For Me" PERFORMER "Cab Calloway" REM COMPOSER "" INDEX 00 03:15:04 FILE "16 - Willow Weep For Me.wav" WAVE INDEX 01 00:00:00 TRACK 17 AUDIO TITLE "Are You All Reet?"
