October 2020 REM GENRE "Afro-Cuban Jazz, Jazz-Funk" foobar2000 2.0 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 As can be expected from one-hit wonders, the brilliance of the hit track is unmatched by anything else on the album that bears its title, but that doesn't mean the album rots. _Funky Nassau_ is a pretty convincing nine-track funkfest delivered by three Bahamian brothers and their bassman---even if nothing else here apporaches the immortal groovelock of one of the smokingest singles ever to light up the Billboard charts.
The “miniskirts, maxiskirts, and Afro hairDO/people doin' their own thing, they don't care about me or YOU” declaration is delivered with such exuberance that it's never felt so flattering to be ignored by an entire populace, assuming the entire population of Nassau was as righteously styling as the haughty verse proclaims. Niggling a bit, I'd say the lyrics across the album are standard brotherly love, and the drop-off from the album opening “Funky Nassau” parts 1 and 2 to tracks 3-9 is pronounced enough that the album inevitably suffers under scrutiny. But there's a lot of skillful funk and stirring vocals everywhere, and some interestingly quirky instrumental touches here and there, so I won't be tossing the sensuously remastered immortal relic into the compost heap anytime soon. Word has it that when "Funky Nassau (part 1)" slashed the Nassau city airwaves upon its 1969 release, politicians pressured local radio stations not to run it, fearing the sizzle and sex implicit in the feverishly catchy tune and its suggestive title would give flesh-frying tourists and restless inhabitants the notion that the urbanity they were paid to suffocate was actually smoldering in soul, thus defying their post-colonial mandate. It went on to become far and away the most recognizable, culture-defining three minutes and twelve seconds of Bahamian song craft in history. Bass – Fred Henfield
