October 2020 REM DATE 2007 foobar2000 2.0 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 Yet another obscure late-period Ellington album, this misleadingly named (it was a studio album) release was one of a small group of instrumental jazz albums that my mother's venerable, profoundly deaf uncle owned, and which in due time found their way into the hands of an impressionable 19 year old me, who didn't know much about jazz besides that he liked Frank Zappa's fusion albums. Returning to this album years later, having absorbed a sizable chunk of postwar jazz, Ellington and otherwise, I have to say that its a thoroughly enjoyable listen- by no means my favorite album Ellington put out in the 60's, but certainly in my top 5, and there's no real reason that this should be as obscure as it is. The instrumentation is as fantastic as you'd imagine coming from this group, and the songs are mostly new material (in a decade where Duke took to repeating himself a loooooot). All in all a wonderful set of songs from an aging Ellington and his band, and one that is well deserving of your time once you've absorbed his major 1960s works.
